I've noticed that a lot of people are calling this pedal nothing more than a tube screamer clone. I beg to differ. The tube screamer sounds more american in flavor, where this pedal seems more british inspired. I.E., its a plexi in a box. This sweet little pedal gives my rig a third channel as well as a distortion boost for an all out in your face metal tone. I run it through a JCM 2000 DSL, and on the clean channel it gives a very convincing 70's rock tone with the distortion set at 5, output boosted a little and the tone at 3, and diming the distortion gives you the feel of a pushed plexi, not quite into van halen territory. When I run it through the dirty channel, its a dream come true. Thickness and sustain for days, and it decays into a very nice and useable feedback. And thats just with the distortion at 5. Maxing the distortion and the tone really takes off. I would recommend this pedal to anyone looking for "something different" in their tone, someone that doesn't want to be like the rest of the tubescreamer users. It is perfect for that inbetween sound, between overdrive and distortion, and that's one of my favorite ranges to play in. This pedal does not take control of your tone as others do, but complements your current setup. Highly recommended.
I'm not going to give it 5 stars here because I'm sure the extreme tweakers out there want more to play with, but for me the three knob set up is perfect. The best part is that the ranges of the controls are all useable.
I have never owned a mxr pedal that has been of low quality, much less heard of any. this thing is built like a tank.
I'm sure the price could be lower, but the distortion is not grainy, it is pure analog and sounds like it. True bypass is a great addition.

this pedal is good for what it is. i bought it with the intent of using it as a dirty boost. It technically does this, but i'd prefer more dirt. With the "distortion" knob turned all the way up it gave me a tube OD sound.

based on its sound this pedal should technically be called an "overdrive" instead of "distortion".

Its a good pedal, and i'll keep it as its a great quality and its always good to have options as far as the sounds I get from my rig, just beware that "distortion" isn't really an accurate description of it.

Comments about MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal:

I bought my first MXR Distortion lll back in 2008. I instantly fell in love with it's rich, organic and uncompressed tone. It's very uniquely voiced. Sounds alot like a late '70s Marshall JMP. It's definitely not a Tubescreamer clone. Plugged into the clean channel it's great for everything from blues to rock and even early '80s metal. If you're looking for a stand alone unit that delivers more modern metal tones you'll need to look elsewhere.

This pedal really shines while being used as a dirty boost in the crunch or lead channel of your amp. It sounds absolutely fantastic with both humbucker and single coil pickups and works equally well with my Marshall and Fender amps. The Distortion lll creates the ideal lead / distortion tone as a dirty boost. It brings to life that sound you hear in your head like no other.

About four years ago I made a very cool discovery about this pedal - you can run it at 18-volts!

That discovery made a great sounding, amp-like pedal, even more so. I went ahead and purchased a Dunlop 18V adapter for the unit and I've never looked back. I've purchased other overdrives since then by alot of different manufacturers including a couple of much higher priced boutique units. While I had high hopes that I would find something as pleasing, I have to say that all, including the boutiques, fell short of my MXR Distortion lll. I've come to the conclusion that I have no real use for them and will sell them all.

I went ahead and purchased a new D lll through Musicians Friend. It arrived last week. Now I'm covered in case my first is lost or stolen and for some awful reason MXR is no longer making them.

Comments about MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal:

I got this pedal during black friday for a little over a third of the listed price due to a pricing issue that the employees didn't know how to solve. (It was on clearance and had 40% off for black friday. It was supposed to be on one or the other but rang up both.)

I play some pretty dirty sounding blues and dabble in songs with a metal foundation so if you've played this pedal, you know this isn't the one for me. However I have it right next to my RAT distortion pedal and keep the distortion around the 3 o'clock position, which is around 10 o'clock on the rat. It's a good way to build up to my face melting leads.

However buying the RAT was supposed to lead to this leaving my chain, but playing them side by side showed me how unique this really is. It's warm and muddy like its straight from a Joe Bonnamassa CD. It's PERFECT for dual humbucker pickups. It makes muddy blues perfect, then switching to my 80's hairband sounding RAT blows most guitarist friends away.

I'd only replace my "soft distortion pedal" (this pedal) with a Tube Sceamer. However if I start considering that, I will have to do a very intense comparison.

This thing has a couple aspects of tone that sound a little "cheap," but those aspects mixed with the unique sound this pedal produces is very very nice.

All that being said, this pedal isn't for everyone. I was playing music with a metal foundation when I got it and I wasn't happy with the fact that it wasn't good for heavy music at all. Now that I've dug into my own style more I found a use for this and really really like it.

Comments about MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal:

This is my main od/distortion sound. I've been playing for over 30 yrs. and I love this pedal. I play a mahogany guitar w/ humbuckers through a clean tube amp and this gets an awesome 70's hard rock tone. It's a good mid point between overdrive and distortion. But it just has great tone and heaps of volume if you need it. Heavier than a TS9, which I got rid of cuz this pedal has more balls. It can do metal (or close), just not super gain type stuff. It keeps a nice mid crunch

Comments about MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal:

I've been playing all of my life and have very critical ears. I've played most types of rock, pop and blues, everything from 80's Metal to Muddy Waters to 70's Classic Rock, Johhny Winter, etc. These days, I use Fender silver face amps for the clean tone and overdrive pedals for different types of distortion. The MXR Distortion III sounds just about right for most classic rock sounds, which is mostly what I do these days. It IS NOT a tube Screamer clone. This pedal does not sound like a Tube Screamer. In fact, I don't consider a Tube Screamer as being useable anymore. Maybe as a booster pedal, but not on it's own. I needed a pedal that I could use on it's own, almost like adding a channel to my clean amp. The Distortion III does it well, and it's very quiet, too. It makes a Stratocaster sound much bigger than it normally does, but it still sounds like a Strat. That's hard to do. Many big stars are using the Distortion III. Research it. I'm very happy with this pedal.

Comments about MXR M-115 Distortion III Pedal:

I gave this pedal a less-than stellar review when the switch broke after very few uses. Since then Dunlop fixed the switch free of charge even though the warranty had expired. I've tried it again in my pedalboard and I have to agree that this is not just another Tube Screamer clone, though it does that well. It has a sound more like my beloved 1980s MXR Distortion II. Whereas Tube Screamers and their clones seem to favor single coils, this sounds as good with the humbuckers on my Hagstrom Swede as it does my Strats and does rock as well as blues. I'm very happy to have this pedal working again, and I appreciate the customer service I experienced from Dunlop. They've renewed by respect for MXR/Dunlop products.
