I play a Gibson Explorer and Les Paul through a Peavey Transtube XXL 100W 2x12 and run a Vox Tonelab LE through the effects loop. I love the tone, but since switching to this amp I've had the worst feedback. If I'm not playing a note and I'm on the stage, the amp's screaming. Tried an MXR EQ pedal, didn't work (great pedal, just not for this problem). Got this thing and it really does work like magic! In order for it to work I have to switch it to full mode and crank the knob a little past noon, but there's still absolutely no tone loss. My rig sounds as great as ever, just without feedback. Also killed some hissing. Oddly enough, it worked no matter where it was in the signal chain, but it's best in the effects loop. Definitely worth the money, it just works perfectly without killing tone. ALL IT DOES is take out the noise. I don't know how it works and I don't care, it just does! If you have any noise issues at all, this is what you want!

Like it says in other reviews, the manual gives no information on the "hi-trigger" button. The pedal doesn't kill any hiss or hum without it pressed down. The only way to stop hiss and hum is to have the pedal turned all the way up, this setting doesn't even stop all of the hum. Plus it sucks a lot of tone. I've even let friends use it to see if they liked it, and they didn't. I use a lot of gain and I didn't really expect it to cut it all out but I definitely thought that for the money it could at least save my tone. The casing is very nice and sturdy though. Its really disappointing.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I've owned both the Boss Noise Gate and the ISP Decimator, and I like the control/features of the M-135 best. I certaily did the best job in not killing my tone like the Decimator did. The M-135 does not squash noise as well, so it's a compromise. Personally, I would rather put up with a bit of hum vs having something in my signal chain that could totally kill my tone. I use it to bring down the hum from my overdrive pedal; does a perfect job.

Works amazing with a solid state amp, not needed as much with a tube amp. Takes some playing around with but its very simple to use
Definitely a must for my board cause you never know what kind of amp situation your gonna run into

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

This is the one pedal I have that is always on when I'm playing. I found it works best when it's first in my chain (guitar -> noise gate -> effects -> amp -> effects loop -> amp). For the most part, it's a set it and forget it. I can go between my strat/tele/les paul and the tone sounds good without having to tweak it for each setup (took about an hour to dial it in).

It does what it's supposed to - gets rid of any annoying background noise. It does cut into sustain a little, but nothing too bad. If I was to get anything different, it would be the ISP G String - however it's also twice the cost of this unit. For the price, I cant complain.

                  • Live guitar noise issues

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

The smart gate is a well built pedal that does what it's supposed to. I bought it to deal with noise from a single-coil pickup I have in one of my guitars. For this I use the pedal first in my chain on the "full" setting with the trigger knob at just shy of 12:00. This completely eliminates the buzz when I'm not playing, although the gate doesn't shut quite as quickly as I'd like until I adjust the knob to around 1:00, and at that level it can cut in to some of the lighter playing nuances.I wasn't expecting miricles though. Noise/interference issues can change according to the room and where you are so I can always adjust.
With humbuckers I don't really need the pedal at all. What little noise I get goes away with the trigger barely at 9:00.
I've owned the BOSS NS2 and the Decimator pedals previously and the MXR seems to be just as good at what I need it for. I personally don't like BOSS's built quality and the MXR is cheaper than the Decimator so I'd recommend it.

                  A Decent Item

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

For what I paid for I'm happy. It does exactly what the description claims it will do: Feed back reduction. However I still experience feedback, not to the same degree but it happens. Then the SEVERE cut in my tone and sustain is the drawback, the dial seems to have to settings:

                  12-7 o'clock = Feedback central
                  12-5 o'clock = Tone and Sustain death
Features are pretty plain Jane, had to buy the power supply seperately, just the pedal.
Does exactly what it says, however there is a catch. It breakes down tone and sustain A LOT. Quite unfortunate that they didn't mention this in any reviews but It absolutely kills tone.
Decent priced, can't really find MXR pedals around my area so this was the best value for my pocket book.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

When I first got the pedal I was surprised that i pulled on the knob a little bit and it popped right off, it was easy enough to slide back into place, but I would like something that just stays there. aotherwise it's done me good, I got this because I started playing my older guitar for lower tuned stuff and the guitar makes quite a bit of buzzing. It did block out the buzzing as needed, and I'm content with it.

Great Noise Gate For High Gain Amps

                  By RL

                  from Westchester, NY

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I am reviewing this pedal with for a specific function. I am running it through the effects loop of my Marshall DSL50 head. It's a relatively noisy amp on the gain channel so my experience with it may not match yours. Overall, this pedal does what its supposed to do. It cuts out most of the noise and works like a good noise gate should. There are 3 settings but I find that with my noisy amp, I have to use the FULL setting with the trigger level around 2 o'clock. I have an ISP Noise Decimator in front of my amp so this pedal is going through the effects loop to cut out the left over buzz and hiss. The Hiss setting and the MID settings dont really do enough but again, it could be my amp, the tubes, the wiring in my house etc. I dont find that it affects my tone in a negative way but in FULL mode, it does cut off the sustain just a little when I'm on the clean channel. Its a fair trade off to be able to "set and forget it" and to have a noise free amp.
                  Fairly basic
                  MXRs are built like tanks
Does its job for the money

                  Does what it says

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

Great noise gate. Let's you select what you want to target. I use the FULL BAND to target the 60 cycle hum from my single coils. Very quick reaction time, good response. It does color your tone a bit. Takes the edge off the highs ever so slightly. Would never notice this playing with the entire band, but definitely by yourself, and trying to lay down a studio track. I think every noise control device colors your tone, but this one is very very slight so I can live with compromise. I definitely recommend.
Threshhold knob, and selectable frequencies to target. Give it a 9 here because it does not have a loop return.
I think Dunlop stands for quality. This is no exception
Can't put a price on good tone
