OVERVIEW

This wah cries with versatility.

Bob Bradshaw of Custom Audio Electronics designed the MXR MC-404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Pedal with the Cry Baby design team to create a highly versatile wah-wah with top-grade components. The MC404 CAE Wah features dual Fasel inductors with 2 distinct voices (high-end emphasis or low-to-mid resonance), and a built-in MXR MC-401 Boost/LineDriver that adds even more flexibility.

Choose between inductors and turn the boost on or off with the side-mounted kickswitches. Bright LEDs on each side of the wah indicate operation status. The MC404 CAE Wah boasts true hardwire bypass, a long-life CTS potentiometer, and internal pots for the Q control-which varies the intensity of the wah effect-and gain adjustments. You get the high performance and quality that you expect from Dunlop, the world leader in wah-wah technology.

Bob Bradshaw has been one of the world's foremost designers of custom guitar pedal boards and effects systems for many of rock's most influential guitarists for 3 decades. And for just as long, MXR and Cry Baby have been synonymous with the effects pedal innovations that have shaped the tone of modern electric guitar playing. So it was only natural for them all to join forces to create a dynamic line of pedals offering the ultimate in tone, functionality and road-worthy dependability. Since 1980, CAE's groundbreaking pedal designs were made in limited quantities only for a select clientele of world-class guitarists. But now these very same devices and circuits are available to all.

FEATURES
  • Select between a Yellow or Red Fasel Inductor for two distinct tones
  • Features a custom designed CTS extended life low noise potentiometer
  • User selectable gain output stage with kick switch and LED indicator
  • Designed with low noise class 'A' operational amplifiers
  • Bright LEDs indicate effect status, inductor mode, and boost on or off mode
  • True bypass

This wah is incredible! Two-in-one may sound too good to be true, but it lives up to its name. The boost function is great! No one likes to tapdance on their pedal board when they engage the wah and want the solo boost, so this fills that need as well! It is a sharp looking pedal, and the lights on the side with the tasteful red switches just top it off perfectly!

My only complaint is that the pedal does not stay in one place, but instead pulls back to the start position as soon as you take your foot off. So you can't use it as a tone-control type wah where you just sit it in one spot and play with that level of wah effect...

...but I think I'll manage. It's a great pedal, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great wah tone that can run with the best!

After using the standard Crybaby and the Crybaby 535Q, which is my favorite, I tried the CAE Wah. The first thing I noticed is an on/off indicator LED which I had to add to my 535Q, so thats very nice. Seems like a big oversight of a lot of Wah designs is the lack of an indication LED. It sounds transparent and doesn't seem to color your tone much if at all. Its very difficult to dial in however. Though it has the same controls as the 535Q it is much harder to get a good sound throughout the sweep. But aside from that it functions very nice. Now the drawback.... You CANNOT attach this to a pedal board using the regular velcro method. It has rubber non-slip piping around the bottom edge that prevents attaching it to anything. For a gigging musician like me it is very difficult to use since it falls off your board. I like having my board stay together and connected so I can plug and play. So in that respect it doesn't work for me. If you attach your pedals to a board, don't get this wah cause it won't attach. If you use your pedals on the floor and don't have a pedal board then I'm sure it will work great.

    Great Wah

    By Steve McGarvey

Comments about MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've owned a couple of boutique wahs over the years. I'm a fan of the Budda Budwah, and Area 51 Wah, both of which I've owned. Basically, I wore out the budwah, bought the area 51, wore that out, and after some careful consideration, I decided to try out this MC-404. It's right up there with the boutique stuff. The features put it a notch above other pedals at this price point, IMO. Both inductor settings sound very soulful and classic. The red setting works best for humbucker stuff, like satriani, etc. and the yellow setting is best for classic stuff like clapton, hendrix, etc... strat pickups. The boost works great. I find it to be most useful at lower settings but I have fairly hot pickups as it were. The indicator lights are a very welcomed feature... hope they last. The build quality ranks high upon initial examination and use. MXR may have hit a homerun with this pedal. They've had some other homeruns over the years and I wouldn't be surprised if this pedal gains a cult following in time. At this price point, I feel it's very much a fair consideration. My favorite things about it are that: It sounds very vintage and soulful but has dual settings that are equally useful and in a way like having 2 wahs in 1. The boost is useful even though I could live without it, it works well. It feels GREAT right out of the box and is the first wah that I didn't need to tweak the sweep on after 5 minutes of playing. It turns on and off like a finely tuned machine. I highly recommend this wah if you're debating "vintage", "boutique" pedals. It has alot to offer and is of high quality manufacturing.

Comments about MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Guitar Effects Pedal:

At first the sound was getting too muffled in the toe-up position, but a little tweaking of my OD pedal and amp EQ eventually took care of that. I think some other folks have already mentioned that the best voicing range is in the 70 to 100 % of toe-down position. I'm happy with the wah sound even though my overall tone changes slightly with it turned on. Use your tone knob to compensate and you should be fine. Don't expect wild variations by just rocking it back and forth. Squeeze it (sort of) rather than pound it.

      wah'cha gonna do

Comments about MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Guitar Effects Pedal:

great pedal, but most of the range i found is in that 60%-100% range so if you plug it in and jam it back n forth expecting all this crazy variation, you're gonna blow over the sweet spots n be disappointed. in a way it's nice because it takes little effort to use. i need to mess around a bit with the mid range (red) setting, it backs off a lot n i can barely hear it on my neck p/u but i'm sure it'll come in handy somewhere and i'm an instant fan of the boost!

Comments about MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal over a year ago. Sound wise it did not disappoint - the most beautiful organic wah I have ever heard and its great to be able to choose between two different wah sounds and to have true bypass as well as an on/off switch. The LEDs are bright and easily visible on stage. The pedal is built like any other dunlop pedal, read awesome. However I gave it a 4 on quality as the boost function stopped working soon after I bought it. I couldn't give it back as I live in India and had a friend carry it from the states. What basically happens is that when I engage the boost switch there simply is no sound. Thank God the Wah works fine otherwise, else it would have been an expensive mistake. Without this problem I would have rated this pedal 5/5.

        My Search Is Over!!!

Comments about MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Guitar Effects Pedal:

You name any boutique level wah, and I've probably owned it. I received this brand new wah and wow! This one nails the Hendrix vibes!I just finished my 3rd "session" in 2 days with it.The first time, yesterday, the wah was honestly "so, so."The second time, last night, I began using the input level knob and the thing turned into the sweetest, most versatile wah that would no doubt, satisfy any tone hound like myself. But this morning (DAY 2) I dialed in/clicked in the best Hendrix wah tones I've ever heard/owned! Phenomenal!! It interacts with no noise with my other true-bypass fx. My rig: '69 NOS Fender Strat, my pedal board, multiple tube Marshall stacks, plus Marshall Hand-wired 2061 with its stock cab. This pedal rules!!I hate admitting this, but this pedal is way under priced. The MC-404 CAE Wah pedal is like four wahs into one with its switches at the sides/heel area. It's built to last. It's also very appealing to the eyes. Looks meticulously hand-built. Multiple LEDs keep you informed of your settings. Etc... I could go on... But I'm gonna go plug back into it, and create those "otherwordly" sounds... Thank you Dunlop and Bob Bradshaw of Custom Audio Electronics!PS. I feel lucky to be one of the first to own one of these!!!

At first I thought I might be returning this pedal. But the more I practiced with it the more I loved it. Much more sensitive than my crybaby 535, and once I mastered that, the sound was everything I wanted. I did have to trim the internal pots to get a fuller range. Sounds like two different wahs with just a quick kick of your foot.
