OVERVIEW

Not your big brother's distortion pedal.

There are about a million overdrive pedals on the market. Oops, five seconds passed while you were reading that sentence. Now there are 1.1 million distortion pedals on the market. What makes the MF Drive different? A lot of things.

The MF Drive is a unique, filter-based overdrive pedal that employs a Moog Ladder Filter, boutique FET amplifiers, and classic OTAs in its drive section making it highly reactive to input gain and picking dynamics. The bi-polar tone control and sweep-able filter work with input gain to offer each player completely customizable sounds from creamy British overdrive to cranked American tube amplifier and even fuzz. When the filter Peak switch is engaged and an expression pedal is connected, the harmonic content is shifted to the filter’s cutoff position adding tonal and dirty wah performance possibilities not found elsewhere.

CONTROLS
GAIN- Sets the input level sent through the OTA before passing through the 4-pole Moog Ladder filter. At lower settings, the MF Drive is cleaner with a smooth breakup. As Gain increases, OTA and filter distortion increase causing the MF Drive to become more aggressive and reactive to picking dynamics.

DRIVE - In the down position the Gain knob range is from +6.8dB to +48dB. In the up position the gain range is from +16dB to +57dB. This allows for extended control over gain-staging the input of the MF Drive.

FILTER- Interacts heavily with the Tone knob and filter Peak switch. With Peak off, the filter can be used to reduce top end and add heft to an amplifier. With Peak engaged, the filter can be used to add low, mid, or high frequency boost to your instrument. The MF-Drive by nature has a large bottom end, so this position is extremely useful for dialing in a more focused guitar tone.

PEAK- When engaged, Peak creates a +15dB boost at the Filter cutoff. It is extremely useful for accentuating mid-range or high frequencies. When paired with an expression pedal, Peak unlocks a whole new range of performance sounds.

TONE- A variable Lowpass/Mid-Scoop/Highpass voicing section sent through a boutique FET for color. At minimum, the sound is dark and full. Approaching the Mid position the sound varies from a slightly scooped American tube amp to a more British, mid-forward tone. At maximum position, the sound is present and articulate with a smooth, rolled of low-end.

OUTPUT- The output level of the MF-DRIVE is extremely hot to offer a wide range of tones from clean to dirty. With proper gain-staging, the MF Drive can also be used as a boost or wah pedal.

EXPRESSION PEDAL INPUT- This input is assigned to Filter cutoff. Use it for massive swells or engage filter Peak to create a tunable dirty wah. This setting sounds amazing on bass guitar.

I bought it for the Moog ladder filter, which delivers what I wanted. I run synths through it, and they just get really big and fat sounding, and you can sweep the filter cutoff knob all day to great effect. There is a reason this filter is so famous...it sounds great. I did have to replace the knob with a larger one that's easier to jam on and less painful. Increasing the overdrive adds an extra dimension to the sound, and interacts heavily with the filter tone.

On guitar and bass, it offers a dark, fuzzy drive with a lot of attitude. The filter takes a back seat to the drive function for this use. Right up my alley. So, a versatile pedal useful for any number of instruments or tones.

I have not yet tried it with an expression pedal or control voltage, but that sounds like a lot of fun to get some hands free action going with the filter sweep, which is where the money is to me. I hope to run LFO or envelope signals from a Microbrute or MS-20 mini in the future.

Top quality pedal, especially as a Stupid Deal of the Day which is where I got mine. The synthesis features Moog offers in their pedal designs makes them very appealing to the electronically minded musician. Very sturdy build quality, and it looks great. Love it.

You can tweak the sound on this pedal so much that I feel bad for not giving it a five star review. It's very well built, quiet and the tone filter on this pedal is great. But I just wasn't that impressed with the "types" of distortion it creates.

The descriptions from Moog and from various promotional videos (some from Moog themselves) talk about being able to get a really wide variety of tones - from smooth, responsive overdrive to crunchy American or British amp tones to classic fuzz tones to heavy distortion. This pedal can give you a good approximation of any of those. There are plenty of good tones to be had. But as a fuzz, it's not going to replace a dedicated fuzz. As a heavy distortion, it's not going to replace a dedicated heavy distortion pedal. And so on.

I have about a half dozen drive pedals that I was hoping this might replace but I was never quite able to dial in the same tones I was looking for. Personally, I'd rather just stick with a few well-loved pedals that I can just plug in and jam with. Sorry Moog.

Comments about Moog Minifooger Drive Guitar Overdrive Effects Pedal:

I purchased this without trying it out because of the filter sweep (I have owned Moog synths). When I first plugged it in I was disappointed there didn't seem to be a lot of distortion. My guitar was not turned up very much. This pedal is VERY sensitive/responsive to input level. You can change from a bluesy crunch to all-out fat distortion just using the guitar output level. The filter gives you very active voicing. I have ordered the EP3 expression pedal as well to control on the fly but have not yet received it. I use a Les Paul into a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. It sounds great!

Comments about Moog Minifooger Drive Guitar Overdrive Effects Pedal:

This is a good but quirky pedal. It's basically a cross between a wah pedal and an overdrive, moreso the latter--reverse that if you plug in an expression pedal.

I'm not sure how else to describe this thing. It makes some crazy tones. I don't think it's too expensive for what it is: crazy versatile. Seems really well built too, but that's secondary to the variety of sounds you can push out of this thing.

Speaking of which, that's sort of the pedal's "weakness," if I can call it that. To a certain extent, this pedal is better suited to the electronic musician than the typical guitarist. If you're looking for a sweet, transparent overdrive for blues, or something to dime and plug into a Recto for tru br00tal, there are LOTS of better, cheaper options for both. This pedal can do those, by the way, but you'll be wasting 3/4 of the circuits.

The tone shaping features of this pedal make it one of a kind--and NOT for the faint of heart. You've got to experiment, a LOT, to get your money's worth. Kyuss-like neck tones are the most immediate results that other rockers (like myself) will find, but with boost, OD, and robust envelope controls, this pedal has so many more possibilities. Finding the good ones, though, the ones that suit YOU best, is your own responsibility.

I love the unique sound of this pedal. HOWEVER you should all know that I have tried two of these and they both degrade your signal and change the EQ curve of your tone when the pedal is OFF. It's so frustrating. I tried asking Moog about it, and they said they've never received this complaint before. I am an audiophile, so I can hear these things. Moog, please fix.

Very cool overdrive pedal. It has a couple of dipswitches that effect the gain and the eq peak hump. And the filter knob (can be controlled by external expression pedal) is very unique. On it's own it is just that, a sweep filter. With a expression pedal, it can acts like a serious wah effect. Nothing else like this pedal that I've come across.

Hand made in NC, USA. The Moog tradition continues. This is a great sounding drive pedal, tons of range on the drive and the tone.

I got the Moog Expression Pedal also, which allows you to play this like a wah. (Moog is known for their filters).

Plays well with my other drive pedals (TS808, OCS, Plimsoul) by putting it last in the chain before the amp. I will probably buy the Minifooger Delay next, even though I already have 3 other delay pedals.

The MF Drive is a unique sounding drive pedal. While it is definitely not for "metal heads," it has a very unique sound quality. The sound almost reminds me of a overdriven synth, or kind of a saw-tooth wave sound. It sounds great when used lightly on the edge of break up or as an all-out fuzz, but I would not use it as a primary drive pedal.

It's waaaay warm.. serious coloration to the sound, which can be awesome but it's not very versatile in my opinion. I'd recommend it to someone looking for something specific.

Comments about Moog Minifooger Drive Guitar Overdrive Effects Pedal:

I have played for over 30 years and have owned dozens of distortion/overdrive pedals over the years. This is a very nicely built pedal which was clearly built with quality components. It is one of the quietest overdrive/distortion pedals I have owned even with the gain cranked. There are some wonderful sounds available from blues overdrive to heavy rock distortion. Lots of gain and lots of volume boost available. Due to the tweakability however, there are also a lot of really terrible tones to be found. It takes quite some time to find ones tone here. Probably a great pedal for recording. I would be hesitant to use live due to the difficulty i have had finding that tone. It's there but hard to find! Would recommend to the guitarist who is interested in the variety of tonal options. For this player a good pedal when on sale. Not sure I would pay full price
