If you're familier with the envelope filter effect and want to add it to your chain this may be the unit for you. Considering the price, tweakability and features of the MXR Auto Q, I think you can hardly go wrong with this one. All of the controls on this work nicely to tailor the effect to your own personal tastes and the added "Shimmer" feature is one of the reasons I choose this one. It's unique and and sounds great in the 3 O'clock range. The amount of the effect can be dialed in using the Blend control rather than being strictly on or off. Nicely engineered. As mentioned by others, this thing is built like a tank, but being a stompbox it should be. I use a powered pedalboard but the standard 9V options apply. The bypass (at least on mine) works well with no leakage or noticable tone alterations. The footswich on the effect is pretty stiff though and requires a solid stomp to engage, so if your bedroom jamming in your bare feet...This is a rock-solid effect. Considering the features and sounds you can get out of this at this price, it's a bargain. It WILL take some tweaking to find the sound you want but is definantly worth the effort.Get one and get the funk on.

As a bass player who desired spots of auto wah during some songs and solos I found the MXR-188 to be a top candidate as a sister pedal to the 180 di+. However, I was greatly disappointed when I learned that while in-line but turned off the wah effect still leaks through. Causing a slight but distracting undertone of wah through out all my playing. Other members of the band definitely noticed and make comments. So, I sent the pedal back to MXR (Dunlop Mfg.) for repair off the bypass circuit. Dunlop support informed me that they found nothing wrong with the bypass and sent it directly back. I tested it several ways and still found the same problem. I sent it back once again and Dunlop came to the same conclusion. "Nothing wrong with the bypass". As we as musicians strive for the best sound possible, I feel it's important for manufactures to take proper responsibility for absolute bypass. Any in-line interference can cancel all our efforts to refine and innovate the shape and feel of our developed sounds.

    Nice pedal

    By Dr Groove

    from Corvallis, OR

I am a bassist with 40+ years of experience. I generally don't like effects. I have sent most of them back or thrown them away so I am pretty cynical about them. I hate it when they mess with my natural tone. This is a pretty good/functional pedal and I will keep it. Controls are straight forward and actually do something. I don't think that it is "true-bypass" but it does not alter natural tone to any level that I can perceive. That is the best part of this review. Otherwise it does what it is supposed to. Even the shimmer thing adds a little bit of fun.

Great box, but I prefer the BOSS AW-3

    By JakoCLE

    from Cleveland, OH

I posted a review of the BOSS AW-3 (the pedal I kept) because I had done a side-by-side analysis of the two and found I liked the BOSS better. However, everyone's tastes are different, so this box is worth trying. Built like a tank. Costs more than the BOSS pedal and doesn't have the variations in sounds nor the same quality of sound in my opinion. The 6 knobs are spaced nicely and easy to access, but not entirely what I wanted. Had I not had the comparison, I would have kept this pedal.

The MXR Bass Auto Q is a great pedal for that super funky bootsy style bass playing. Hook up an Electro Harmonix Bass Balls for killer tones and effects mixed with the shimmer effect

    MXR M-188 BASS AUTO Q

    By tdub

    from Elsewhere

This pedal is the best wah pedal you can buy for the money hands down. The quality of its sound is amazing and it is built like a bullet proof tank. Every pedal on the planet should be made like MXR makes theirs. Does not lack anything period alright you gotta buy a power supply but thats it.

GET ONE, it blows the others away !

    By bestsaxon

Tried a couple of other brands, but this was WAAAY better. Strong, compact, controls easy to see on dark stage, wonderous effects, and a real solid boost to my sound. Use it all the time and would buy another.

Works good but, try and turn it off

    Steller Pedal

    By Zak Timmons

    from Grayling, MI

I got this pedal and instantly started tearing into it. First off, this thing is a TANK. You could run it over and it would still be fine. Second, it didn't come with an instruction manual, but the controls are suprisingly easy to get a hang of. Here's a tip: turn up the Rate all the way and turn down the Q, and you can mock a flange pretty accurately. Other than that, I threw every funk line I had at this beast, and it spat them all out funkier. Definately a great buy, and I'm a tough guy to please.

I've had one of these for quite awhile

    By Mark Olson

    from Houghton, MI

and I used to use it a lot. It isn't actually an auto wah, what it does is act like a wah pedal being rocked back and forth at a rate determined by one of the six potentiometers. Gives a good funky sound. I don't use it much anymore because I prefer auto wah (Mu Tron III) and expression wah (Dunlop 105Q), but this pedal does have its own possiblities. If you're looking for your first wah effect, try the 105Q, but if you've used a few different wah effects and want something that works differently, this is a good one to try.
