This pedal is awesome. A true Marshall sound in a pedal. This pedal really does recreate the distorion on the old JCM800. I know my friend has one. There are good and bad about this pedal its not all peaches and cream. The bad is the treble control dosen't really work.(for getting the mud sound out) It does change a little, but not enough to really matter. This does produce a muddie distorion which with the right setting can take it away to get the true Marshall crunch sound. Theres a lot of good about the pedal. The distorion is the best I have heard from a pedal beside tube distorion pedals at a (awesome price). To fix the muddiness that comes from the pedal put a eq pedal after it so to can get rid of that mudiness and make that distorion scream. Anyone who knows a true marshall sound will love this pedal if you have a eq pedal or time to fiddle around with the eq on it for that Marshall crunch you will enjoy this pedal like I have thx Marshall.

I've had this pedal for two years and it's been in and out of my chain constantly throughout this time. I bought it when I was still learning about effects, and at the time adding a "Marshall drive sound" to my Pro Junior and still have pocket money left over seemed a great idea. Unfortunately, as I got further on I realised I don't like to use heavy distortion. While it does sound AMAZING in this area, turning the gain down renders it unbelievably mushy, and it doesn't seem to offer much in the way of dynamic response. I much prefer subtle overdrive or all-out fuzz ala Big Muff, so this doesn't fit too well. Because of it's inability to do "subtle", it only really gets use when I decide to play 'Orion'.One thing I have found out though, is that thanks to it's "deep" setting, it works surprisingly well with basses. It's a great pedal, just not for me.

One useful pedal

Perfect for a nice overdrive to Van Halen inspired rock. Setting the gain to 2-4 gives you a good overdrive which is perfect for AC/DC and other 70's rock. Once you get to 4 and up, it's that nice meaty sound that Marshall is known for. I use it to crank out Van Halen tones and haven't been dissapointed. My Vox has a good clean tone, but the drive isn't so hot. I sort of use this as the drive channel. You also can use it as a sort of EQ. I turn the gain down and use the settings as I would on my amp. It helps to keep my tone consistant with what the distorted tone sounds like. Overall, I love this. Best bit of money I've spent. Definately has a permanent place among my rig.

Ask me a question

This is a great pedal because not only do you get the famous and enviable Marshall sound... IN A PEDAL! You also get a really good EQ, that covers sub-bass, bass/low-mids, mids, and highs without a lot of noise. And it is built like a brick house. All for well under a hundred bucks... do not delay.

Almost perfect sound

By Deven Lyre

from Washington

If you take a great clean sounding tube amp like a Fender Twin, plug this in front of it as an overdrive and you get an incredible sound. Very clear overdrive sounding almost identical to a Marshall JCM800. It does not give you a real heavy metal "chunk" sound, but it does give a fantastic AC/DC or The Cult "Electric" sound. You can hear each note ring clear when hitting a big open G chord.

Plenty of Bang for your Buck...

This pedal is well worth the price of admission. The closest my Fender Tube amp ever came to Marshall crunch, is with this pedal. There is a silly amount of low end to this pedal, probably more than a single twelve inch speaker can reproduce. But it is abvious that Marshall did their homework, and delivered a quality pedal at a reasonable price. I'll guarantee that there are pedals out there that cost more, and sound much worse.

great sound if you know how to tweak it.

By guitarslinger48

I use this pedal in front of a 70's Marshall MK2 Super Lead for extra push. Marshall put a useless amount of low end in this pedal. I have the "deep control" turned off and the bass set at about7-8 o'clock. Mid is set at 10 o'clock, treble at 11 o'clock, gain at 1 o'clock,. I get a nice creamy overdrive with my American Fender Fat Strat.

Sweet Pedal

By theGeek57

I have had this Pedal for w while now. I was skeptical when I bought it because I didn't need/want another distortion pedal. I've got a Boss DS-1, Tube Screamer, Digitech Bad Monkey, Big Muff Pi and really adding another pedal was kind of pointless. Since then I have not even touched my other pedals. This gives me the sound I've wanted. The DEEP control is just wonderful. If I want to play more of a Metal/Hardcore sound I just scoop the mids and put everything else up. I can pull the gain back for a nice crunch. Its a great pedal for any setup.

Is a Good Pedal, Sounds Better Than the sound Clip

By OneDrunkIrishman

from East Coast

This pedal is really great. It does exactly what it's supposed to, and the tone out of it really is what I was looking for. If you're going for a good rock sound with awesome tone, this is great. Make sure you mess around with the EQ so that you can get the sound you want. it's really really user friendly.

Definitive Marshall Sound

By Veld

from New Jersey

See all my reviews

I've played through a handful of Marshalls, mainly MG series combos, and I really have to say this pedal trumps even those. It is unbelievably versatile if you take the time to tweak it. Can go from a warm crunch all the way to a killer metal distortion. The Deep knob allows a kind of emulated 'scooped mid' sound. It's not the real deal but it comes pretty close. A must have for any serious OD/disto buff.

An Awesome Pedal

By Bryan-070jm

See all my reviews

I've been searching for a really good distortion pedal. I just couldn't find a pedal that I liked. This is the best pedal I've ever played. It is very easy to control and get the exact sound you're looking for, most pedals don't have as many knobs to adjust on them or are as customizable as this one. I don't think I could ever play another pedal.

THE BEST

I've had this pedal for about two years and it is the best for the money. The famous 'Marshall Crunch' is only one of the features you get out of this pedal. It is a must-have for any pedalboard.

Sends your pedalboard into puberty...

Here's what I got in my unit: Ernie Ball Volume pedal, Ibanez TS9DX Tube Screamer, the GV-2, Boss CH1 Chorus, Line 6 DL4, and the Korg DT-10 tuner played by an Epiphone LP100 running through the all tube Peavey Classic 50.What I mean by the title of this review is that the pedal has INCREDIBLE lows; if you have a lot of tinny, too-much-high EQ problems with your effects unit, I STRONGLY recommend this pedal. I love the added "Deep" feature added to the Bass, Mid, and High knobs on the pedal. The distortion really is pretty good on this pedal.... HOWEVER, I consider myself a tonefreak and I am having a difficult time getting rid of the muddiness with the pedal. I've tried adjusting everything from the Gain to the EQ to the Volume on it and I set my amp to clean and am still having some problems with it. But my guitar does need some major work on the action and new strings. I do get some REALLY heavy and clean sounding distortion when I run it with the Tube Screamer, but the muddiness is still faintly there.... but all in all, it's a great distortion pedal with INCREDIBLE lows....

Yup! its the one....

I play out through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Several songs we do needed that Marshall crunch sound we all know. With no intention of spending 2K to get it, I started looking for a pedal that could get me close. After reading reviews on the Gov'nor here and at Harmony Central I decided I would bite and try one. Now...let me tell you that upon setting the HRD to clean and simply following the recommended settings that came with this pedal, I was simply blown away. This pedal is hot for sure. I got all I was looking for and more. Only drawback is that you wont be adjusting any of the knobs on a dark stage, as to hard to see. OK by me as I have set it and will be leaving it right where it is. It is better with humbuckers than single coils FYI.

Awesome

By Anonymous

This pedal sounds amazing through a tube amp. Just make sure your not turned really low, you need some power driving the tubes. This pedal sounds really good and it was better than I expected. It even responds like a tube, when I turn down my guitar's volume the drive level goes down.

Great sound

I've had the Guv'nor for a few months now, and thought I should comment on it. I really like it, you can get a great sound dialed in fairly quickly. All the knobs are functional and appropriate. Overall, it's a nice drive. I run it though an Epiphone 50 watt tube head, into a Marshall 1960 cab. Bottom line, if you aren't getting what you want from your head's gain channel, or you just want an extra flavor in your sound, definitely grab one of these. . .it's built solid, and sounds great. Amen.

OK until it died

By Old Rock & Roller

from Pt. Pleasant, NJ

See all my reviews

I've had this Marshall Gov'nor pedal for about a year & a half. I used it on a pedal board with a Strat thru an early 90's vintage Blues De Ville hybrid tube amp. Not much of a tone range. The controls are not very responsive. Suggested settings that came with the instruction book were not much use. By itself the sound it produces is rather uninteresting & flat. When combined with a DS-1, though, I could get a really nice fat sound that was useful for a lot of things. But, last week it died. I don't plan to get another one.

this truly is 'a Marshall in a box'! Seriously, if you dig that Marshall roar, but can't afford a hug stack, you will love this. NO, it is not the same as a stack, don't get me wrong, but there are so many dirt boxes out there trying to emulate the Marshall tone... forget them, this is it.
