OVERVIEW

Two channels of legendary power and sound.

The Marshall DSL100H tube guitar amp head has footswitchable Classic Gain and Ultra channels, each boasting two modes - Clean/Crunch and Lead 1/Lead 2 respectively. These will take you from Plexi-style, pristine clean to JCM800 snarl, hot-rodded 2203, high gain lead and all points in-between. The flexibility of the shared 5-way EQ (Treble, Middle, Bass, Resonance and Presence) section is increased further by a Mid-Shift button - perfect for modern metal brutality.

A series FX loop on the rear panel (bypassable via an on/off switch) adds to the DSL100H's professional flexibility, as does the Pentode (Full Power)/Triode (Half Power) switch which drops the power-amp's output to 50-Watts. It also changes the amp's tonal character as Triode mode produces a smoother, less aggressive sound.

FEATURES
  • Two footswitchable channels - Classic Gain & Ultra Gain
  • Two Modes per channel for extra flexibility
  • Footswitchable, studio-quality, digital Reverb with Level control for each channel
  • Shared 5-way EQ - Treble, Middle, Bass, Presence & Resonance
  • Mid-Shift button adds to the amp's tonal flexibility
  • Pentode/Triode switch to drop power down from 100W to 50W

First of all, I've owned at one time or another Mesa Boogie Rectifier, Mesa Boogie M5, Orange Rockerver 50, Bogner Shiva, Soldano hot rod 100 plus, EVH 5150 and I had to sell them all when I got into money problems two years ago. And I think I have tried almost every amp on the planet cheap or expensive. So I have heard a lot of tones.

As far as this amp, channel 1 has a great clean tone. In fact, sparkling clean with a fender strat. The digital reverb is a very weak reverb and is very hard to notice that it is even there, but that's ok as I don't like too much reverb. When placing a multi effect unit such as a TC Nova in the loop, there is a huge drop in volume that I can't understand why. So I had to bring up the effects loop dry and wet to maximum, to get a decent volume back to original without effects in loop.

Channel 2 is what makes this amp great in getting that Marshall crunch on power chords and deep thick chunky "slash" tones on the E and A strings. And this amp can cut through the mix very well, and can get quite loud, even in medium halls.

The tones on the lead ch 2 (not ultra gain), are really smooth with harmonics that pop out unexpectedly,(this is where a lot of the amps in this price range fail). This harmonic tonal character is what I like about this amp and what I really judge an amp by. With this amp, I can get perfect Led Zepplin tones or even "slash" tones that are dead on. For metal, I need a boost and I use the TS9.

There is an ultra gain switch that I never use, because it makes the crisp "crunchy or chunky" distortion on the low E and A strings sound "muddy" and undefined. However, if we put a tube screamer in front of the amp then, the searing high gain lead kicks in without being muddy on the lower strings. It seems like Marshall could have spent more time designing the ultra gain channel and EQ it better and then I would have no need for a boost pedal.

Aside from these issues, the amp has tone that never ends, with boost pedal in or out. The amp seems to be well constructed and solid. This is a Vietnam made and Marshall designed amp, and I know some people may have a problem with that. But for the price, this amp beats all other amps. There is no amp priced this low with this great tone. This amp kills blackstar, Vox, Egnater, and every other amp in this price range when it comes to tone and I tried most of them.

So I think it's wise to keep away from the ultra gain channel on this amp. Because the ultra gain channel EQ is not to my taste or poorly designed and the Reverb is weak, I give this amp 4 stars out of 5. Still when it comes to tone that is thick and cuts though the mix and has all the great harmonics the I am used to in Marshalls, this amp delevirs and for a affordable price. I still wish I could someday get my hands on a Soldano Hot Rod 100 again, but that amp was like $2300, and this Marshall amp has just as good tone. I would recommend this amp as long as the price stays low.

Maybe I had a unit that was poorly biased? But I don't have time to change tubes and re-bias. I need something that rocks right out of the box. The gain channel on this amp had zero warmth. I found it sterile and completely unusable. The clean channel was good like you would expect from Marshall. The digital reverb was very very weak. I've owned two JCM2000 units over the years, and bought this one as a replacement for one that died. The gain channel sounds nothing like the JCM2000. All tubes fired up and were working fine. Musician's Friend was great and let me return the amp, and exchange it for something else. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Until recently, I was playing 7 string guitars that were highly modded into Peavey high gain amps. I am/was a brutal metal head.

I had a change of heart a few weeks ago when my Peavey XXX went down. I saw it as an opportunity to change my sound. SO i did a little research and came across this.

I also bought a Gibson SG when I ordered this amp. I plugged the SG into the Marshall and was simply blown away.

This Marshall is the epitome of all that is rock n' roll. Has a great warm sound. No doubt.

For rock, this is a GREAT amplifier.

IF you are looking to get some blistering extreme metal sounds you are GOING TO NEED A BOOST/OD in front of this amp. With a boost/od you can reminisce the classic Death Metal sounds from the mid-90's.

Now, the cool part about this amp is that it has the, what I call, the classic "Marshall Mud."

That means when you turn up the gain past 9, it tends to get muddy. It sounds like the tubes are ready to explode. (not that they will, but thats what they sound like). IF you are looking to play some sludge metal. This is also your amp.

Lastly it has the classic Marshall clean. Sounds awesome. Highly recommend.

Do not expect a Peavey or a Mesa. It's a Marshall. Marshall is in a league of its own.

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been on a journey trying to find a new tube head and this is the 3rd Marshall head I've tried.

Before I get into the amp review, I had to note that the MF customer service is 2nd to none. They have been exceptional dealing with me returning and trying different amps.

This amp is loud, but the sound quality of this amp is lousy! The clean channel is just average for cleans and ok for some crunch. The ultra gain channel is useless. Possibly some decent sounds with the gain on 2, but anything after that is mud to muddier. The reverb is practically unnoticeable.

I don't have the best speaker cabinet, but I can't use this as an excuse for this amp. I compared it to my cheap Kustom 5w head and the Kustom had those punchy crisp tones you would expect from a tube amp.

To Marshalls defense, this was a restock item and maybe this amp was defective. This is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1 star.

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

First off, I've wanted a Marshall ever since I was 15 because all my heroes had them... that was 21 years ago. I've owned a Peavey Ultra Plus 120 for years and it took a lot of tweaking to get close to the sound I wanted but it never felt like I was "one" with that amp. Enter the DSL 100H...

This thing is a tone beast with enough power to bring any drummer into submission. I've used it with passive and active pickups and it sounds phenomenal on every channel with every guitar I own. I run an SD-1 overdrive in front of the amp and an eq in the loop to push it over the edge and the amp shines on its own but with that OD out front it tightens up and accentuates every nuance of your playing. I can get blues tones, crystal clear cleans (never had a clean channel as good as this) and thick, crushing distortion that gets me as close to my sound as I think I'm ever going to get. Got this amp from Musicians Friend on sale and it's worth every penny. I haven't tried the C19 mod others have mentioned but I kind of like the high end cut that it brings to the OD2 channel. I look forward to modding this thing in the future after the amp techies dissect it.

I have only a few minor complaints (who doesn't with anything?). The footswitch is really sub-par with no indicator lights and it only controls the reverb and the channel switching for 2 channels only. I'll be looking to build my own with LEDs and control over switching from Clean, OD1 and OD2. Also, the Ultra gain channel gets really mushy when gain is pushed past 6 but sounds great at higher gain with an OD pedal. I've learned that less is more when it comes to gain and this beast has way more gain than anyone would ever need. The mush is most likely due to the stock Marshall tubes which I'll be replacing with JJs when it's time. Separate EQs for channels would be nice but it's not a deal breaker.

I can't see parting with this amp ever. I didn't really "need" a new guitar amp but when I tried this out at the beach this summer I knew I had to have it. I tried out the Mesas, Oranges, Peaveys (basically anything they had) and my non-guitar buddy that was with me could hear the superiority of this amp over all the others.

Comments about Marshall DSL100H 100W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Great amp. Im currently running it through a mg412a cheap marshall cab and it still sounds great. Reverb is a little weak but throw a HOF reverb pedal in the loop and that takes care of that. The distortion is great and put a tube screamer with the mid scoop button and you got a great metal sound. Leave it as is with no pedal and let the angus come out. My drummer plays really loud, dont they all, and this puppy can keep right up. You can.get a ton of sounds from it out of the box adds some pedals and you can get anything you are looking for. would have liked to see the made in uk on it but for the price it is what it is. Its got good loks and seems pretty sturdy.

Just got my DSL 100H an hour ago, had no idea it was so huge at least compared to my old 1975 Acoustic 150 head that I have had since high school. I'm using the Acoustic cab with its (6) 10" speakers, and they never knew this kind of full range power before, they like it a lot!

Just being in the same room with this bad boy is a little intimidating. I feel a little like Wayne and Garth in Wayne's World as though I should be on my knees bowing and saying "I'm not Worthy"

I took over 40 years for me to own a Marshall, my self rather than dream about it as a kid and an adult. Its everything I hoped it would be, even has its own unique "smell" when its on un like anything else I have had.

It will be some time before I fully grasp all this bad boy can do, and I intend to rock the house, the block, and the entire neighborhood figuring it all out!
