Comments about Maxon Vintage Series CS550 Stereo Chorus Pedal:

I ordered this because, after listening to dozens of chorus pedals online and trying some out in stores, I expected it to sound best. I liked the sound I heard in online videos.

It is pretty expensive, and it's a Maxon so I expected top-quality. It is well-built, but I didn't expect to have these performance issues.

I'm playing an American Vintage 62 reissue Fender Strat through a modified Fender HRD. The sound wasn't as delicious as I thought. I thought the pedal sounded piercingly shrill.

Also, this pedal is enormous. You will need extra space on your pedalboard. Given the limited features, there's no reason for it to be so huge. There are only three knobs on top. I do like the large knobs, but the pedal could have been much smaller still.

The main reason I returned it is the unavoidable volume boost. There's a tiny trim knob on the back for adjusting the level of the "chorus" effect. This knob only brings the effect up and down, so what you get - if you want to hear the chorus effect at all - is double the volume! This causes all sorts of problems for me: extra dirt from my amp, tons of noise from my guitar, and an overly bright sound (even after playing with the delay knob).

After sending it back (having to pay for shipping both ways really sucks, MF!!), I went back to the brick and mortar store that didn't have this item in stock and played pedals that I had tried before and wasn't sure about. I ended up getting a Diamond Halo Chorus, which is also expensive, but has the qualities I desire in a chorus pedal. This is now my third Diamond pedal, so I guess I've become a Diamond user.

The moral of the story is... buyer beware, and be prepared to spend $25 in shipping costs if you make a mistake.

Awesome pedal!!

Comments about Maxon Vintage Series CS550 Stereo Chorus Pedal:

It took me years to find a really good chorus pedal. Ive been looking for almost 20 years now, and Ive owned almost every option available in the market. A month ago, I got the chance to work in a session with a musician that has the CS550 and I was impressed. If you are really looking for a high quality pedal and your hears let you understand the difference between a high end piece of equipment and a beginners gizmo, GET IT NOW. It worth every penny if your ears are trained to discern. There are lots of reviews on youtube for you to hear.
