This pedal does have a wide variety of distortions available. However, there are several effects that sound very similar, and the ones which are good do not sound great at higher volumes in my experience.

Another inconvenient aspect of this pedal is that it requires a special power supply.

Personally I found that any Boss multi-effect unit will have similar options in terms of distortions. I recommend the Boss GT-100/GT-10.

      Good, but could be better

      By Ethan Carter

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

overall i really like the heavier distortions on this pedal particularly the "Line 6 Distortion" but the lighter distortions leave much to be desired
very wide selection of distortions, fuzzes and overdrives are given but the heavier stuff sounds much better than the softer stuff. Also many of the options that should be soft sound heavier than they should
well built, never had a problem
its a good pedal but i think they could give more for the money

      Greatest Pedal Ever

      By triple t

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

I have to cover a lot of sounds when I play live, but don't like huge multi-effects gadgets. This is it for me. It is true bypass, so I have my amp for clean sounds, and have 4 options for overdrive and distortion at the tap of a button. (I believe you can get 4 more with an expression pedal) It doesn't really have very many options for true distortion, (the proco rat is a winner, as others have mentioned) but it has several great overdrive tones. The fuzz tones are not for me. I can get rid of all of my other OD and distortion pedals, this blows them all away, and is very versatile, and simple to use.

      Pick and choose.

      By SG fan.

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

I received this pedal for free from someone I know who found it and doesn't play guitar. Not having a manual for it, it actually didn't take me too long to figure out how to use it. There are a number of factory presets on this pedal to choose from, but I don't really use any of them. The knobs allow one to adjust the sound of the presets without changing the stored presets themselves...and if you find a sound you like you can save it and up to three others in the user preset banks. I like pedals like this that let me turn knobs and adjust sounds on the fly, and with this it's easy to do. I'm not really into factory presets on stuff like this (these all sound too similar for me), so the fact that I can adjust the sound is nice. It seems to be built well, makes no noise through my amp and overall I have been pleased with it. If you prefer to have more than four of your own presets though, you'll want to look for something else.

      I need another one.

      By PNP

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

I've owned this for over 5 years. Each of the 4 footswitches have broken off and I've gotten them replaced. That alone reduced my ratings for this product. Otherwise, I have gotten nothing but compliments and 'gee-whiz' comments about my tone since I started using it. I have obsessively restored my 65 Bassman since then, and have been through dozens of pedals before finding this one. I love this pedal and need another one, because I don't think these things are built to last forever.

      Not for me...

      By punkclash05

      from Ford City, PA

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

I am a total tone freak and have to have the perfect tone or I won't be happy. This is a nice pedal, but it just isn't for me. All the tones on it (even the overdrives) just sounded too heavy and way to clustered. It just wasn't right for me at all. I am planning on trading it in and buying a Lovepedal Les Leis. It is cool that you can have 4 different tones on one pedal. So if you're into a heavier sound and not so picky I would recommend this pedal, but if you're like me don't get it.

Great multifunctional box for the money

      By Thor rough

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

This box does everything well. I have had this box for four years now and I own about 16-20 stompboxes and assortment of multifunctionals like the Boss and digitech bass and guitar modulators, but this is the box I use. it has good tone for the reasonable ear, it is sturdy and it is portable and that is why I think we buy this multiple tone shifting distortion gadgets

      Simplicity in Complexity

      By RG350DXBK

      from Nebraska

Comments about Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler Pedal:

Off the bat I just want to say I purchased this pedal on consignment in a local store for $100.00 in flawless condition w/box and all. I am writing in reference of it's value based on it's list price though. This pedal is complex looking, but very easy to sit and tinker with. You can program 4 stompable effects to switch between alongside of that you can still fine-tune (edit) them on stage with the turn of a dial without permanently changing your pre-set. This is a very sturdy and attractive pedal. It takes you from early metal (heavy) Rat sounds, to heavy metal destruction. It also fine tunes a solid sounding vintage amplifier with bright overdrive to an almost acoustic sounding reverb effect on a light overdrive. This pedal can make Strats sound like Pantera, and Warlocks sound like BB King. It's tunable and easy if you invest your time into a little tinkering... or throw your money away on 16 stompboxes, a few noisegates, some EQ pedals, and 30 guitars that adds nothing but extra hum and loss of tone for each additional pedal and circuit stopper out there. Don't be an idiot when buying at all, and this is no mistake to own right here!
