Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

Here's what my quest has been about: Finding a tremolo that can hold its own against the bias tremolo effect in old amps.

It would seem that that's an easy goal to fulfill. But I have been using many, many pedals over the years, and eventually got tired of all of them. I recently spent more than a person should on a tube driven tremolo made by VOX. While that pedal has some great features (the ability to ramp up and down gradually between fast and slow effects, amongst others) the sound was just not QUITE right, despite the tube.

Yesterday, I finally A-B'd about 10 different pedals at a music store. The Fulltone Supa Trem and the MXR ended up in the final round, and the MXR won.

They both are fantastic sound-wise, and I preferred the Supa in terms of design and controls. But the MXR makes the sounds I need very easy to dial in, and it simply has NO BAD settings.

I haven't even tested the stereo capabilities yet, and probably won't use them in earnest. But this is the bouncy, soulful, warm, deep, classic tremolo sound that just adds oodles of attitude to your playing. It also has that magic ability to stay out of the way when you throw some single note lines into the middle of strumming.

Elvis Costello once said that the tremolo effect is the mediocre guitarist's best friend, and if rootsy, bluesy, swampy, Americana-y sounds are your wheelhouse, the MXR will make you feel, and sound, a lot better than mediocre.

This is a must have piece on the pedal board with the best voicing in the market for a tremelo. It is built like a tank and is worth every cent.

      Awesome Pedal

      By William Carleton

Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is an awesome pedal. It does what is says. If you are looking for a basic tremolo, I'm sure you can find a cheaper one. In fact I mean to get a plain tremolo myself eventually. What I use this pedal for is the pan effect, running stereo into two identical amps. With the depth, speed and shape controls, you create a leslie effect without 600lbs of cabinet. This pedal can be switched from pan/plain tremolo effect/off at any time. NOTE: This pedal is 18v and takes two 9v batteries to operate correctly. My 9v onespot does seem to power it sufficiently to work, though I'd like to get a 18v power supply. Also I preferred to run mono into the pedal, when I tried to run a Boss stereo chorus into it I liked one plug going into the tremolo/pan instead of two for some reason(could be a 9v-18v variable noted earlier), but nothing that would make me change my mind about the pedal. Solid construction, nice chrome knobs. There are two LED's on it. The left is for the effect on/off, and the right, when in tremolo, stays green and blinks to the rate of the effect. When in Pan, the right LED blinks red to green, at the rate of the effect, to let you know you are in Pan mode.
Seems like it could be slightly cheaper.

      TrEmOloOoOoOo

      By Anonymous

Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

The M159 Stereo Tremolo has a lot to offer if you're looking for a decent tremolo pedal. Sure, tremolo, in essence, may be a very basic kind of effect in that it just cuts volume. But I think when you start messing around with the various parameters of that volume-cutting, you'll find that there's a lot more to it than you might have realized. This pedal offers just about all of the necessary features for tremolo: depth, rate, and a wave-shape option that ranges from sharp and square to smooth and sinusoidal. This last wave-shape option is what sold me, because I like to use tremolo in a slow and shallow way that compliments my delay and chorus effects. And even though I don't believe it has a true triangle-shape option, I don't really miss it much, though some people might. It also has a very nice panning feature that takes advantage of the stereo outputs, which you don't find all that often. Overall, very nice and sturdy pedal, albeit a little bigger than I think it really needs to be. It may also seem pricey for some looking for a tremolo pedal, but I think its unique features justifies the purchase. Very nIcEeEeEeEe!

      More than I expected.

Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've always wanted the classic tremolo sounds as heard in the old Fender amps, so after some looking around I decided on the MXR M159 Tremolo. I paired this up with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe/Les Paul and was quite impressed. It is smaller than it's previous version which is a big plus. As for sound, the tremolo sounds can go from smooth and subtle to quick and choppy. The pedal is very quiet and to my ears doesn't alter the tone at all...just clean, natural sounding volume swells of your original tone. Dialing in that Creedance "Midnight Special" sound is a breeze. This pedal also works very well with my bass setup.Where this pedal really shines is it's ability to pan your signal back and forth between two amps. I set up my Fender along with another solid state amp and was amazed at the 3 dimensional sounds produced in the room. Place the amps in different parts of the room for that classic stereo shifting sound...run some reverb (if your amp has it) for even more spaciousness. Place them together and turn one amp 180 degrees for a natural sounding phase effect (very similar to a Leslie). All this with out altering your tone one bit...the additional effects are all coming from the acoustics of the room you're in. Of course this takes a little bit of experimentation with placement...but it's worth it.Overall I'm very happy with it. Yeah...it's a bit pricey, but I think it's a solid sounding unit all the way around...plus MXR builds tough pedals that will last. Also, plan on using an adapter...this thing takes two, count em, TWO...9 volt batteries.

      Warm

Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is warm analog tremolo. Its smooth, cold (in a good way), not overbearing unless you turn everything up. Its built like a tank. The 18 volt operation ensures ultra quite tones. This pedal paired up with the MXR Stereo Chorus and Flanger is great. Waht else could you need. I get everything from vintage stereo or mono tremolo tones to chopped up helicopter effects. They all sound very very analog, not digital fizz and crackle.

      Excellent all around

Comments about MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects Pedal:

The MXR Tremolo has got to be the best tremolo all around. Nice analog feel with nice and warm tone. I typically use the pedal as a subtle effect which it handles very well but you can go all the way to the extremes with this one without sounding completely fake. If you are in the market for a tremolo - go with MXR.
