So....... Some straight talk on gating and suppression. A noise gate does just that. Gates sound below a certain threshold. A suppressor, or reduction, like Rocktron's Hush is what they call single ended noise suppression. It is my experience that a gate is best used by metal, and high gain guitarists to tighten tone from the guitar to the input of the amp. The MXR is perfect for that. Also if you use an overdrive to condition, and boost your tone you want to place the gate directly after it. To really clean up your amp and get the "djent/metal" tone use a noise suppressor( Boss NS2/ ISP Decimator/ Rocktron HUSH) in the loop. I personally think, and in my experience have noticed that shielding your guitar and using an amp with high quality transformers with a gate in front of the input does the trick. That said, I really like the feel, and reaction of the Smart Gate, Go buy it. Use it in front of your amp, not the loop.

Like it says in other reviews, the manual gives no information on the "hi-trigger" button. The pedal doesn't kill any hiss or hum without it pressed down. The only way to stop hiss and hum is to have the pedal turned all the way up, this setting doesn't even stop all of the hum. Plus it sucks a lot of tone. I've even let friends use it to see if they liked it, and they didn't. I use a lot of gain and I didn't really expect it to cut it all out but I definitely thought that for the money it could at least save my tone. The casing is very nice and sturdy though. Its really disappointing.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I've owned both the Boss Noise Gate and the ISP Decimator, and I like the control/features of the M-135 best. I certaily did the best job in not killing my tone like the Decimator did. The M-135 does not squash noise as well, so it's a compromise. Personally, I would rather put up with a bit of hum vs having something in my signal chain that could totally kill my tone. I use it to bring down the hum from my overdrive pedal; does a perfect job.

    Silent Feedback Killer

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I play a Gibson Explorer and Les Paul through a Peavey Transtube XXL 100W 2x12 and run a Vox Tonelab LE through the effects loop. I love the tone, but since switching to this amp I've had the worst feedback. If I'm not playing a note and I'm on the stage, the amp's screaming. Tried an MXR EQ pedal, didn't work (great pedal, just not for this problem). Got this thing and it really does work like magic! In order for it to work I have to switch it to full mode and crank the knob a little past noon, but there's still absolutely no tone loss. My rig sounds as great as ever, just without feedback. Also killed some hissing. Oddly enough, it worked no matter where it was in the signal chain, but it's best in the effects loop. Definitely worth the money, it just works perfectly without killing tone. ALL IT DOES is take out the noise. I don't know how it works and I don't care, it just does! If you have any noise issues at all, this is what you want!

    AWESOME!!!!!

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

please people, research your stuff before you buy. From what i hear and have seen you have 2 types of players; you have some that like to crank distortion pedals and you have kinds that like to just run with the distortion on tap from the amp. That being said, you have to RESEARCH for YOUR specific needs, and this one is mine! If you run distortion AFTER the amp (OD pedals, distortion pedals etc) then go with the BOSS NS-2. You get all the gain and nothing else. If you run it like i do and just use the amp distortion(running a 5150...LOVE IT!!)then this is what you need! it shuts up JUST AFTER you stop playing, as its made to. VERY VERY nice pedal! should've got it years ago.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

Great noise gate. Let's you select what you want to target. I use the FULL BAND to target the 60 cycle hum from my single coils. Very quick reaction time, good response. It does color your tone a bit. Takes the edge off the highs ever so slightly. Would never notice this playing with the entire band, but definitely by yourself, and trying to lay down a studio track. I think every noise control device colors your tone, but this one is very very slight so I can live with compromise. I definitely recommend.
Threshhold knob, and selectable frequencies to target. Give it a 9 here because it does not have a loop return.
I think Dunlop stands for quality. This is no exception
Can't put a price on good tone

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

First off the instructions are not the best for this pedal. But at the same time, 5 minutes with this thing and I can see why they didn't write detailed instructions.

I plugged it in as the first pedal in the chain. So I have the MXR M-135,an MXR ZW-44, volume at 10, tone 50%, gain 0 to about 3 going into a Blackstar HT-5H with the gain at about 90% into a Randall 2x12 loaded with the Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang and Eminence Patriot Texas Heat. So my home rig is pretty loud and noisy.

Prior to the M-135 this thing made more noise than two skeletons fighting on a tin roof. Every time I'd stop playing all you could hear was me trying to not move my hand on the strings unless I kept my pick hand completely still. So I set the gate to full and the Trigger Level to zero with the Hi Trigger Range in the up position and that was it.

I did not try in on the hiss mid yet, but that's not what I bought it for complete silence and that's exactly what I got.

Now the little rubber thing I presume is for the knob, since that's what if fit on, but inless you want to fight with it for about 20 minutes to get it back off, don't mess with it.

To be honest, if I could get one of these for my dog I would! Great pedal for the money and does what it advertises.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

The smart gate is a well built pedal that does what it's supposed to. I bought it to deal with noise from a single-coil pickup I have in one of my guitars. For this I use the pedal first in my chain on the "full" setting with the trigger knob at just shy of 12:00. This completely eliminates the buzz when I'm not playing, although the gate doesn't shut quite as quickly as I'd like until I adjust the knob to around 1:00, and at that level it can cut in to some of the lighter playing nuances.I wasn't expecting miricles though. Noise/interference issues can change according to the room and where you are so I can always adjust.
With humbuckers I don't really need the pedal at all. What little noise I get goes away with the trigger barely at 9:00.
I've owned the BOSS NS2 and the Decimator pedals previously and the MXR seems to be just as good at what I need it for. I personally don't like BOSS's built quality and the MXR is cheaper than the Decimator so I'd recommend it.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

Awesome! I had so much noise coming from my pedal chain, and it was limiting the way that I used my effects. I could not turn up the distortion or gain pedals to the levels that I wanted because of all of the hissing background noise. Put this at the end of the chain, and now I walk into the practice room and can't even tell that my amp is turned on.

Before the addition of the pedal, my guitar was so "hot" that any finger movement or neck bump was heard. Now, when I stop playing, the signal goes silent. Just what I needed. When set correctly, does not affect the tone at all. Highly recommend if you have a high level of signal noise.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I just received my MXR Smart Gate today and getting it dialed in was faster than placing the power supply cable and the in and out cables in place. Wow!! I am running it at the end of my effects loop and it does what it says it does. And I DO NOT lose tone! My rig is a Carvin SX 200 and I have an EQ, chorus, flanger, Bad Horsie and an original Rat 2 for boost. Plus, I am using single coil pickups. Talk about a noise factory. But, the gate takes care of it without ANY loss of signal or tone. I really like the way it decays the noise while the not decays. It doesn't cut out when sustaining a note and the blue light is cooler on the eyes. Not sure why some can't get it to work. But I am impressed! Two thumbs up MXR!

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I had purchased this pedal to use in tandem with the compressor pedal as I had heard they were noisey but did not find the Dyna Comp compressor to create alot of noise BUT this noise gate is very valuable to filter out single coil hiss and the noise created from my EQ pedal. I use this very spareingly with light settings with placement toward the end of my chain after my EQ but before my delay and reverb as to not "gate" those effects off and allow natural decay. I set the gate to hiss setting and only at the 9:00 position. If you have lots of noise you can set this very high if needed but I found at high settings it just basically killed everything on the board so take a few min one day then the next to dial up just the right filter. Easy to use with good instructions with it or download a sheet from the internet. I can switch the gate off with it being true bypass and it does not kill any tone/volume in bypass but for use with certain guitars like noisy single coils or noisey pedals its almost a must. Just one knob with basically high, med, low switch settings plus a light to tell you when it is actually "gating" easy with instructions. It has small footprint for that valuable pedalboard space and low key paint job I prefer for that classic look. Not too bad on the pocketbook either.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

This is the one pedal I have that is always on when I'm playing. I found it works best when it's first in my chain (guitar -> noise gate -> effects -> amp -> effects loop -> amp). For the most part, it's a set it and forget it. I can go between my strat/tele/les paul and the tone sounds good without having to tweak it for each setup (took about an hour to dial it in).

It does what it's supposed to - gets rid of any annoying background noise. It does cut into sustain a little, but nothing too bad. If I was to get anything different, it would be the ISP G String - however it's also twice the cost of this unit. For the price, I cant complain.

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:

I am reviewing this pedal with for a specific function. I am running it through the effects loop of my Marshall DSL50 head. It's a relatively noisy amp on the gain channel so my experience with it may not match yours. Overall, this pedal does what its supposed to do. It cuts out most of the noise and works like a good noise gate should. There are 3 settings but I find that with my noisy amp, I have to use the FULL setting with the trigger level around 2 o'clock. I have an ISP Noise Decimator in front of my amp so this pedal is going through the effects loop to cut out the left over buzz and hiss. The Hiss setting and the MID settings dont really do enough but again, it could be my amp, the tubes, the wiring in my house etc. I dont find that it affects my tone in a negative way but in FULL mode, it does cut off the sustain just a little when I'm on the clean channel. Its a fair trade off to be able to "set and forget it" and to have a noise free amp.

The MXR M-135 gets the job done. Its only competition is the Decimator as far as pedals go. I own both. Both do a very good job. The MXR is more compact, has a few more options and a better switch (not a real big fan of the Boss style pedal switching). In the end, if ya got a noisy rig, do yourself a favor and pick one up. A hiss and hum free rig sounds way more professional - your sound guy will thank you (so will your band mates).

Comments about MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal:
