Not just another fuzzbox, but also a preamp!

The ModTone MT-DS Speedbox distortion pedal emulates the tones of a vintage amp or classic overdrive and is housed in a compact all metal box that can take all you dish out. It's not just another fuzzbox. It's also a preamp in itself.

The ModTone distortion pedal features a simple 3-knob configuration for overdrive bliss. Starting with a custom-tailored Tone knob, you can dial in just the right amount of sparkle and warmth while still retaining all the crunch and tonal clarity you love without a hint of noise. Next is the Drive knob and it's truly where the heart of this pedal lies. The custom-voiced overdrive circuit and proprietary gain stage setting allow you the option of getting a delicious overdrive tone from your clean amp or combine it with your amp's overdrive setting to achieve a thick and creamy lead boost that sustains for days. Last up is the Level control that allows you to select the perfect amount of gain whether your style is a touch of the blues or an all-out metal blitzkrieg.

The Modtone MT-DS Speedbox, like the whole family of ModTone effect pedals, features period-correct, vintage-style components, smooth linear taper pots, high-impact switches built for the floor and top quality jacks for optimum tonal transfer.

Get the vintage sound you've been looking for with the ModTone MT-DS.

It's a pretty awesome little box. Great stuff for an excellent price. It's been built sturdy and seems like it would last a fair while. Modtone has set the standard high at such a low price.
The Pedal obviously comes with its standard distortion function, and has three knobs to change and accustom to the sort of distortion style you are after. It's pretty basic stuff. However, after tinkering around with it, I've managed to set it to various different styles from thrash to crunch and hi gain. I love to layer and layer my axe with distortion and it does it justice. However, keeping in mind, I do reside in an apartment, there is a maximum level of sound I am required to adhere to (and it sucks big time ==") and whenever I turn up the gain, it does increase the volume which makes it difficult to compromise.
Great price and deal ! It's an amazing price you pay for what you get.

The ModTone Speedbox has a fine tone, fine features, and fine construction. However, when I stomp the thing on, my output volume is cut by a few DB's. Unacceptable. Only when I have the gain AND volume cranked does the volume match the clean signal. Very dissapointing.

Comments about Modtone MT-DS Speedbox Distortion Pedal:

I have several pedals but this one has the best distortion tone of the bunch. It's also very quiet and easy to dial in. However, mine suffers from the same shortcoming as many of the other reviewers have noted...there is a significant volume drop when switching the distortion off. I'm not a professional so for the money I can live with it, but I don't think I'd want to use this if I were gigging due to that issue. It's a real shame as this pedal has potential for greatness.

Comments about Modtone MT-DS Speedbox Distortion Pedal:

I bought the Mod-Tone MT-DS to use with my steel guitar rig & had ok results. However when used with my Les Paul & Twin Reverb it was very weak & DID NOT deliver a good sound. I tried other guitars & amps with the same POOR results. I noticed a CUT in the volume & tone when the unit was switched to the on position...I soon took it off my pedal board. The unit (along with 4 other Mod Tone pedals) arrived with a dead battery. The battery compartment is difficult to access, requiring the back to be removed by 4 small phillip head screws. I quickly learned MOD TONE DOES NOT HAVE A CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE & exchanging emails with them took days that became weeks. Despite their "5 year warranty" any problems I had with them resulted in poor (NONE) results. I don't reccomend any MOD TONE products.

Comments about Modtone MT-DS Speedbox Distortion Pedal:

Far and above, the closest sound to a classic vintage overdriven Marshall Amp in my opinion. Very wide tone range, especially considering it only has one tone control. Lightweight but sturdy and has a smaller footprint than a Boss pedal. Sounds great for Zeppelin, AC/DC, ZZ Top,etc.

Number one, the price was right on this since it was a Stupid Deal of the Day. It is also the first stomp box I've owned. I'm very pleased with it.

Comments about Modtone MT-DS Speedbox Distortion Pedal:

This is a great distortion pedal for the price; I grabbed it as the SDOTD. It's fairly versatile in the sounds you can get. You can coax a lighter OD, rock, or even metal out of it. It gets really noisy after the gain gets past 12 o'clock. You definitely need some some sort of noise gate on your rig if you're planning on really high gains. Don't think too hard on this one -- just grab it.

Comments about Modtone MT-DS Speedbox Distortion Pedal:

I bought this pedal as a Stupid Deal of the day to put in front of my Fender head to use as a boost. I know there are better pedals out there but this pedal is solid in every way for the money. Good range of distortion from boost up to a nice usable drive. It has true bypass and is very quiet even with the gain at max. If you are looking to buy a good distortion pedal to start with and not looking to spend much money this is a perfect option. I like it better than my modded Boss DS1.
