Great little yellow box. The two knobs allow for a range of tonal versatility mix that with the control knobs on your guitar and you get everything from a little dirt for jazz and blues to full on crunch for classic rock and hard rock. Maybe not modern metal "scooped" tones but it has plenty of growl.

Keep in mind that it works ok over a clean channel, but if you do that it will still lack a little bite. Put it over a dirty channel and the tones you get out of this thing are incredible. Again not great for more modern metal chugging but for classic rock, heavy rock and lead tones I am very pleased. It doesn't do everything but it does what it is intended to do very well.

It does have some downside, it is very limited with what it can do and can get a little noisy when it is cranked all the way up but you didn't want quiet now did you?

I thought that this pedal would be just what I'd been looking for, but that was not the case. My guitar tech told me not to buy because it was not crunchy enough for the music that I play, and now I know why he said that. Yes, Randy Rhoads played with this, but that was because the Marshalls in that era were lacking distortion and he used this pedal to sort of boost the amp's distortion. So if you need a good distortion for any type of Metal, this one just "don't cut the mustard".

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

First off love Mxr stuff! This pedal is an interesting mix of things, it's not a super high gain distortion but can definitely Crunch for rhythm and scream on leads. It's kinda a combination of a crunchy od & fuzz, it can be alittle trebley but that's what I like about it. Good on it's own as a mild distortion with rasp and bite but alot of people use it as a boost or on an already dirty amp. Definitely something to have in the arsenal. It has been around forever and used by so many great guitarists for a reason.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

Sweet smooth sounding distortion - not over the top. It's unlike most other pedals of its kind in that it's actually somewhere between an overdrive pedal and a distortion pedal, which is perfect for me as it makes a great sister pedal to my DS-1 for tone variety.

      MXR Dist.+ 1983 & 2013 Models Compared

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

This is a comparison between the (1983) Series 2000 model and the current Dunlop Re-release. In 1983 I bought the Dist+ after seeing it in the equipment lists of Alex Lifeson and some guy named Randy Rhoads. Upon hearing this wonderbox, I immediately traded away my previous (Ross) distortion pedal. After only thirty years, one of the pots showed signs of dying and I had to find a replacement. I considered Boss, among others, and read countless reviews. The Series 2000 was a superlative product with dual outputs; #1 was pure wet signal, #2 mixed the wet with dry signal. It had silent switching and was built like a tank. Finding a replacement promised to be a pain. I am grateful to the many reviewers of the Dunlop version who gave me the faith to buy the new model. I had to "daisy chain" the two pedals and swap back and forth to get "my sound" as the knobs on the two pedals are marked differently (Series 2000: Level/Drive, Dunlop: Output/Distortion). My efforts were successful and I marked the positions lest the knobs get bumped/moved. The Dunlop model allows for a higher level of distortion and has more gain than the Series 2000 so I am more than happy with the Dunlop version. Whether it will last thirty years remains to be seen but I wouldn't think twice about buying it again. My style is inspired by the psychedelic rock of the late 1960's and the Dist.+ gives a nice fuzzy Yardbirds sound. If you're looking for a metalhead pedal, this may not be the one for you but hey, if it was good enough for Saint Randy... (Note: Randy also used an MXR 10 Band EQ to thicken the bottom end.)

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

This pedal is really an unique mixture of Overdrive/distortion/fuzz and it is vintage ! That means that sound quality is the same level, or even higher level than fuzz face ! For me its the higher level cause fuzz in this one is very clear, strong, pick responsive. You know many dist pedals function the way, you can not hear clearly different strings when you play chords--its all just messy, blurred, muddy...But this is not the case with this pedal ! I have just show to my friend sound of this holy grail, plugged straight into Bugera V5 and played to him some fast solos and hard rock/metal riffs ! He was so impressed with the sound that his jaws simply dropped out, and dont ask me how much blissful, stoned feeling I have when play really loud but you can still hear EVERY note clear, punchy, warm and singing ! I feel Blessed and blissed with this one !!!

With the distortion knob all the way down, this pedal is a classic overdrive. When you go past 12:00, you're in distortion territory. I also have an OCD on my board, and I can really hear the mids more with the MXR +. It's also more responsive to your pick attack than the OCD. I really like in the neck or middle position of my les paul. Not muddy at all. It can be a mid booster for the OCD too. A keeper.

            Real deal

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

When I lost my original D+ I tried several pedals from the local shops. All worked to create fuzzy grind but all seemed to color my tube amps. If your into high fidelity or a tone freak, this pedal may give a softer, more open distortion that leaves the tube tone intact. If you want chainsaw or heavy metal distortion, this pedal may be a little light for you. I love the lighter touch. I add just a hint of grit and turn the pedal down just below the amp volume. Grinding, singing chords dampened slightly with the distortion on, turn it off for clear loud leads.... WORKS!
Limited widgets and gee gaws, just killer tone.
            Rock solid and dependable
I've used plenty of fuzz during my time. I picked this up to replace an original from the 70s I had trashed. I was really happy to find the cost so close to what I paid 3 decades ago.

Comments about MXR M-104 DISTORTION + Guitar Pedal:

Its a very well built pedal thats stood the test of time and does what its supposed to do very well. It could be a bit more versatile but overall is a great pedal.
This pedal is great for creamy overdrive up to Randy Rhoads style distortion but it doesn't go over the top. I usually use this so I dont wear out tubes too quickly overdriving on my old peavey amp. Its not a modern metal distortion pedal (think heavy chugging, super high gain etc) by any means though.
I own a model from I believe 1980 and it still functions as if it were brand new. I can't speak if quality has changed since then but if not it's absolutely a solid 10.
I between quality and price for a pedal that does what this does this is definitely a solid pick.
