OVERVIEW

Excellent sound controls, quality speakers, and a solid design.

The Markbass CMD 102P is a tilt-back bass combo amplifier that has a built-in Little Mark II solid state preamp to give you more power. To help shape your sound, the CMD 102P bass amp gives you a 4-band EQ, as well as VLE (Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator) and VPF (Variable Pre-shape Filter) filters for control.

The Markbass CMD 102P amp's I/O includes an input that can handle both passive and active basses, and extra XLR balanced input for double bass pickups, Neutrik Speakon Combo out jacks for use with 1/4" or Speakon speaker cables, a tuner out jack for sending unbalanced signals to a tuner, amp, or other recording equipment, and Send and Return Effect jacks to ensure your main signal continues even if something dies in your effects chain. This versatile bass combo has an angled cabinet so that you can use it as a floor model or in the more traditional vertical position. Either way, you're going to get a warm, natural sound from the 2 B&C 10" speakers and the piezo tweeter. And if you add an external cab via the outputs, the CMD 102P combo amp will give you enough sound to fill a large venue with headroom to spare.

Over all I would say that this amp is a worth wild purchase and is a perfect first buy for any one thinking about Markbass, or looking for a combo amp (that they can easily turn into their full stage rig buy simply buying a 4x10 cab)The price point being set slightly higher then normal is not really a deterrent as it is exceptionally built amp that has embraced the idea of infinite convertibility
I have written many reviews and used even more amps... Some good, some great, some were the worst things I ever played.
That being said after all the amps I have ever played; This is the amp or should I more properly say, combo amp that I have been most impressed with and most pleasurable to play.
All touring amps (and equipment for that matter) must be able to pass the three following check points.
Tone
Dependably
Portability
It has to sound good, not break, and be able to be transported.
This amp far exceeds the standards for all three.
Having a sound and over all tone that is second to none. Clear and crisp with more punch then anything I have ever played, with plenty of low end that you may not need any pre amp re-enforcement.It seems to be a very dependable tool, (having not failed in any way over the last years shows) I did to protect my investment by purchasing the padded cases offered from Markbass. They fit well and work as the Markbass company says they should.
At a weight under what most heads weigh, (to say nothing of the speakers) it is light and very easy to move. Having not being built on a bulky or awkward size one can easily lift the amp with one hand and two handed caring when on the stairs of a poorly thought out club lay out are a breeze to navigate. Portability is beyond important and most often overlooked when it comes to picking a decent amp. All the great sound in the world won't matter at all if you can not bring it to bare on the stage.
The Italian people often known for fine workmanship on all things have now proven that amp building is well with in their grasp.
The amp is sleek looking box that gives equal nods to efficiency and style. I happen to enjoy it's "Attack of the Killer Bee's" look that the color scheme suggest, but it offers a rather practical use in that it is far easier to read in low light the bold black letters on a yellow face then almost anything else I have ever encountered. The easy of use of the front panel of an amp is always paramount in its construction, and this amp does not let you down there.
A fairly straight forward lay out for controls having only two knobs that you may wish to read up on to fully understand what they do, but if you have a decent ear you should not have any trouble determining their values and extreme usefulness without much if any explanation.
The two onboard speakers are able to give a solid clear sound with out fear of over driving in the unpleasant way. In small clubs practice spaces the speakers have great tonal aspects to them rivaling or exceeding that of any of its competitors. The tilt back feature is excellent allowing the amp to serve as monitor and backline. In places where you will be using the far better then average line out feature the amp pairs with an expansion 4x10 cab most smartly. The resulting 6x10 cab will easily rival or exceed any of the leading brand name 8x10. To date I know of nothing that sounds as good and is lighter then this combo with an expansion cabinet.
The amp is a bit on the pricey side with used models selling from 900 to 1000. I would have to say that this speaks more to a sign of how well the amp performs and is constructed then a show of greed from Markbass. It could easily be the last combo amp you ever need buy and as the repairs are few and far between spending a bit more for quality is far better then the disappointment often had by purchasing something cheeper.
Some might remark that the amp lacks some of the features found on some lower price point amps built in compressors, over drive, sub octaves and the like and kind. It has been my experience that every built into the amp compressor on the market is less then impressive. The same can be said for over drive units, and all manner of built in effects. I am truly glad that Markbass left out these useless items that are what many amp companies call features.

I owned this great amp for about 1-2 years and it never failed me. HOWEVER, I could just never get a tone out of it that I truly enjoyed. I tried a bunch of different basses, etc, but I feel as if the sound still falls flat and generally is boring. YES, the vintage speaker emulators are amazing, but unless you really like that bass-heavy ultra smooth sounding R&B type tone, this is not your amp. I figured out I'm more of an ampeg, grittier tone kind of guy, and unfortunately this amp has ZERO grit. It is clean for days. Nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea. I also found the amp to not take pedals too well (even for having an FX Loop) and it just didn't come off as a super loud stage ready amp to me. Bottom line, buy this if you love rich, warm, smooth sounding bass with no grit and raunchy aspects. IF you need that ampeg growl every now and then...move on from anything markbass.

Comments about Markbass CMD 102P 300/500W 2x10 Tilt-Back Bass Combo Amp:

I bought this primarily because I was looking for a combo with enough power to hang with loud rock and roll drummers while not breaking my back hauling gear around from place to place. This has fit that bill perfectly. Its weight and dimensions are such that I can carry my bass case with one hand and this amp with another. Game-changer right there. This little combo puts out ample power to handle any practice situation I've encountered and I've not yet had to turn the master up above the 9 o'clock position during practices. I haven't tried it with an extension cab yet, but all indications are that it would push plenty of power to handle most small/medium sized clubs without PA support. The tip-back design is great for monitoring. The biggest surprise for me, though, was the tone. I had heard great things about Markbass and bought this off MF without first trying it out, knowing I was taking a chance. I wasn't disappointed. I had just about given up on my '73 Rick because I couldn't get the tone I was looking for out of it with my other rigs (Ashdown, Peavey). Finally I have the tone I've been looking for and the Rick is now my go-to bass. I wasn't blow away initially with the tone as the amp sounds very clean and uncolored compared to some other brands, lacking of tube warmth and fatness. After some trail and error, though, I found the secret sauce is in the VLE and VPF filters, everything else I'm able to leave almost flat after tweaking those two knobs to where I like 'em and the richness and grit of the instrument's tone compliments the clean and full output of the amp. I haven't had the amp long enough to vouch for its longevity, but the build seems very solid and Markbass has a great reputation for quality.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a lightweight but powerful combo with extension capabilities and a simple EQ setup, you're going to have a hard time beating this amp.

Comments about Markbass CMD 102P 300/500W 2x10 Tilt-Back Bass Combo Amp:

I have tried out quite a few combo amps, For example; Fender Rumbles, Ampeg B Series, or even Acoustic B Series. Out of all the combo amps, none compares to this, except maybe some Orange Combo's. But I love how you can use it as a monitor or an amp. I love how powerful it is and just the amazing sound quality just coming out of 2x12's. Also it is very portable, this is my practice amp because I can just take it anywhere, great for jamming. The only thing I think could make it better is if it had a tube in it :). Amazing amp though, definitely recommend ANY Markbass products, best company for bass amps in my opinion :).

Nice rig! This this is super light weight, I love it! Sound is really good and quite powerful for a 2x10 combo. I've noticed a bit of speaker distortion if I turn it up a bit. I have not used this live yet so I'm hoping it will be able to be loud enough without distorting.

Having played many gigs, I found most other bass amps lacking in one area or another. Having owned several Fender, Peavey and Crate amps, as well as test drove several other brands, I have come to appreciate this Markbass combo. This Markbass amp has the best of many worlds. It can be played in standard position, tilted back or added to another 8 ohm cabinet. The sound is supreme with the shaping sounds included with the VLE and VPF features. The EQ is effective as it is. My bass has both active and passive pickup settings... I prefer the passive setting. This amp shaping has all the tweeks that I need. My style is plucking and I like a mellow sound. I play classic country, classic rock and roll, jazz and acid rock. All sound great through this amp. Add a creative sound tech and the possibilities are almost endless.

I used a friends Markbass 2x10 at a local jam session, and was instantly impressed. The bass sound was in your face without being too loud, clean and crisp and was so 'present' I had to hear more. Other bass jammers used the Markbass on rock, country, blues and even a few jazz songs and it performs flawlessly in all styles, so I bought one. I also have an external 2x10 cab, which turns this rig into a 500 watt BEAST..... buy one...you will NOT regret it.
