Comments about Markbass Bass Multiamp S Stereo 600W Bass Head with Effects:

OK, I've been spoiled - been a user of Fractal's Axe-Fx units for guitar for years, which is the Cadillac of digital modellers, but has limitied support for bass amps. So I thought I'd check this head out.

The upside: great, transparent MarkBass sound, and very good modelling of some other classic bass amps; effects seem high quality.

The downsides: 1. limited cab options; 2. Screen interface is clunky, and reviewing/editing/creating patches is tedious and relatively unintuitive.

Basically, digital amp/effect modellers need PC connectivity and PC editors to be useable, IMO. The Multiamp has neither. And you need a MIDI foot controller to use these things, which MB now makes (more $$) but which does not appear to be terribly easy to program and use (just on superficial observation, don't have one). In contrast, the Axe-Fx has a tightly integrated foot controller, software programable, LED indicators for effects on/off, etc. I guess if you only need a few patches tweaked and saved (and never changed) it might not be too bad, but otherwise you'll spend a lot of time setting this up and getting it to work smoothly with a pedal.

I guess my other issue with this head is philosophical: do most bass players really need this many effects? Unlike guitar, bass effects tend to be fairly plain-Jane (compression, maybe octavizer, phaser, chorus), so you're spending a fair chunk of change on a bunch of effects most gigging bassists will never use, it seems. And you still have to buy a cab for it (lots more $$) unless it's for home studio/recording use -- which may be its best application
