The MXR Prime distortion. I was lured in my Dunlop's always satisfying James videos. And at the price I got it, why not?! I feverishly GAS'd and ordered on the release day of 5/22. My initial feeling upon plugging in was letdown. It didn't give me the golden tones of James and his tele (I play tele exclusively). Nor did it fill the hole in my heart. Being accustomed to the OD awesomeness that is Fulltone OCD and a Mesa Dual, I have dirt tones-a-plenty. But upon second try, I rolled down the gain and quickly got Gibbons. Hold up. Cranking the gain a bit more, I got an ever so slighty compressed, tight response that is perfect for some of my aggressive stuff. Ok, we're doing good!

The magic of this pedal is keeping the gain set high and adjusting the guitar's volume. I've never gotten some much great tonal variation from that knob. The Prime seems to have a great balance of EQ in various positions, but given I play a tele, anything past noon is molten icepicks. Good band name. MXR and GC made something very viable here. Great tones and both volume and touch response, this pedal is a clear winner. The note articulation is amazing. I'm not a cork sniffer by any means, but I do love the MXR standard and have not been let down yet. I think at this price point, these are set to sell and will become as ubiquitous as some other orange, green, and white dirt boxes. Well done.

Disclaimer: I did not buy this pedal.

I saw this advertised today on MF and loved the demo videos so much I had to run out to my local Guitar Center on my lunch break to try one out (Guitar Center and MF are sister companies, and this pedal appears to be exclusive to them). Good price, good pedigree, good demos.

But I was disappointed with the particular pedal I tried. Every pedal has the potential to be a bit of a wild card, and I may have gotten a bad one. But on this one the gain felt like an "8" even at the absolute lowest setting, with a tone I would describe as laser-y even with the tone knob rolled back to 9 o'clock--no response, no dynamics. I played a Strat through a Fender tweed.

Now clearly the players in the demo videos are getting a great sound out the pedal, so for the bargain price, there's a good chance you'll find some kind of pairing and setting that works for you. But the sound I got is not what I expected based on the demos, and certainly not one I personally wanted to spend money on.

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Is was looking for a pedal that would give me 'controlled' distortion, not just noise. The MXR delivers that sound. It is better than my old fender distortion pedal. The battery case is the only concern if that is a issue. After connecting the battery, the case at first seems a little small for the battery. However, I see the need for the tight chamber...NO raddle!

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Read reviews and was concerned about using this with my solid-state Fender 25R amp and Ragin Cajun speaker , was pleasantly surprised when I tried the MXR M69, great sustain and tone, The only drawback I've noticed is some clipping occasionally between songs, could be a result of combining the M69 with a chorus pedal and jamman solo xt! Looking forward to trying the M69 with my vintage Peavey MX tube amp. Great classic distortion pedal! Very happy at a good price. Many reviews say this pedal doesn't work well with a tubeless amp, try it with your own set-up before making up your mind.

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The pedal is one if the best distortion pedals made by one of the best pedal makers. It has a very harmonically rich sound that warms up beautifully on the low end of the tone. The high trebly part of the tone spectrum is pleasantly high without losing tonal character or becoming shrill. Turning on the "crunch" button takes away some of tonal transparent qualities of the pedal and replaces it with a bit of a boost (not too much) and adds a lot of tonal color. This pedal sounds great with humbuckers and single-coils alike. For me, the pedal sounds especially well with the tone at 10 o'clock with a maple neck, alder body strat. It brings out a beautiful warm "woody" character. The distortion turned all the way up is very very smooth without "flattening" or squashing the tone. The construction of the pedal is solid. It's a nice looking pedal too. I have owned and played several distortion pedals over the years and this one is one of the best and is a really great value for the money!!

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal for a cheap, analog distortion pedal, It works great and sounds good on a tube amp, however it can be weak with a solid-state. It is also not good for low distortion and is not very versatile. Another minor complaint is that it is not easy to replace the battery and it can be a pain. Despite its flaws, it gets the job done and has good value.

I replaced my DS-1 with this pedal and I am happy I did. It has more tone and warmed than the DS-1. When I rate something I always consider the price paid for it. For the price you can not go wrong.

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm a big fan of inexpensive distortion pedals. I've owned quite a few Boss distortions, as well as Digitechs, Behringers, Danelectros, and Joyos. This little brown box is a real gem in its price range. It sounds sort of like a modded Boss DS-1, only even better. It reacts very well to playing dynamics and delivers a natural amp-like tone, even through a solid-state setup. It seems to be well constructed and durable. I think it just might be my new favorite distortion.

Comments about MXR M69 Prime Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I prefer a tube amp with natural distortion from the amps gain. Most distortions and overdrives sound tinny and digital to me, but I am impressed with the warm tone and responsiveness of this pedal. I use an overdrive for a clean boost and ad the Prime Distortion to get the crunch. Definitely a keeper. The footswitch button has a pretty loud click when recording with a mic this can be annoying, but great for live performance.
