OVERVIEW

Legendary MXR internal circuitry delivers increased dynamic range, amazing transparency, and an ultra-quiet operation.

The MXR Custom Comp effect pedal is built from the finest components available and designed with a blend of modern and classic compressor technology. At the heart of the compressor pedal resides the legendary and rare CA3080 "metal can" IC that delivers increased dynamic range, greater transparency, and quieter operation. In addition, the MXR Custom Shop design team included RF suppression components into the compressor pedal for interference-free operation, and an internal attack control that allows fine-tuning of the speed of the note's initial attack. Combined with a TPDT (Triple Pole Double Throw) switch for true bypass and heavy-duty pots, the MXR Custom Comp CSP202 compressor pedal will provide years of high performance live and in the studio.

The MXR compressor pedal can be powered by one 9V battery (sold separately).

The Custom Comp is clearly the best value MXR compressor you can buy. It costs significantly less than the Custom Shop Dynacomp Script RI, yet it uses the same CA3080 IC, has true bypass switching, a battery eliminator jack and internal trim pots for additional tone shaping. It definitely costs more than a regular Dynacomp. But, at least in my experience, the Custom Comp is in an entirely different league than the block logo D.C. The difference in price is more than worth it when you consider that you are getting a much better product. The standard Dynacomp is good. The Custom Comp kills it.

"Poor sound quality" (?) "Weak in compressing the signal" (?) Really? If you actually take the time to read the manual and bother to adjust the attack and trim controls, you can achieve a wide range of excellent sounding tones, including that classic Dynacomp "squash". "Noisy" (?) I was really surprised to have read that in another review here, because this pedal is significantly quieter than my MXR Super Comp (which I like) or any other compressor I've owned.

This is the circuit that so many of the boutique compressors are based on or just blatantly rip off. People talk in hushed tones about the fabled Ross compressor. Yet, that pedal is just a refined D.C. that gets more hype than it actually deserves (IMO). I think Dunlop has put out a pedal that can easily compete with those units but, in most cases, costs a great deal less.

I have been playing professionally since 1973 (for eleven and a half years) I then went for an Aerospac Engineering degree, and then planned to go back to Live music, got a job offer that I could not refuse.

Anyhow, I bought this CSP202 to act as an impedance buffer before a KORG SDD-3000, DigiTech Whammy and DigiTech RP-1000, TC Electronic Dark Matter Overdrive, EH Mistress, and Deluxe Big Mu** Pi to the rack with Furman PL-Plus Power Conditioner, Behringer FBQEq, Compressor/Limiter, and a BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer to a 1963 Fender Twin Reverb, and a 1973 Marshall 200W Major (the Pig). Without the CSP202 the rig "Sings" WITH the CS202 the sound goes to "rough, noisy, scratchy, and full of hum". I have turned down the output on the other pedals/rack component to no avail. So what I thought would improve my one trashed it. I have tried it in all the different points in the events chain - same bad results.

The unit is back in the box for a refund from MF. A Custom Shop pedal can not work in everyone set-up, and I'm my case it did not help but hurt my search for better tone.

Excellent Dynacomp like Compressor

By James Moulton

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a compressor that is very versatile or you make it like a dynacomp.
I am a compressor nut, I have owned or tryed most compressors out there and this is right up with the best of them, in fact, I think it is better quality than the Custom Shop 76 reissue which I bought before getting this one, it was real noisey with my rig. Plus this has a LED light, power supply plug, same NOS CA3080 can OTA, plus raf radio interference shieding. If you would read the instructions you could get all of the squash you wanted from this compressor. All you have to do, is open up back turn both trim pots all of the way to the right,CLOCKWISE. They are attack and trim, like the Keeley 4 knob. Do that and you have a fine country dynacomp, that will squash your Chicken.
Excellent quality, 2 knob, white mxr box, red pcb with 2 trimpots that you can turn with your fingers, don't even need a screwdriver.
Not a Keeley or Wampler so I can't give it all tens.

    Holy Comp

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I cannot rave enough about this pedal. I've had/borrowed a few different expensive brand compressors over the years and this really makes all others (at least to me) look like a half step below par. It virtually noiseless, which has been a problem with other older cheaper compressors of mine in the past, and EXTREMELY transparent. I sometimes forget if I have it on or not! But believe me, even if you're happy with your tone after you turn this bad boy on and play a bit, turning it off makes even a good tube amp sound like that first crappy 8" SS amp you had when you first started. The internal trim pots are kind of a pain, but it all honesty after I set them right I never wanted to touch them anyway.

Bottom line, this thing is built very well and a great buy. If you're looking for a ton of squish or the "Nashville sound" this probably isn't the pedal for you, but if you want to set it, turn it on, and forget it, you NEED this pedal.

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Firstly, the 3080 is a rare component, that's why they're $15. Ive gone through about a dozen >$300 compressors; Keeley, Dyna, P.Tone. CA, optical compressors. Features wise, i cant give it a 5 due to the internal trimpots; it really is a pain to have to keep 2 scews in the back for the first week or 2 dialing in, but when you do, it's a swiss army knife of a pedal. It gives your clean arpeggios a pop, clean cut for country picking/sliding, articulation to your OD, and real transparent sustain to distortion. 1 caveat; those who are expecting the Dyna Comp squish w/a lil more transparency, get the '76 RI. This will not give you the amount of limiting that the D.Comp does, but you're not going to get that much squish & still keep your top/bottom end, there's always a trade off. If you can pick up a used Keeley, I'd recomend that, but if you're going to spend more than $40 more, get this, you wont have buyers regret.

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I do a lot of tapping and picking and it would never come out loud enough live. I originally got a clean boost pedal to tackle this issue, but it ended up adding dirt to my tube amp. I ended up liking the tone that the boost pedal gave, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I went to [@] and tried out a few compressor pedals and this one was the most transparent by far. If you set up the output correctly, you can't even tell it's on when you're strumming. It really helps equalize the volume in parts where you need it. The first show I played live, I almost forgot that I got the pedal until I started tapping and it came out really clearly. Definitely worth the money.

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have been trying to find out what has been missing from my sound for at least 10 years now, and actually gave upp for a while. It was compression. Without this pedal, my three multi three thousand dollar rig/guitar sounds like two hundred bucks. If I had to keep only one thing out of my rig to play somewhere, including my guitar, it would have to be this pedal without a doubt. You will need to open up the pedal and turn the two dials up inside, but it is in the instruction booklet. This is the secret to great sound.
        Simple, but does the job.
        Sturdy, MXR quality.
        Worth every penny.

Impressive Pedal but not for my purposes

        By flacmanst

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was attracted to the vintage chip and of course the true bypass, led, and 9v adapter features which are missing from the MXR reissue series like the 76 Vintage Dynacomp. However, when I use a compressor, it's for country. I look for what people refer to as a squished tone, sometimes blended with reverb and/or delay to get a pedal steel-sounding ring and whine. This pedal barely accomplishes that. To be specific, the pedal sounds too clean. Not only is there no noise, but there is also a lot of transparency. It works well to supplement overdrive but does not twang, despite playing around with all of the knob settings. After playing with this for a week or two, I went back to my Boss CS-3.

Nice, translucent, but seems to be a little bit weak in compressing the signal, I have to turn it up a lot to notice much effect. Adds some clarity to my surprise. I have used others and it's still a keeper.

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is my 1st compressor stompbox. It is noisy and muddy. I've been using an 8-yr-old Korg multi-effects pedal..with built-in compression. It's a little noisy, too, but not as much as this box. My bandmate has an old MXR Dyna Comp, quiet as a mouse. I've tried the box after guitar & before amp (VERY NOISY), and before my Korg in the amp effects loop (noisy). I suspect all compressors are noisy. Maybe this one is no worse than others. Way too noisy for the studio...maybe live.

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

MXR stuff is always solid and very durable. My complaint is, the CA3080 chip is NOT RARE. It is a ten to fiften dollar chip you can get anywhere. Yes, different chips can make a difference but to say "rare" is crap. One could easily switch out the IC from the Dyna-Comp.
