OVERVIEW

When you need a little boost.

The MXR M-133 Micro Amplifier Pedal adds a preset amount of gain, using a single control. With a guitar, this lets you boost your signal for lead work, adjust between 2 different guitars with unmatched output (i.e., humbucker to single coils), or it can supply a permanent boost in a long effects chain where signal drop-off is a problem. Power: Single 9-volt battery or Dunlop ECB-003 AC Adapter - Controls: Footswitch toggles amp on/bypass (red LED indicates on) Gain knob adjusts total output volume when the Micro Amp is engaged.

This pedal is great. I was looking for something to boost my overdrive tone when I switch out of rhythm into leads. I use a Boss SD-1 super overdrive pedal for a lot of lead stuff, but I also like it for rhythm- this makes it tricky when I don't want to change my tone necessarily, but I need to boost into a lead riff that can cut through the mix (and jump over a drummer who makes brushes sound like broad-swords.) My other distortion is a ProCo You Dirty Rat, but it's too sustain-y to use as a base tone on most songs and I use it mostly as an accent effect for really heavy fuzz or long sustained bends, etc. I'm playing through a Peavey Express 112 (yeah, I know) so obviously the distortion tone coming from the gain channel is worthless. BUT, the clean tone is pretty decent and I'm broke, which is why I still don't have a Fender twin reverb or similar. Anyway, I was going to buy yet another distortion pedal (m78?) so I could have a base distortion and a lead OD but then I found the M-133 and my problems disappeared. Basically, it makes you louder when you need to be. End of story. Super simple, and good at what it does. But it DOES warm up your tone a bit... I happen to LOVE the subtle, subtle change, but be warned, it is there. I found that running it before my SD-1 gave me the best boost sound for that pedal- just a bit more sparkle, warmth, and fullness without any extra sustain or squeeze- sort of like a compressor without the compression, I guess. Same thing goes for my clean tone and clean with reverb. I did notice that it doesn't do much for my ProcoYDR, but all that fuzz makes it hard to tell.
Basically, I bought it to drive my clean reverby tones and my SD-1 and I couldn't be happier with it.
I give it five stars here because even though it only has one knob, it's pretty versatile! Doesn't change your tone, but it does warm it up just slightly at higher gain, and frankly, it sounds GREAT.
Metal case feels super solid, input/output jacks and the 9V recepticle are all snug. Knob doesn't wiggle.
Well, I got lucky and got mine pretty cheap from a guy who bought it from MF and never used it, but even at the retail price I'd say it's a good deal, because it does it's job well and really isn't that expensive. I'd buy it new again if something happened to mine.

wonderful volume kick and lead pedal

I love how this pedal only has one knob to deal with. It does a great job of representing the original tone or sound while amplifying it, either in clean or distorted modes.
So far, so good.
Not sure what's in the "guts" to warrant the price, but it sure does a great job with it's design intent.

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

I had looked for a unit that I could change from rhythm to lead quickly....After playing in groups for many years---I suddenly found myself as a "solo" act in March 2010 and was desperate--by accident I stumbled onto this unit that solved my problem!! Best addition that I've ever had in a pedal. Smooth change from rhythm, while singing, to doing a guitar solo. I highly recommend this pedal and have advised other to purchase---you can't go wrong for a most economical "problem solver"....if something should happen to mine I would order another ASAP.

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

this has to be one of my favorite effects of all time. want to be a little louder for a solo or an intense part of a song, without having a sound man that knows all your parts, or imagine, no sound man at all? just step on this little guy. I love the simplicity of it as well, makes a three knob boost seem a little overdone. Other clean boosts will give different characters of sound in front of a distortion pedal or distorted amp, or as a level boost, but this MXR unit really shines at "just making it louder" without much of any coloration, which is very often just what I want. It makes a good dirty boost too, in front of a fuzz pedal like the Fingerprint. for me this is an essential effect in most of my gigging rigs.

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

Works fine, wish it had come with an AC Power Adapter. Highly recommend this pedal.
Very simple and easy to use; Ilike that in a pedal.
Seems to be sturdy....only time will tell.
Could have cost a little less because it's just to boost the gain and nothing else.

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

The M-133 is a teriffic gain boost pedal. I've been using mine for years and have had no problems with it. On stage I use it behind my multi-effects processor and it gives me a great boost for lead work or for those riffs that really need to stand out. I also use it when recording to change my gain on the fly. We hired a new guitarist last year that swaps leads with me and I have him using an M-133 now! You could complain about the price but the fact is there's nothing cheaper that works as well and after all isn't it all about the sound? Do you go cheap when you buy your other pedals also or do you buy what you know works? Well this one works great and it's easy to use, you can even change the output with your foot while you're playing just by turning the one knob.

Essential for leads on a great amp

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

If you're like me, you have invested a lot of time, money, and energy into an amplifier that sounds perfect to you without needing any pedals. For me, that was the Marshall Vintage Modern 2466 100-watt head with an Avatar custom G412 cabinet loaded with 2 Celestion Vintage 30's and 2 G12H30's. I love the organic sound of the amp so much that I am extremely hesitant to put any extra interference between my guitar (Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway) and the amp. This pedal is the only pedal I have heard that pushes your amp's tubes to add slightly more gain, and adding some extra decibels for solos, while preserving every aspect of your tone (even while it is bypassed). A lot of people like to use overdrive pedals to achieve the "boost" effect, like the Fulltone OCD. I actually used to use an Analogman TS-808/brown modded pedal on an older, solid-state amp. I now see this as useful only if you are not completely happy with your amp's natural tones. The MXR Micro-Amp is simply like having the "master volume" level shoot up a few notches on your amp by stomping on it, which I use for solos to push my sound out from the rhythm guitar. So, if you are using a solid state or hybrid amp, try using a OCD or TS-9 which emulate an overdriven tube amp...or just use the micro-amp if you actually have an overdriven tube amp!

Comments about MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal:

great pedal, simple, clean boost. had some problems running it in-lone with my pedals. it wouldnt boost my overdrive channel, only my clean.(i had it in the beginning of the chain)i then ran it through the effects loop and it works fine now. From my understanding I have an unorthodox setup, from what they said at the music store. i dont know, but once i ran everything though the loop Ive had no problems. MXR rocks!

Simple design that does exactly what it's supposed to do. Does not change your sound one bit. It acts just like a volume pedal in that it just raises the volume with no distortion at all. Perfect for making your lead stand out. Very solid. Not too big. Nice pedal.

This little pedal is great if you want a clean boost. If your already running a gain pedal and you want a "boost" for your upcoming guitar solo that won't send your guitar into feedback-this is the ticket. This pedal works best at the end of your signal chain right before your delay pedal.A simple one knob circuit yes-but it works.
