Mad Professor

A brand new pedal that combines great distortion and reverb for that sought-after sound.

The new “1” pedal from Mad Professor combines distortion and reverb to provide the sought-after "brown sound" of the late '70s and early '80s. With intense drive, high definition and a built-in reverb to add ambience and depth, this truly is the one to deliver one of the most legendary guitar tones to ever come out of an amplifier. Controls for Reverb, Brown, Level and Presence let you shape the 1’s sound to fit your style perfectly.

“1”’s gain ranges from medium to very heavy distortion. The amount can be easily controlled via the volume control of your guitar (input impedance is set to facilitate this, and is somewhat negated if a buffer or buffered effect is used ahead of “1”). The Brown knob controls the amount and harmonic overtones of the distortion. Getting the exact tonal quality is the key to this legendary sound and “1”’s Brown and Presence controls help it appropriately interface with a wide variety of pickups and amplifiers. “1” has a build in Reverb circuit with a Level control for setting the ambience. The sound is modeled after the studio reverb found on classic recordings from the 70’s. The decay time is preset so as not to mess the rhythm of your playing. The preset decay time and tone can be modified with trimmers inside the pedal.

The controls are:
· VOLUME: Sets the output level of pedal.
· BROWN:: Controls the distortion and the sizzling highs.
· PRESENCE: Adjusts frequencies similar to the Presence control on an amplifier.
· REVERB: Sets the “wet” level of the Reverb
Internal trimmers:
· REVERB DECAY: Adjusts the length of the Reverb decay time.
· REVERB TONE: Brightens or darkens the Reverb decay.

I watched the demo video and thought I would buy it due to the return policy of MF. It won't be returned. This thing has amazing reverb. The presence and brown controls work very well together. Awesome sound. plenty of volume boost, too. This is the best ever distortion pedal I have owned during 30 years of playing. The price is what it is and worth it to me. I don't like distortion pedals but I love this one. I play through a Marshall 410H. I have plenty sound selections and this pedal adds to my choices for tone duplication. Great item earns top rank.

After seeing the reviews on YouTube, I bought this pedal the next day...and then returned it within an hour.

The Good: The reverb on this is wonderful and perfectly balanced. It also produced the strong mids for which EVH is known.

The Bad: The pedal had an oscillating compression effect (like a phaser, sort of), which I didn't want, and which I could not eliminate or control. I don't know if the phaser effect was built in to replicate Eddie's use of the MXR 90, or if it was some strange anomaly unique to being paired with my amp. The thing is, I used it with a clean-sounding amp. And this amp is touted as working best with a clean-sounding amp, so I would have though my amp would be a perfect match. Whether the phasing/compression effect was intentional or not, I hated it. Had I been able to get rid of that effect, I would have kept the pedal. My advice would be to test this with your equipment before buying.

Comments about Mad Professor 1 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have used several distoriton pedals in the past few months and I have returned all of them. So far, my rig has had an ocd and several mxr distortions but none have met the standards. This pedal is amazing. bottom line. if you want a strong distortion that doesn't sound muddy and gives every note weight, then this is the pedal for you. Some people don't like the phaser side of it, but it turns off when you roll the brown back. So far, this is the best purchase I've made and it works really well through my fender blues deluxe reissue.

Comments about Mad Professor 1 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I just got the ONE from a local GC. I got it home and hooked it up and immediately noticed a ton of white noise? I could make out a subtle Phase90 tone mixed in when I increase the brown knob but it was hard to hear over the unwanted white noise. The reverb is kind of over kill compared to my TC Electronics Hall of Fame.

I'm not giving up on this pedal quite yet and will be back at it again checking all my connections to make sure it isn't something I did wrong but I am not an armature and use all high quality gear...I hope it's not a defective pedal.

My amp is only a few month old, New Bugera 1960 Infinium model with NEW J/J tubes...Sitting on top of original 1970's full stack two 4x12 JMP 100 watt cabs with their original 70's greenbacks. My guitar is a 2011 reissue Melody Maker, cables are Mugami and Hosa Pro. AC power supply is One spot.

Before buying the Mad Professor 1 pedal I was using 3 separate pedals combined to get the Brown sound and I never had any white noise issues at all. The trade off of using just one pedal to get Eddy's tone isn't worth it if the pedal has this much unwanted white noise.
I may or might not ask for an exchange if by chance I am unable to get rid of the white noise.

When I bought the pedal NEW the guy at GC said he had to go in the back and grab s new one. He didn't sell me the pedal I seen in the display case. I noticed after getting it home an unboxing it someone stuck a price tag sticker from GC on the bottom indicating the price. This wasn't the actual price I paid for it and I found it odd it even had a price tag sticker stuck to the bottom of it if it's suppose to be NEW out of the box.

I've purchased used pedal from GC and they always stick a price tag sticker on the bottom when they get put into a display case. sold as used!

My purchase may have been a return pedal that sat in the display case then put in the back now I ended up with it.

The pedal sounds great on YouTube, the reason I bought it but it's absolutely horrible because of the white noise.
Since taking it home and trying it out with my gear I am not liking it at all.
I have 30 days to decide what to do with it, it may just go back to where it came from a lot sooner.

Why not come right out and say? Oh wait, copyright and lawsuits. Yes, they are trying to sell you the Van Halen tone you will never have, hence the "Brown" and demo that comes oh-so-close to sounding like Van Halen songs. Eddie never used a distortion pedal; his distortion, and reverb, for that matter, all came from his Marshall amp. You won't sound like Eddie with this pedal, you will sound like yourself. Best advice, and Eddie concurs (from interviews I have read) is to stop trying to copy others and get your own sound. Why be a copy-cat when you can be an original? If you are trying to execute Van Halen songs like Eddie, it won't work, if you do it in your own style, it WILL work. 35 year VH fan and 25 year guitar player speaking here.

This is an awesome pedal! I am currently using it on my Mesa Boogie and am floored by how strong it is. I own or used to own a ts9 ibanez and this amp simply destroys it. Its worth the $$$

Comments about Mad Professor 1 Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had enough time with this pedal to use is with a variety of amps and can honestly say that it's personality remains constant for the most part.As with any good overdrive/distortion pedal it is responsive to minor changes in EQ and volume. With a clean amp it can produce a subtle throaty grind that is great for country as well as rock.In front of a high gain amp it adds that little "extra" push without a lot of noise. The reverb is fairly organic, however it can sound a bit harsh and boxy depending on the amp and settings. All in all it seems well built and will likely find its way into my recordings.

this pedal is everything u ever wanted when u see the mad pro demo, but when u really hear it,its a different story, the gain is what you get out of the box,the gain knob is un responsive, its all or nothing, and the pedal makes a weird hum, even when the knobs are toned down, the Mxr 78 distortion,or any green Screamer,Id prefer over this, its way over priced,to be let down in the end, returned it,bought an mxr at a flea mkt,was much happier!

I saw the video and thought this was just right for some of the Classic Rock tunes I play.
I use it on the clean channel of my Marshall DSL 40. It is just the right flavor. Colorfull overtones and wicked harmonics. I added it to my rig along with my TS808 Tube Screamer this thing just sings.

I came across the online demo and decided to purchase it. The pedal just plain rocks. Has enough range that just little tweaks make a big difference. I am running this thru a Vox AC15 thru the clean channel and it sounds awesome. This pedal can make any amp shine. It's a worthy investment for anyone looking to add some nice crunchy tone.
