To keep this as quick as possible... It's a very transparent pedal. I prefer to not use pedals that color natural amp tone too much. I've learned to use the dirt channel, post almost maxed out pre set to my desired volume level which is usually enough for a very slight natural break up. This way it drives my power tubes harder making a warmer wet signal. Tons of EQ possibilities and can definitely gets in the TS territory as well as keeping the gain down using it as a boost for accent other dirt pedals or just push the amp for a lead tone. I've had two of these now selling my first one and with regret recently bought another. Take the time to tweak both the pedal AND your amp to figure out what works for you. If you're thinking about a TS but want more versatility give this a try. You'll dig it!

I use a FNDR strat HSS into a PV Delta Blues 115 (5751s in the preamp section and a 12ax7 as the P.I. )

I recently purchased an MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive and really liked the tone but was extremely disappointed in the quality of the pedal. In regard to the tone it was close to the sounds I get from my MXR distortion II. The tone functions like the filter on the MXR II and the 100hz cut resembles the resonance. I am not sure if that was the intent but the color of the label on the box and the instruction manual are very close to the color of the MXR Distortion II. Overall when the pedal worked I was very satisfied with the tone and transparency. The problem I had was the that the LED for the footswitch and the bump no longer worked after 10 minutes or so of play. This still occured with a change in the battery and using DC connection. The tone of the pedal also changed once the LED was no longer working. In fact it sounded like a pedal with a low battery. Since I liked the pedal I exchanged the pedal for another MXR M77 and had the same problem with the second. Unfortunately a nice pedal with great tone but not the quality I would have expected from MXR.
It would be a better value if it worked

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have had this overdrive for close to 2 years now, and I have to say that I purchased and used quite a few different dirt pedals in that time but this is the only one that I consistently turn to for just about everything, It works great as a boost for leads and thickens up my rhythm perfectly. I use it with a Telecaster and a Les Paul with a Tubemeister 36 and also into a Podhd 500. With either setup I have been able to get great sound with a little bit of adjusting. The 100hz knob gives it the ability to go to almost any overdrive sound I could want. Its solidly build and is an excellent looking pedal to top it all off.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

My earlier review of this pedal was negative, and was probably a result of two factors: the fact that TS type pedals with their pronounced mid-hump are not my favorite kind of sound, and that I had to do a lot of tweaking to get a useable sound out of it. But to be fair, it does have useable sounds and if you're into the TS sound, this is definitely a good and versatile choice. The key is the 100 hz knob, which can turn an anemic and nasal sound into a pretty nice tubelike breakup. The bump switch is useful to go from rhythm to lead sounds, but the button (instead of footswitch) choice by MXR is curious - it's not the most useable in a live setting to go from rhythm to lead lines. My advice is spend time with the knobs. Also, like most OD pedals, it likes at least a little breakup from the amp. Overall a solid product from MXR.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Honestly, I don't understand the hype. I've played this through two tube amps, a 15-watt Laney LC15 in my living room and a 40-watt Fender BDRI in band rehearsals and at gigs, and in each situation it has been unpleasantly nasal and unconvincing as an "amp-like" overdrive. My Earthquaker Devices Speaker Cranker, which costs about the same new, sounds almost identical to a cranked tube amp. The MXR sounds like an imitation, and not a very good one. There are some fantastic overdrives out there, many by boutique companies, that cost about the same or a little more. I would recommend Earthquaker Devices or Catalinbread. By the way, I'm no pedal snob. I love my EHX LBM and Germanium OD, and also my MXR Dyna Comp.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal was exactly what i was looking for. I've owned/tried the following pedals, and they were all not what I was looking for: TS-9 (although the TS9DX was pretty useable in my setup). ZW-44 (great pedal, but wasn't what I wanted. perfect for a solo or more saturation with no color). Green Screamer (have been using until the M77 was purchased). Green Rhino (I wrote a review on that). RAT2 (good pedal, isn't what I needed for current setup - "yes" I know it's a distortion pedal). Pork Loin (not bad, just overkill for me). Blues Driver (tinny).

So what was i looking for? I was looking for an OD pedal that doesn't color your tone too much, but also doesn't rob the low end, as almost ALL overdrive pedals do. I gave the Green Rhino a run before the M77 as it was readily available, but the gain on it was a bit too Class A or farty sounding for me. It was very clippy as the gain went up. Anyway, the M77 so far has been great, as most MXR pedals are. There aren't too many parameters to mess with, and dialing in a great tone didn't take long. I have a single channel amp, so it takes pedals much differently than an amp with a clean channel. This pedal doesn't change your tone at all, unless you use the Bump button, in which case it adds a real nice typical tube screamer hump (although not overdone). It has plenty of output, which actually fell short on my Green Screamer, and ZW44. They had to be dimed to match the volume when deactive/active. The range of the Tone knob is also very apparent. With the previously two mentioned pedals, the tone only changed subtly when turning.

My BIGGEST concern and issue I was having, is that all the OD pedals I was using robbed my low end. While deactivated, my amp has a good low resonance. When activating pedals, because of the nature of them, the low got masked, and it was enough to annoy me. With the 100hz knob, it's easy to compensate missing resonance, so that you can have a seamless transition when the pedal is on or off. The pedal also looks awesome. I liked having the green before, but the gold is kind of new and refreshing. Overall, I think MXR really nailed it with this one. It's as if the tech's all ran into the same issues as me. Thank you MXR. If this one didn't work, I didn't know what I was gonna do!

When I Plugged this pedal In I quit using my Tube Screamer which I had been using since I was 15! I was completly blown away with this pedal. What more could you ask for 100Hz cut or boost and an alternate EQ button.... This in my opinion sounded better than my tube screamer. But this has more tonal flexability to my ears. I use this as I used to tube screamer for leads and it really kicks the amp in the rear and you can feel the power behind you. I LOVE this pedal because only the gain increases it doesnt color your tone and its true bypass. Dont pass this baby up best one on the market. MXR is the best of the best! Accept no Substitutes!

I've never been a big fan of using pedals as your main source of gain/ distortion. But this pedal has changed my outlook. I use it through my All tube Marshall on the clean channel for bluesy stuff and on the crunch channel for everything else. It has a ton of EQ options. Very well built and easy to set. I also have used it to boost my leads when I'm using amp gain. Works great with a good comp pedal. It can get a little noisey when running it through a solid state amp and the Main LED isn't very bright but the bump switch LeD is super bright.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I use this through a Bugera V22 tube amp, which is a great amp but the overdrive/gain channel is pretty bad. I'm a fan of early Aerosmith, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy. Classic rock tones. In my band we play blues/rock/funk/r&b/soul tunes with a rock edge.

I tried this pedal on a whim, and instantly fell in love. It's got the classic rock overdrive thing, but the secret weapon with this is the frequency knob, where you can cut or add...i don't know what. It just works. It adds a nice, thick body to the notes, almost like it mixes in some fuzz tone and complex harmonics to the overdrive, but it's still focused and tight.

I use an Epi Sheraton with Gibson 57 Classic pickups, and even with the gain almost all the way up, when I roll back my volume knob, it cleans up very nicely.

Nice, thick, overdrive. Not heavy metal, but def hard rock. I play roots/alt country, too, and putting the gain knob at around 9 o'clock it does that, too.

That blue LED is wicked, I agree.

I've had no quality issues with mine, and I've gigged with it, play it all the time.

My one single complaint, if it's a complaint, is that I have to keep the level knob at 9 o'clock to be at equilibrium with the bypass mode (using the amp's clean channel). But that's really not a big deal. Just odd...usually you want that equilibrium up around noon on the dial.

I'm going to get a second one and use as my solo boost.
