Two channels of legendary power and sound.

The Marshall DSL100H tube guitar amp head has footswitchable Classic Gain and Ultra channels, each boasting two modes – Clean/Crunch and Lead 1/Lead 2 respectively. These will take you from Plexi-style, pristine clean to JCM800 snarl, hot-rodded 2203, high gain lead and all points in-between. The flexibility of the shared 5-way EQ (Treble, Middle, Bass, Resonance and Presence) section is increased further by a Mid-Shift button – perfect for modern metal brutality.

A series FX loop on the rear panel (bypassable via an on/off switch) adds to the DSL100H’s professional flexibility, as does the Pentode (Full Power)/Triode (Half Power) switch which drops the power-amp’s output to 50-Watts. It also changes the amp’s tonal character as Triode mode produces a smoother, less aggressive sound.

Features

  • Two footswitchable channels – Classic Gain & Ultra Gain
  • Two Modes per channel for extra flexibility
  • Footswitchable, studio-quality, digital Reverb with Level control for each channel
  • Shared 5-way EQ – Treble, Middle, Bass, Presence & Resonance

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This head has great tone, even sounds good at very low volume, the reverb is weak on the ten setting and is just ok. I wish the footswitch was able to move between clean and classic and lead one and two on the ultra channel. I will have to modify in the future.

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been a professional musician playing shows for over 40 years. I've done everything from large concert venues to Pubs. Due to Tropical Storm Sandy I lost my beloved 1972 Fender Twin Reverb under 4 feet of water along with a bunch of other gear. Over the years I have mostly used Fender amplification and some small Marshall Combo amps. I decided to try a Marshall as I am currently playing mostly classic rock so I turned to MF. I play an American Strat, a Big Apple Strat and a Les Paul. I have always used stomp boxes to dial in the tone I want and I am often complimented on being a "Tone monster". When the DSL 100H arrived along with the MA 412 cabinet I plugged it in and was immediately amazed. This amp is so clean on the clean setting, the overdrive settings are killer and the Resonance gives me just the bottom end I want. Although some think that the speakers in that cabinet are shrill I think they do not know how to work with tone and equalization. It took some adjustment and learning the controls but once I dialed it in I was in love. I also connected it to a small Fender extension cabinet with a Celestian 80w and it is pure heaven. The bottom line is I can't wait for the next show as this amp on the 50 W or the 100 W setting is phenomenal. I get the exact sounds I am after and tone is what it is all about for me. Do not be afraid of the Viet Namm Manufactuing...this is all Marshall. It was supposed to be an updated DSL 2000 and it is a good update. This head should prove to be one of there better ones. I love it!!!

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

First of all, I've owned at one time or another Mesa Boogie Rectifier, Mesa Boogie M5, Orange Rockerver 50, Bogner Shiva, Soldano hot rod 100 plus, EVH 5150 and I had to sell them all when I got into money problems two years ago. And I think I have tried almost every amp on the planet cheap or expensive. So I have heard a lot of tones.

As far as this amp, channel 1 has a great clean tone. In fact, sparkling clean with a fender strat. The digital reverb is a very weak reverb and is very hard to notice that it is even there, but that's ok as I don't like too much reverb. When placing a multi effect unit such as a TC Nova in the loop, there is a huge drop in volume that I can't understand why. So I had to bring up the effects loop dry and wet to maximum, to get a decent volume back to original without effects in loop.

Channel 2 is what makes this amp great in getting that Marshall crunch on power chords and deep thick chunky "slash" tones on the E and A strings. And this amp can cut through the mix very well, and can get quite loud, even in medium halls.

The tones on the lead ch 2 (not ultra gain), are really smooth with harmonics that pop out unexpectedly,(this is where a lot of the amps in this price range fail). This harmonic tonal character is what I like about this amp and what I really judge an amp by. With this amp, I can get perfect Led Zepplin tones or even "slash" tones that are dead on. For metal, I need a boost and I use the TS9.

There is an ultra gain switch that I never use, because it makes the crisp "crunchy or chunky" distortion on the low E and A strings sound "muddy" and undefined. However, if we put a tube screamer in front of the amp then, the searing high gain lead kicks in without being muddy on the lower strings. It seems like Marshall could have spent more time designing the ultra gain channel and EQ it better and then I would have no need for a boost pedal.

Aside from these issues, the amp has tone that never ends, with boost pedal in or out. The amp seems to be well constructed and solid. This is a Vietnam made and Marshall designed amp, and I know some people may have a problem with that. But for the price, this amp beats all other amps. There is no amp priced this low with this great tone. This amp kills blackstar, Vox, Egnater, and every other amp in this price range when it comes to tone and I tried most of them.

So I think it's wise to keep away from the ultra gain channel on this amp. Because the ultra gain channel EQ is not to my taste or poorly designed and the Reverb is weak, I give this amp 4 stars out of 5. Still when it comes to tone that is thick and cuts though the mix and has all the great harmonics the I am used to in Marshalls, this amp delevirs and for a affordable price. I still wish I could someday get my hands on a Soldano Hot Rod 100 again, but that amp was like $2300, and this Marshall amp has just as good tone. I would recommend this amp as long as the price stays low.
