Not to long ago, I came to the stage where I needed to upgrade my pedal arsenal to a more professional sound. I wanted a creamy sounding, gain filled, durable, easy to use pedal and that basically describes everything that the Golden Cello is. From the moment I got this pedal I've loved everything about it! The overdrive tone it gives is just perfect at any gain level and it seems that you can't find a useless sound in this pedal no matter how you dial it in! The delay is sweet and simple, which is everything it's supposed to be for this pedal. Now, note that the delay in this pedal, in all it's simplicity, is no replacement for your multi-featured tap-tempo delay pedal, it's merely a fun extra that can give you a cool atmosphere to your sound when you want it, and for that, it is a wonderful sounding delay!
The best thing about the Golden Cello is that the sound it puts out is EXTREMELY influental on whatever amp you put the pedal through, which is good because it means that while you'll still get the influence of your amp into the mix, you wont be getting a wonderful sound with one amp and then a terrible sound with another (you'll always get a good sound!), infact, I played this pedal through an awful solid-state halfstack at a band practice and everybody there was blown away by how good the pedal sounded and how well it cut through. In the same way, the pedal reacts wonderfully with other OD's and distortions (I use it with a Ibanez Tube King OD and it sustains for years and gives harmonics at a touch!). Overall, I think I would reccomend this pedal to anyone looking for a botique overdrive, regardless of how long they've been playing. If you're looking for that thick, creamy, singing overdrive tone that will set your guitar tone apart from the others, I'd highly reccomend this pedal!

I really wanted to like this pedal but ultimatly was disappointed. Great idea but just doesn't work for me. The distortion sounds good, but not great; a little slow on the the attack and not alot of tonal variations. In other words I couldn't tweak the tone to the spot I really wanted it to be in. But it was mostly the delay that lost me. The dealy just doesn't sound very good and for a live performance it requires to much hands on tweaking. Overall good idea but I need better control for both dealy and overdrive settings that can't be had in this all in one.

About Me Professional Musician

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

So, I needed another OD pedal like I needed a hole in my head. I own too many to count, have about 4 that I consided must haves for my setup. When I saw the Golden Cello in latest Musicians Friend flyer it was "here we go again." The concept looked cool, why not have an OD pedal with built in delay! I for one tend to use 400-600ms delay on a lot of solos, clean or overfriven. Slapback delay is essential for roots, bluesier stuff too though that's not what this pedal does. The obvious reference of the Golden Cello to the much sought after EJ tone is a no brainer, but it does more than that. I took the bait and ordered it. My first impression on plugging it in was WOW!With the drive set 1/4 to halfway you get thick sustaing OD without losing note clarity. I had the tone set just below 12:00 which was perfect for my amp (Boogie MKII) and guitar (335.)Turning the drive knob past mid-point increases the sustain and adds some brightness. It never got overly fizzy sounding, more like high gain amp/pre amp type OD with a hint of vintage fuzz. The tone knob adds high end, didn't need any more than where I set it. Now for the delay, the ad describes it as "tape delay" which I think is a digitaly mocked version of this. For what it does I am very satisfied with the delay sound and tone. There's one knob for delay which controls level or intensity, with the knob off you still can hear delay sound very faintly. The manual dosen't tell you the length of this pre-set dealy time but I read in a post somewhere that it's about 380-400ms. There are internal trim pots for increasing delay (2 for this, manual says they must be "in balance" to work correctly but no recommended settings or explanation.) Anyway, I'm quite satisfied with the manufacturers setting. I took the pedal, amp, and my guitar to a jam last night and it was incredible for soloing. On bluesier stuff I turned the drive knob lower or just rolled down my guitar volume knob (cleans up nicely.) If you wanna rock out just crank the drive, there's plenty of volume to spare, never had to run it over 1/2. Mad Professor certainly got it right with the Golden Cello, does it make you sound exactly like EJ, nope. Won't give you his chops either but if you dig high gain OD with luxury of built in useable delay it's a winner! For what it's worth, this pedal sounds very similar to the drive channel in a well known boutique amp I used to own. The amp is also known for it's close approximation to a highly sought after OD sound built by a special designer. Scary to think the technology is getting so good that a reputable pedal maker can put this quality of sound in a [$] price point device with compact size!

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I wanted instant lead tone for live performance. Now I have it with one "stomp". It simplifies the process of adding spontaneous licks and fills, allowing me to express my thoughts without having to think about anything else. I just set it and forget it.

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is Eric Johnson's tone in a box! I couldn't believe how good the tone sounded and how little "noise" there was associated with it. It's a professional piece of equipment. This Pedal will be THE New "Classic" pedal to own. While others have said they couldnt, I am able to get delay or the distortion sound seperately, but they sound the best when used together! Great for Rock or Blues. This pedal will inpire you!

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This unit sounds pretty amazing with use of a good Fender clean and a Celestion H30 modified cabinet. It sounds super with a Strat, or a PRS. So far I'm very impressed with the range of it's capabilities as well as it's build quality. I would consider the distortion similar, but a bit harder/grittier than a Tube Screamer. So, add a really, really good delay and you have a great package. I really enjoy playing the blues and soloing and have found several sweet spots in this pedal. Once you configure your amp/guitar settings, you too will dial in your sweet spots too! I also love how responsive this pedal is (it reacts to your pick attack and you can lighten your power to clean things up). The Golden Cello will be a classic and for the money it's worth the tone. Try all the settings dialed at 12 O'clock and you'll be real pleased there, but there are many others. If you love the Bonnamassa tone, look no further.

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Went and ordered this at my local GC after testing it around for an hour or so. It was on a great sale, conveniently enough, though I definitely still would've bought it even without the sale. Like the name and brand suggests, this pedal has a golden tone to it, a loud and proud orchestral sound, and if you're a "mad professor" who needs all sorts of different sounds, this has a massive amount of variety variety to it. Really versatile pedal, and it has features that would take multiple pedals (and around 300-400 dollars) to get otherwise. If you don't add this to your pedalboard, you better already have all its effects, otherwise you've missed getting 3-4 pedals in one.

Great tone, sweet singing sustain. I've been looking for this sound for a long time. I have read other reviews saying that it's not good with other pedals when stacking other distortions with this one, I dissagree. Cut the gain and the echo back and it will enhance the other distortions. I would not sell or trade mine for anything. It's a keeper.

Loved how this baby sounded on its own. When it came to gigging live? Very sorry that it simply did not cut the mustard. Not only was it unable to cut through a loud mix, it didn't hold its own in a softer mix. Was lost the second you clicked it in. Of course, using it in a recording one would be able to isolate the pedals sound enough so that it would most likely work out well. Truly very expensive to purchase just for recording IMHO. Thank goodness the return policy makes it a smooth transition to bring one back.

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm a Fender guy. I play several strat's though a Don Jones 410 Bassman clone (amazing amp builder). I mostly play blues and my Tim and Lovepedal array works great for that. The band I'm playing with now does a few tunes that are a little heavier....ala Govt Mule. I was looking for a pedal to thicken up the single coils and give me a nice creamy drive...and this pedal hit it on the head. I'm not sure what to call this pedal...not really an overdrive, somewhat of a distortion...bit of a fuzz? Has elements of them all really. The build in delay is nice, but I'd have bought this pedal with or without it. Anyway, the strat's I play have an assortment of pickups....Fralin, Fender 54's, 69's, etc...and this pedal meshes really well with all of them. What REALLY impressed me was how well it handles both rhythm and lead. Roll the volume on the guitar back a bit and you can get some really nice, crunchy rhythm tones. Turn it back up and let the smooth, creamy harmonic complexity shine

I tried to really give this a shot. The advertising & description sounded like it was something I always wanted, the 2 main effects I use in one small package. I've got my clean amp tone I like, & then kick in this for a solo. Unfortunately the sound quality of the overdrive isn't what I thought it should be. I tried to get a really good tone with this thing & just was not pleased. With the advertising on this thing Mad Professor has set some high expectations & I imagine quite a few users will be returning this item as I am.

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love the tone and delay....HOWEVER....this is a pedal that must suck the juice out of a battery really quickly, as it loses volume after a few minutes of playing. I tried it with an external 9 volt power source and that seems to help. They ought to sell it with dedicated power supply and own up to the fact that this would be necessary for a whole evenings gig. Otherwise, the tone and usefulness of the controls, as well as the beautiful and variable delay effect are outstanding.
So, with the above caveats, I would recommend this pedal as long as you know what you are getting into.

I am always chasing the best tone for my dist/overdrive sound. The problem that I always seem to find in most pedals is that they break up unless the gain is really pulled back. I have been through them all. This pedal makes my Britsh Laney Amp SING!!!!
I gig 3-4 times a month in a variety band that plays rock/country/r&b and I put them to the test on the road.
If you are looking for smooth clean sustaining overdrive that will get the job done, then this is the one for you....oh and did I mention that the delay is just the icing on the pedal?
I have now become a Mad Professor Fan.

Comments about Mad Professor Golden Cello Combined Delay and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Sole, albeit minor, con was it doesn't seem to have any other control for delay other than intensity. Otherwise, I will not repeat what others have technically noted nor state any other adjective other than INSPIRING! It WILL sweep you into your inner muse and have you play longer than you intended. Beware the possibly angry significant other...

I cant believe how good this pedal integrates its features, namely that creamy Distortion/Fuzz with the two stage delay. I am running thru a Two rock amp and I am hearing some of those EJ tones and dynamics, only wish I could play better so I could enjoy more of those tones.Cant believe a pedal of this quality and sound has such a low MSRP ([$]) Well done MAd Professor

Has a great vintage sound. Nice warm tube vibe, can be very heavy or "saturated" if needed. Built in delay gives a nice trippy sound for the right moments. I would suggest this pedal for a nice lead. I love it.

I'm not that much into effects pedals, but I was looking for one that would give me that creamy blues-type tone I was getting from my tube amp but did not translate well into my digital multi-track recorder. This fits the bill. Control over delay and tone is great and it sounds fantastic. I wish I could tone down the drive a bit more without losing volume and tone. Having to tweek all the knobs on the pedal and the amp when toning down the drive knob is my only complaint, but generally, it's perfect for what I use it for.

REVIEW FROM AN EXPERIENCED USER OF THIS PEDAL FOR BLUES AND ROCK TUNES. BRILLIANT SOUND PRODUCER WITH A BLUES HARMONICA. TRIED THIS AT A GUITAR STORE AND TOOK IT RIGHT AWAY TO MY HOME STUDIO. PLAYED TUNES FROM KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD, JOE BONNAMOSSA, MUDDY WATERS, SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON WITH MY BLUES HARMONICAS THROUGH THIS PEDAL AND SOME OTHER BLUES AND ROCK STUFF. PLAYED MY OWN TUNES TOO. THOUGH IN DRIVE 12 O'CLOCK POSITION, YOU CAN HEAR EVERY SINGLE NOTE (VOLUME 12 O'CLOCK). I USE MY OWN DELAY PEDAL (BOSS DD-20) INSTEAD OF THE BUILT IN DELAY FUNCTION. SOUNDS CLEARER, MORE CRISPY. CONNECTED IT WITH MY FENDER EXCELSIOR, AND SEEMS TO ME BEING THE PERFECT PEDAL/AMP SETUP.
