Tone-bending filters and classic synth effects — all in one box!

The Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler Pedal is a studio-quality, professional effects pedal with 16 models of vintage and monophonic synth effects.

The Mu-tron® Bi-Phase; the Korg® X911 Guitar Synth—are these rebel fighter ships from The Empire Strikes Back? Or maybe proton thrusters from outtakes of Babylon 5? Nope. These, and the other 13 techy tone temptations loaded into Line 6’s galactic-purple FM4 Filter Modeler stompbox, represent the outer limits of guitar filter effects, a territory many consider to be today’s most fertile terrain for discovering new sounds, timbres and tone colors.

In looking forward, Line 6 first looked back to the filters, vocoders, and guitar synths that players from Frank Zappa and Ernie Isley to Robert Fripp and Peter Frampton have made synonymous with creative guitar playing. “The Throbber” will have your tone gurgling with synth-approved LFO from four wave shapes, including square or triangle waves; “Tron Up/Tron Down” literally drips with auto-wah style response in either Low-, Band- or High-Pass varieties; “Synth-O-Matic” simulates the notably nasty filter sections and wave shapes of prized vintage synths from the Prophet® 600 to the legendary Arp Explorer.

Of course, you already use a filter effect all the time; every Wah-Wah pedal is a variable filter, and the FM4 includes a superb “Q Filter” that allows you find and fix that golden frequency notch, in the same spirit as “parked wah” practitioners like Queen’s Brian May and soul superstar Prince. Want to make it a more traditional wah? Just hook up the optional EX-1 expression pedal, and save a “Q Filter” sound to both a low frequency (heel down on the EX-1) and a high frequency (toe down on the EX-1) and you’ve got a more versatile wah than any off-the-shelf pedal, not to mention a pristine 24-bit signal path, stereo ins and outs, and true bypass switching.

Like all Line 6 stompbox Modelers, the FM4 boasts a simple and sturdy front panel design, with four footswitches for saving and recalling your sounds, and six knobs for selecting models and tweaking parameters, with distinct assignments for each knob depending on the model you’ve chosen. The Line 6 FM4 is for the true explorer of new sonic galaxies; expect to be surprised, stimulated and encouraged to absolute synth-fulness.

Traditionalists beware. This pedal is for noisemakers and experimentalists, or those who want something completely different. The array of noises and sounds this little box can produce will blow your mind!! From the throaty "growler" setting to the repetitive madness of 'comet trails' this thing is insane. When used in conjunction with Line 6's DL4 delay modeler, worlds of possibilities are opened up as far as sheer noisemaking and effects. This sounds best on guitar with single note lines, little melodies or with a muted pick attack. It's digital tracking gets a little sloppy when you try to do too much or play complicated chords. Line 6 admits to this in the manual. The build seems solid enough, though many complain about Line 6's construction quality, I have never had a problem with their gear because I take good care of my stuff and it only leaves my house when it goes to my friend's home studio. We've had tons of fun getting crazy sounds out of the FM4 and digitally sampling them or looping them for use in electro/noisy beat heavy music. Fans and players of reggae and dub music would really like this box when used with the mighty DL4 delay modeler I'm sure! This stompbox is awesome on it's own, but if you can afford it and you want a terrible psychedelic noise machine, you must combine it with that DL4 delay modeler. The possibilities are endless. I am also able to produce more wacky sounds by placing a phaser pedal or flanger before the FM4. This box is not for everyone, not even for most. Many will hate its purple color and obnoxious output. For specialized genres like funk, and more non-specific arts like "experimental" music, this thing shines! I have yet to try Line 6's effects through a big rig like a 4x12 cab and a nice head. The FM4 has so far been used with headphones and smaller practice amps to great effect. I find that regardless of what guitar or bass I use, the preset sounds are consistent and the output of the box is always similar, and each instruments' characteristics still shine through. Example, when using the FM4 my Les Paul still sounds like itself and my cheap P-bass still sounds like its cranky self. I play heavy handed hardcore, agressive pop inspired punk, and experimental electronic stuff. The FM4 goes against every musical instinct in my body but it is so much fun to just mess around with! The price is a bit high considering this line of stompboxes has been around for a long time. I got my Delay modeler for about half retail, from a friend used, but paid the full average retail for the FM4, which again, is a bit high. All told though, if you are an open minded musical traveler with some cash in your pocket and you want something that is unlike anything else, you'd do well to buy the FM4 filter modeler. I am especially impressed by the number of preset sounds in this box. Realistically, if you were able to find and buy all of the original effects that this emulates, you'd be spending months of your time and tens of thousands of dollars. In that regard, it's actually a pretty good deal. I have never heard a lot of the rare effects that these sounds are based off of, but I think it emulates all of them fairly accurately without sounding overly robotic or too digital. Overall, I would recommend this piece of equipment without hesitation.

This box is for those who want to explore the world of analog synth filtration without spending a fortune to acquire all the boxes this one models. Works reasonably well on guitar, great for bass guitar and keybs.

        funk machine deluxe

Comments about Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have had this thing for over a year now, and I am still amazed by it. I use it with my Fender J-Bass, a pretty decent list of other gadgets, my tube preamp and my Eden Nemesis combo. It will get pretty crazy in a hurry...and that's why I love it. It's not really a practical pedal, especially for the bass, but sometimes you just need something to get you out of your box, and this box does it. I play with a band that leads worship, and I jam with some guys from a more bluesy/jazzy direction. I really enjoy using this when I am in a spaced out mood, really psychadellic stuff. Anyway, not practical for me, but still worth the money.

Comments about Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler Guitar Effects Pedal:

After spending a few hours tweaking this thing, I found myself in a love-hate relationship with it. I love all the crazy sounds you can create with this thing (ESPECIALLY with a good delay pedal, too!!) and I love the tweakability of all the presets versus their real-life counterparts. What I don't love is that NONE of the presets are consistent in how they affect your sound, also, no matter what setting you're using, stay away from the 12th fret on the G-string... Any time you hit that note, no matter what setting you're using, the note screeches up into the stratosphere as if it was running thru a Digitech Whammy. Overall, fun stuff, but I'm returning this and am gonna get maybe one or two of the actual units/effects they were trying to recreate...

This stomp box has some really trippy sounds to it. Making a little noise now and then doesn't hurt, especially if you are the only guitar in the band. Its pretty self explanatory once you first get it. Make some presets to it and you'll be David Gilmour in no time.

Comments about Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is pretty crazy, ive owned for over a month now and its pretty sweet. Although it does have its quirks and problems (as does any effect) its overall as great pedal. I bought it because i wanted synth sounds and it definetly delivers theres tons of different sounds in each setting. My only gripe is on some settings you can only play single note lines and chords are completely out of the question. On several of the other settings hammer on pull offs and bends dont register but thats only on one or two settings. Im very happy with it and think its a good buy and would recomend it to any one who has the time to fiddle with it and get to know its abilities and inabilities

Comments about Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler Guitar Effects Pedal:

Years ago, I wanted a Korg 911 synth, but it was quite expensive. This unit contain a very good model of that product and models of varies other amusing, but not perfect old school products. It is not intended to sound "modern" and do the things today's products can. For the same money, you can a pretty good keyboard synth if that is your goal.

This pedal actually sounds really cool when playing bass through it. Especially the 'synth-o-matic' setting. If you've heard of bands like Some Girls, or the Locust, that effect will definitely ring a bell. Overall it's a fun pedal with a bunch of sound possibilities. I love it.
