OVERVIEW

Straight ahead vintage tone in a small package with simple controls.

The CUB12R houses a 12" driver, giving it an increased volume and full rich valve tone. Looking at the preamp it's clear that the CUB12R packs more into the amp than it's smaller siblings. It features Gain, Treble, Middle, Bass, Volume, Tone and Reverb controls. The output section of the CUB12R is based around a pair of EL84 tubes giving it a more scooped tone than it's smaller counterparts. Think smooth rich overdrive with bags of gain.

The CUB12R features two input sockets one-labeled 15W the other labeled less than one watt. Plug into the "less than one watt" and you get your great tube tone at a whisper. The less-than-one-watt option allows you to drive the power amp section really hard allowing you to really access the "dark art" tone of power amp distortion.

The CUB12R is a member of the CUB range which offers everyone the opportunity to experience the sound and feel of a good quality tube amp at what is an amazing price.

I needed an amp for home use, I have very little space and I didn't want too many pedals all over the floor. The compact design of the CUB12R with built in reverb, gain, tone, eq and attenuation is perfect! I have owned other small (5watt and under) valve amps, but they just could not deliver the "warmth" you expect through their tiny 8" speakers. The CUB12R (15watts/12"speaker) however does it brilliantly, the 1watt channel is externally well geared to deliver gain at reasonable levels.
The amp is fine (great even) in small gig settings, but I imagine headroom would become an issue fairly easily as the amp is designed to break up.

I ordered this model on two occasions as a scratch & dent. Got a very good price. In both cases, the amp arrived in a shipping box but NO Laney box. Plugged it on, sounded great. Turned irt odd, came back to it later, it was stone cold dead. Wouldn't light up no latter what. Tried difference electrical outlets -- nothing.

Tone and reliability are the two most important qualities of an amp. The Laney totally failed the one. Twice.

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Have You Ever Been Experienced? This Amp has a nice "Hendrix," sound, A really nice gain with a warm feel to it. I can't say nothin' bad about it. And the price, the price,"Fogetaboutit," !!! Great for practice at low volume >1 watt. At 15 watts even Jimi would smile. Both humbuckers, and single coils , sound great . Nice for Heavy , Blues , Rock , and cleans up nicely ... Nice little Amp at any price ..................

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Warm sound, very usable tone shaping, and the "tone" knob is (I think) a very flexible power-amp presence control, which helps a lot. More than enough gain, breaks up nicely around 6 on the dial with my setup, but also more than enough clean headroom — this thing is pretty loud for 15W. The < 1W input is also surprisingly loud — I can annoy the rest of my household quite easily without turning the volume above 2. I doubt I could quite get away with playing a show on this amp, as my drummer is freakishly loud, but it's close, and I'm tempted.... Seems like a great value even at full price, and if you get lucky with a scratch & dent with no scratches and no dents, it's a crazy deal. 4 stars because 5 should be reserved for something really special — but I have no complaints at all. It's ugly but in kind of a cool way, and the reverb is fine, though I'm not much of a reverb guy anyway.

Its not a Marshall. But it has some nice features like easy access to the tubes for changing when they wear out. Warm tube sound. Great little practice home studio amp. Portable, not too heavy.

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Biggest plus is cost, especially SDOTD. Although voiced differently, competes with Blues Jr., Jet City, Black Cat Cougar 5, Blackstar H5, Bugera 22. Bested by Divided by 13, PRS Sweet 16, 3 Monkeys, and even Laney LC15. I have almost always have had good luck with Laney, even the lower-end lines, with respect to craftsmanship (even Chinese), reliabilty and bang-for-the-buck features.

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is top quality at a nice price. There simply is nothing but good to say about this amp. I had a friend try it out at a small gig himself who has been playing the northeast for 45 years and he loved it as well. It has great valve sound for Blues or Rock. It may not be the best for Metal.

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is a well designed small amp, perfect for home use (because of the 1 watt input) and good functionality with the effects loop. I run a Trio into the effects send, which allows me to control the volume of the bass and drums directly from the Trio, and the volume/gain of the guitar from the amp controls. I swapped the stock HH speaker with a 90's Celestion G12-100. The extra bottom of the 100 helps the bass/drums of the Trio, which remain dry no matter how high I turn up the gain of the guitar - and it's just a better sounding, meatier speaker. I toyed with swapping the tubes - but the Ruby tubes that come with are well regarded and in reading forums, changing the tubes yields only subtle differences (while swapping the speaker is similar to swapping pickups, a significant difference). Laney does temp you to make these changes. They designed the back for easy access - once the steel mesh back is removed, the speaker and tubes are easily accessible. Other than that, it's a pretty simple (MDF?) box with an ingenious handle material. The amp is not too big or heavy, so it's easily portable - the space-age rubber material they use for the handle effectively takes pounds off the overall weight (it seems) and makes it easier to carry. The amp sounds great, warm and percussive (I have it on an amp stand). Good natural drive and the reverb is pretty good too. For the price, I haven't found anything to complain about. It sounds equally good with my tele, strat, and les paul - though in unique ways. The strat, in particular, takes on a cool, compressed tone overall.

Comments about Laney CUB-12R 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I have always favored Fender amps -- never owned a high-gain amp -- so these are first impressions. I like the Laney a lot -- like the gain with its chime and rich harmonics -- like the <1 watt input for home use. Like how the settings can really shape the sound. Also like the light weight, so easy portability. Purchased this amp on a bit of an impulse -- but glad I did. So far, playing my Epi ES-339 pro through it -- but have a Casino and ES-339 P-90 pro standing in line behind. Also wondering how it will handle a strat!

I had a Laney Pro Tube 30 for several years, ending up giving it to my son. I have tried a couple of other amps since then, but nothing can match the sound of a Laney Tube amp.
