So....... Some straight talk on gating and suppression. A noise gate does just that. Gates sound below a certain threshold. A suppressor, or reduction, like Rocktron's Hush is what they call single ended noise suppression. It is my experience that a gate is best used by metal, and high gain guitarists to tighten tone from the guitar to the input of the amp. The MXR is perfect for that. Also if you use an overdrive to condition, and boost your tone you want to place the gate directly after it. To really clean up your amp and get the "djent/metal" tone use a noise suppressor( Boss NS2/ ISP Decimator/ Rocktron HUSH) in the loop. I personally think, and in my experience have noticed that shielding your guitar and using an amp with high quality transformers with a gate in front of the input does the trick. That said, I really like the feel, and reaction of the Smart Gate, Go buy it. Use it in front of your amp, not the loop.

Like it says in other reviews, the manual gives no information on the "hi-trigger" button. The pedal doesn't kill any hiss or hum without it pressed down. The only way to stop hiss and hum is to have the pedal turned all the way up, this setting doesn't even stop all of the hum. Plus it sucks a lot of tone. I've even let friends use it to see if they liked it, and they didn't. I use a lot of gain and I didn't really expect it to cut it all out but I definitely thought that for the money it could at least save my tone. The casing is very nice and sturdy though. Its really disappointing.

I use my M-135 Smart Gate Pedal for recording guitars in my band. It works great and there's no other better pedal out there that I know of. Definitely worth the price.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

The MXR M-135 gets the job done. Its only competition is the Decimator as far as pedals go. I own both. Both do a very good job. The MXR is more compact, has a few more options and a better switch (not a real big fan of the Boss style pedal switching). In the end, if ya got a noisy rig, do yourself a favor and pick one up. A hiss and hum free rig sounds way more professional - your sound guy will thank you (so will your band mates).

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

Awesome! I had so much noise coming from my pedal chain, and it was limiting the way that I used my effects. I could not turn up the distortion or gain pedals to the levels that I wanted because of all of the hissing background noise. Put this at the end of the chain, and now I walk into the practice room and can't even tell that my amp is turned on.

Before the addition of the pedal, my guitar was so "hot" that any finger movement or neck bump was heard. Now, when I stop playing, the signal goes silent. Just what I needed. When set correctly, does not affect the tone at all. Highly recommend if you have a high level of signal noise.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

First off the instructions are not the best for this pedal. But at the same time, 5 minutes with this thing and I can see why they didn't write detailed instructions.

I plugged it in as the first pedal in the chain. So I have the MXR M-135,an MXR ZW-44, volume at 10, tone 50%, gain 0 to about 3 going into a Blackstar HT-5H with the gain at about 90% into a Randall 2x12 loaded with the Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang and Eminence Patriot Texas Heat. So my home rig is pretty loud and noisy.

Prior to the M-135 this thing made more noise than two skeletons fighting on a tin roof. Every time I'd stop playing all you could hear was me trying to not move my hand on the strings unless I kept my pick hand completely still. So I set the gate to full and the Trigger Level to zero with the Hi Trigger Range in the up position and that was it.

I did not try in on the hiss mid yet, but that's not what I bought it for complete silence and that's exactly what I got.

Now the little rubber thing I presume is for the knob, since that's what if fit on, but inless you want to fight with it for about 20 minutes to get it back off, don't mess with it.

To be honest, if I could get one of these for my dog I would! Great pedal for the money and does what it advertises.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I've owned both the Boss Noise Gate and the ISP Decimator, and I like the control/features of the M-135 best. I certaily did the best job in not killing my tone like the Decimator did. The M-135 does not squash noise as well, so it's a compromise. Personally, I would rather put up with a bit of hum vs having something in my signal chain that could totally kill my tone. I use it to bring down the hum from my overdrive pedal; does a perfect job.

Definitely a must for my board cause you never know what kind of amp situation your gonna run into
