Wasn't really in the market for a fuzz pedal (was looking for more of a distortion to use with my Joyo Ultimate Drive) but just loved the design of this little guy and at the Warehouse price, I couldn't pass it up.

Wasn't too fond of ModTone products previously - I purchased the mini-overdrive and it was absolutely terrible so was nervous how this guy would sound. Got it in the mail, plugged it in and wow! Not what I was expecting. This pedal is more of a distortion with fuzz on top. Now I must add that there really is no "subtle" setting on this guy - I literally have my Fuzz knob turned to the very left and I still get a heavy trashy distortion (however, I'm also using an LTD EC-1000 with active EMGs but still...) It's a fantastic sounding distortion! I can already tell this will cut through a mix nicely when playing with my band and when I kick on my Ultimate Drive, I get a beautiful lead tone, almost "metal" territory (Although, I wouldn't recommend this for metal - it's way better for grunge and hard rock.)

If you're still seeing this for the sale price, I'd definitely consider snagging one. Definitely a sleeper pedal in my book.

I was looking forward to receiving this pedal based on the advertising and reviews and the sale price was hard to resist. I was very disappointed upon trying it out, however, as it immediately produced a very loud hiss at any volume. What's more I could only get it to produce anything resembling a "Fuzz" when it was cranked all the way up, and then the effect decayed almost right away leaving a clean sound for most of the sustain of any chord or note played through it. I have returned thia for a replacement but if the same problems reoccur I will ask for a refund.

I could not find any setting that was useful or noise free enough to use onstage or in the studio. Buzz boy does buzz when turned on, very noisy.

Want that ear slicing punk sound? Here ya go... The Fizz dials up the high end, the Fuzz dials in your low to mid range, and the fluff makes it loud.. and theres a button on it that turns it on and off.. crazy idea?!?!?! YES. Quite thrashy... worth a whirl. DOOOOO IT! Also eat your veggies.

Comments about Modtone MT-BB Buzz Boy Power Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've been playing live music for decades, but I'm relatively new to the world of guitar effects chains. I saw that this pedal only had a single 1-star review, and that's just not right. I bought it thru Musician's Friend's Stupid Deal of the Day, and at that price it was a total steal. But even at regular price, I'd say it's reasonable. I already owned a Boss DS-2, which has some tones I really like but compresses the signal a lot...I need to ride that pedal's output level near the max to keep the bass from disappearing.

By contrast, the Buzz Boy does not seem to compress the signal as much, and I'm able to get some pretty punchy lows out of it. As far as I can tell, "Fuzz" = distortion, "Fizz" = tone, and "Fluff" = level. Setting Fuzz and Fizz near 12 o'clock gives me a pretty aggressive tone, and the pedal has plenty of volume. Pushing those controls closer to 3 o'clock yields some nasty shreddy goodness, if you like that kind of thing. The mellower end of the spectrum is way different, and there's plenty of territory in between.

I did not experience the noise problem described by the previous reviewer...to the contrary, in fact. Seems cleaner than my Boss.

Chaining the 2 distortion pedals together yields some insanely torrential sounds and ridiculous sustain...but only if you go from the highly compressing DS-2 to the Modtone Buzz Boy...not so much the other way around.

Comments about Modtone MT-BB Buzz Boy Power Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

Not exactly what I was looking for in a fuzz pedal, but it is very cheap. The biggest problem with this is the sound quality, it acts more like a standard distortion than a fuzz. When rolling back volume on the guitar not much changed as far as clarity as would happen with something like a fuzz face. The second thing would be the dumb names they put on the knobs they do not help you understand what is going on, and don't seem to do much when manipulated. Overall it seems to be another one trick pony "fuzz". I would not recommend this but instead save some money up and buy either one of the FULLTONE fuzz pedals, or a standard DUNLOP fuzz face.

Comments about Modtone MT-BB Buzz Boy Power Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

I rocked the Buzz Boy with a Strat and a Tele through a modified tweed Deluxe style amp. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly for the price. It's got a punchy sound with broad-shouldered mids, beefy rather than thin sounding. It is fairly responsive. There are enough crackly sonic artifacts that you know you're playing a fuzz rather than your precious transparent overdrive, but it doesn't hit my ear like a Fuzz Face and certainly not like a Tone Bender or Maestro Fuzz Tone. In fact, it buzzes less than many other fuzz circuits, so the name seems ironic.

I've tried the Xotic fuzzy drive and the big Dunlop Hendrix fuzz face so compared to those I like this better. I was able to a/b it with the fuzz face and I found the fuzz face to be a little harsh compared to it. The real draw back to the fuzz face's though is the lack of a tone control. Also when you try to dial back the fuzz, the high frequencies disappear (at least on the big Hendrix one) so you're left having to run the fuzz at 10 and dialing back your guitar volume. That works well but then leaves you with an overall level problem if you're playing live. Dialing back the fuzz on this ModTone is not a problem. Bottom line is I kept this and sold the fuzz face. if you use a fuzz pedal infrequently like I do you'll find that this one sounds just fine. I play a Les Paul.

Comments about Modtone MT-BB Buzz Boy Power Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was looking for a novel effect to add to my pedal board. The Stupid Deal of the Day served this one up, and I bit. The problem is, turning the fizz anywhere beyond zero makes it unbearably fizzy (duh).

The good news is, this pedal should be a perfect vessel for adding those guitar sounds to a mix that sound awful on their own, but really liven up a rock song. Not sure if that sounds like a compliment, but I mean it to be.

Also, if you roll back the guitar volume, with the fizz at no more than 9 o'clock, you can get some very nice chunk with your pick (depending on the two other parameters).

Comments about Modtone MT-BB Buzz Boy Power Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal:

This was my first Modtone pedal. Before this I was completely unfamiliar with Modtone products, but I was looking for a fuzz pedal and MF had this on sale so I gave it a go. I was a little frustrated with this pedal at first which leads to its one drawback, ease of use.

The three controls are labeled fizz, fuzz and fluff and, at first, I thought they were cutesy, unconventional replacements for the standard control names like what DOD used to do back in the '90's. When I first started using the pedal fizz seemed to correspond to tone, fuzz was fuzz and fluff was level; and I wasn't able to find the tones I was looking for. With further experimentation I discovered that the controls are extremely interactive and with a little fiddling you will discover an extremely wide range of sounds.

The interactive nature of the controls enables you to find everything from vintage '60's fuzz to extreme modern sounds and everything in between but the price of this versatility is the loss of ease of use but, like everything else, this gets better with practice.

After this first pedal I have become a Modtone fan and have added four more of their pedals to my collection. All of the pedals have excellent quality components and build. They have all been worth full price and are bargains on sale. Modtone also seems to listen to criticism, coming out with new versions of older pedals that address the complaints of users, you gotta love that.
