MXR

Analog pedal with time-tested tone and flexible settings in an amazingly compact package.

The MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal features a completely analog audio path for the ultimate in rich, warm delay--made possible only by old-school bucket brigade technology. This design boasts an amazing 600ms of delay time with optional modulation via a top-mounted switch and a simple, three-knob layout that controls Delay time, Mix (dry/wet blend), and Regen (delay repeats)--all in a pedal no bigger than a Phase 90. In addition, the M169 pedal has two internal trim pots that offer user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation for even more tonal options. The Carbon Copy effect pedal will take you from crisp "bathroom" slap echoes to epic, Gilmour-esque delays with a twist of a knob. True hard-wire bypass, single 9-volt operation, and stage-ready blue LEDs round out the package.

Right around the time that this pedal first came out, I heard a local guitarist using it at a show. We started talking about it and from what I heard, it was enough to convince me that I had to try it. I've messed around with several Digital Delays over the years and the sound of the Analog Delay just won me over immediately. Once this pedal made it onto my board, it's never came off, except to re-position it. I even went to the store with my guitar and tried out the Carbon Copy against all the other Analog Delays that the store had available. This thing still won me over.

I play a variety of Strats through a Tweed Fender Bassman. I'm not huge on using a lot of effects to alter my sound. I enjoy playing with a clean or slightly overdriven tone with the use of some pedals to color my tone slightly. The only drawback I see from the Carbon Copy is it not having the option of reverse delay, which can be a very useful effect from time to time, especially in solos.

This pedal is extremely easy to use, very reliable, and affordable. The modulation button is an awesome function that, with the proper adjustments, adds much more depth to the overall sound.
The only reason this doesn't get a full 10 is because to me a full 10 rating on a delay would be for one that included reverse delay. There are 2 tweakable adjustments on the inside of the pedal for the modulation button. Might be a bad thing to some that it's necessary to open the pedal to make these adjustments but I'm sure for most players it won't be a problem. The 2 adjustments are more of a set and forget feature however they are extremely useful!
MXR builds great pedals that last and take a beating.
Compared to the higher price of some other pedals, especially Analog, the Carbon Copy holds it's own with a lot of delay pedals out there. Even though there are more expensive Delay pedals that sound better, there are also quite a few that are more than double the price that don't touch this one in terms of sound quality.

Okay, bought this in summer '08 when the second run came out and it was backordered. Was looking forward to this affordable analog delay as my first. Previously I used a Boss DD-6 with high cut mod. This is a decent delay pedal. I thought there could be more range in the mix knob. Mine was hard to dial in the right amount. Never used above 9 or 10 O'clock when soloing over something. Mod button didn't do much. It was true bypass and passed signal with no power. I may or may not have still been using this if it hadn't died. After 2 or 3 months I think, it stopped passing signal when engaged. I had registered it, so I sent it back with paperwork. I had it back in 3 weeks. They repaired it and I had to pay shipping to Dunlop. If it's helpful to anyone troubleshooting theirs, Dunlop said "replaced Q10 transistor". It seemed to sound better when I got it back, maybe they adjusted it. I don't remember if there are trimpots besides the mod trim. Maybe just my imagination. Anyways, it probably would have been fine, but I decided to sell it because I didn't trust it. I now have a real nice analog delay I built myself. It sounds better than the MXR. The M169 may be a good pedal for the price, but I'd buy it new and fill out the warranty card. I also wouldn't discourage anyone from getting a digital delay. There are probably as good if not better deals out there among the many delays available. Haven't tried it but like the BBE two timer. Maybe boss DD-7. Shop around.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

A great sounding delay in a compact easy to use box that's built to last. The mod button adds modulation to the repeats for a convincing warm tape delay tone. Modulation amount is adjustable via an internal trim pot. It's quick and easy to dial in a great tone. This is one of those must have effects on your pedal board. The price is very reasonable considering it's great tone and features. I would not be without one.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

Absolutely fantastic. It's an analog pedal, so everything about it is smooth and creamy. If you're looking for something that lets you sit down and set a specific bpm with a "dotted eighth note repeat" or a tap-tempo, then this isn't the pedal for you. But if you're looking for a warm, smooth delay that can do everything from a soft reverb to a sweeping U2's The Edge sound, this pedal is perfect!

I play mainly worship music, and for the modern styles of Elevation Worship, Jesus Culture, and Hillsong, this thing shines. It's worth the extra 20 or 30 that you spend above most competitor's pedals. They aren't nearly as well-made or as clear, and the Carbon Copy can definitely go toe-to-toe with the more expensive boutique pedals out there. Well done MXR!

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased to replace a TC Electronics Hall of Fame w/Tone Print reverb pedal that I was not completely satisfied with. I like the simplicity and the tone of the Carbon Copy much better. I still get the annoying "click" through the amp from the bypass switch but I know now that it's not the stomp box that's the problem.

Obviously, this pedal is rad. But what everyone fails to mention is that the dang knobs glow in the dark. Oh my god. How could you not mention that in the ad? It's amazing. Buy it. Sell your other (non glow in the dark) pedals and buy this one.

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play a lot through a Princeton Reverb and I prefer single coils. I like to keep things fairly simple so I tend to limit pedal use. The 2 pedals my ears insist on are a mild boost pedal to help fatten those single coils at times and a delay pedal. The MXR Carbon Copy has a very nice warm range of delay effects available.(Gotta have a lil slapback). For the sound(s) I'm after, it's IT. I highly recommend it, but I won't "loan it...to anyone".

Comments about MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay Guitar Effects Pedal:

This thing is the shiiiiiiz! I got it when I was still new to using pedals and now it's one of my favorites. The analog delay isn't crisp and pristine like most digital pedals are, such as the BOSS DD series, but I personally like the warm sort of fuzzy tone it adds. Don't get confused though, The sound quality is immaculate. Playing reggae chords with the Delay Time at about 11 o' clock and the Regen at about 9:30/10 sounds ghostly, to put it accurately. With a phase 90 (also MXR) anything you play will be Epic, Righteous, and True. This is a great pedal, worth every penny.

It's quiet, versatile, built like a tank. Dark green paint job is awesome too. Completely satisfied as it does what it's designed to do, quietly, and very well.
