OVERVIEW

Overdrive as specified by the Wyldeman him
self!

The MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal performs like Zakk. Whether on his groundbreaking work with Ozzy Osbourne or with his own Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde's guitar playing is loud, tough, and relentless. Zakk's take-no-prisoners attitude extends to his quest for tone, too. His signature ZW-44 overdrive pedal will turn your clean amp into a heavy, chunky, crunch machine. Or, use it like Zakk does and kick it in front of a dirty amp for a screaming, sustaining lead tone. 3 simple controls-output, tone, and drive-make getting up and running easy, so you can concentrate on your chops.

You don't have to like Zakk Wylde to love this pedal. I have respect for him as a musician, but I'm not really into the whole leather and chains, lumberjack, WWF biker metal thing, or whatever. Regardless of who is endorsing it or what it looks like, the ZW-44 is one tasty sounding overdrive pedal. I think it sounds a lot like a TS-808, with a nice balanced sound that retains your guitar's fundamental tone even as you turn up the gain. Really easy to get those great early-ZZ Top tones with the tone knob around 10 O'clock and the gain knob at about the same spot. Responds well to picking dynamics and the use of your guitar's volume pot. One of the best of its kind I've tried, including a TS-808. Rugged MXR quality. Nice compact design. Even if it were neon pink, the size of a shoe box and signed by Michael Bolton, I would still dig it!

I bought mine over 2 yrs ago and my switch went bad as well. The switch would either cut the sound volume by half or just wouldn't switch on or off. The light remains lit no matter what. It's also a bit noisy with no sound playing and in use, but I guess that's normal for an overdrive pedal? so I bought a suppressor. I also paid way too much at the local musician store. However, when this thing is behaving properly it's a beast. I put it in front of a Marshall VS65r and I play a Hellraiser and it just made the amp sound like a true tube amp. Dirty channel and knobs all the way to 11, you can sound like the shredmaster himself. Great sound and quite versatile, I can even get a Voxy type sound on the clean channel with the gain all the way down, output at mid and treble a little left of center. If I didn't get ripped o much at the initial purchase I probably would pay to get it fixed. SO, once it's finally working and on, just leave it there, don't mess with the switch. Overall, great sound and I like what it does to my hybrid, but not reliable.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This thing sounds like a little nightmare! (In a good way) Can get anywhere from a crisp crunchy tone to a deep hard blues sound out of it, so it's actually pretty versatile. Who needs a quality amp when you got this beast, I put it through my Fender 212 and it makes it sound like a marshall full stack of Metal! Highly recommend, if you're looking into it, get it! I've never been so satisfied with a pedal.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I've tried a lot of amps and a lot of pedals. None compare to the tone this pedal gives me. For one, Zakk Wylde is a big name in Metal. I have no interest in that genre or that sound. If you plug in to an amp on a clean tone you can get classic rock to a more pop-punk Blink-182 sound depending on how you set your knobs.

This pedal is really exciting. Being a Wylde pedal I expected a crazy tone only suitable for his style of playing. It turned out to be one of the most well rounded pedals I've ever played.

Clear tone, great for palm muting, and it won't muddy up your sound.

    Nice Overdrive

    By Domin-A-Tor-WVrOu

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

Ok lets all remember that this is an overdrive pedal. This is designed to help out your sound and not necessarily be the end all and be all of overdrive tones. There is a reason that amps that have a clean and dirty channel cost more and the better the sound the more they cost. Distortion pedals are relatively cheap and can really help out an amp that is so-so or give a little punch to a lead so that you don't have to fiddle with the knob settings of the amp right before. With that said THIS PEDAL WILL DELIVER. Simple, sleek and with three settings that cover a wide range of sounds. I like the LED that confirms ON-OFF if you are using it as a lead boost. Sometimes you can get carried away and keep using it in the rythm sections, but the light reminds you that you are not Zakk Wylde and that maybe some of the rest of the band might want to be heard. Solid, dependable, very easy to use.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

Compared to other overdrive pedals I've owned, the Wydle overdrive pedal had the sound I was looking for. I have the output on 10, Tone on 5 and gain on 3. With those settings, my amp really shines and sounds great. I'm amazed at how sensitive the knobs are and how easy it is to change your overall sound by tweaking a little bit here and there. If you're looking to push your amp into hi-gain heaven, pick up a Wydle overdrive, you won't be sorry.
I've tried many overdrive pedals on my Blackstar HT-5 and none have made it sound as good as the Wylde overdrive. The pedal itself is very simple and easy to use. All metal construction and three knobs, simple enough that a drummer could figure it out. You have an output, tone and gain knob. The tone is very sensitive and easy to dial in the right balance of bass and treble. The output controls the level and the gain dials in that dirty tone that everyone craves.
This thing is built to last. You can stomp on it all day and it will keep working.
It's not the cheapest pedal out there, but well worth the money. For the tone and durability alone, you could easily pay twice as much.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I've been on a search for quite a while now for my ultimate tone. I've always been close but I couldn't find the right OD or distortion pedal to really make it work for me, until I found this one. Truly the best sounding pedal I've ever player. Far better than my ts-9, RAT, Custom badass 78', etc.
Combined with my pedal board and my Line 6 DT25 set on the mesa setting, I'm getting an early 90's "No more tears" Zakk sound and I'm loving it. Switch it over to the clean channel and you get really nice growl. I've had tons of gear in my time and I've never felt compelled to review a product, which shows you how highly I feel about this pedal.
Youre average pedal features. Not too much to tinker with, which is what I like.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

Overall its a great overdrive pedal not over the top and its awesome i Reccomend it to anyone
I love the pedal its so simple to use three knobs and it gives great sound it really beefs up the sound on any amp no matter what channel. I read the reviews on how good it and watch so many videos of people using it and the sound was awesome so I knew that I had to buy it.
The sound really beefs everything up especially on an overdrive channel. When i played on clean then turn this pedal on it made it sound jump to a crunch settting even though i set it on clean, on overdrive it gives it that extra kick that I was looking for. The main reason I bought this pedal was to have a good overdrive pedal to kick up my overdrive a little more and bring my Zack Wylde Crybaby to life because If you get the crybaby by itself it looses the sound and gets lost in the mix but with the overdrive it cuts through the mix and brings the sound back to life so you won't be disapointed.
For the price its a great pedal its really good no matter what channel im playing on im not disappointed and along with my crybaby pedals ( dunlop zack wylde & morley mark tremonti) the overdrive gives them and extra kick

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

Very good overdrive pedal. Probably not the best on the market, but it gets the job done. It does generate a bit of noise if you put the drive past noon, but I'm only using it to boost my amp so I keep it at about 10 o'clock. Very sturdy and high quality and I imagine it can take a beating and keep working. Most MXR pedals are built tough.

I would definitely recommend this pedal if you just want to boost your high gain amp to tighten the tone and distortion. However, if you want to use as an overdrive on the clean channel, you'll need a noise gate before the pedal and after the mic because it will get noisy.

Best distortion pedal I've ever used!

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

Top quality stuff here. I've tried a lot of different distortion pedals. I own two others (Boss Super Distortion and Metal Zones), and have tried many others. This takes top prize because it enchances what my amp has to offer, while still allowing it to sound like your amp.The Metal Zone especially gave me a very digital artificial tone, and it felt very scooped. I almost felt like I turned on a preset on some modeling amp. It didn't sound like my amp at all. It almost made my warm rock amp into some kind of solid state metal stack. The Super Distortion is better than the MZ, it's much more natural. It still lacks the balls of the Wylde pedal though. It's a very mild boost, but a good one.The Wylde pedal is good because it doesn't change my amp's tone, it sharpens and thickens it. It's so thick and distorted, but shines with clarity, a perfect combination because you usually get one or the other. It looks great too, and is very strong. You can feel it just by holding it and feeling how heavy and sturdy it is. This is a great compliment to any amp, especially ones that sound good on their own but just need more *oomph* or power. It builds on everything you already like about your amp.My amp is a tube though, and I have yet to try it on a solid state. It should be fine I think.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

First of all, everyone doesn't realize something. Everybody, who has had a bad experience with this pedal (or many others, especially signatures), is that it doesn't work with your set up. Please mention what specific gear you have, cause every amp and guitar are different. Personally, I think Zakk Wylde is very proud of this pedal. It sounds fantastic on a JCM 800 2203, which is what he uses. So just think about your review before you post it. Thank you.

The most awesome overdrive pedal... ever.

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I'd just like to say that the Zakk Wylde MXR overdrive pedal is more than what I expected. I figured I could use an overdrive pedal in front of my dirty channel, so I could get more sustain. It does that... plus much more. It gives my clean tone a fuller, punchier characteristic, which is much like a compressor, but it doesn't alter my actual tone one bit.

I've been looking forward to getting this pedal for sometime. I'm currently using it to boost the gain on my Blackstar HT-5 and wow, what a difference. I'm getting a lot more gain and it sounds heavy. I had to retire my badmonkey, it just couldn't keep up with the Wylde Overdrive.

    Great pedal for Lead Guitarists

    By Karan (india)

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

THis one is perhaps the meanest overdrive pedals that I have come across so far. I use it with other boss pedals plugged straignt into my Marshall. Excellent for pinch harmonics, when used with a boss high gain pedal, it completely give a character to the lead tone. Mix it with a crybaby .. n ua all set. Its a must buy for any guitarist who loves overdrive tone. ITs a must buy .. it just takes a bit of time to get used to it and experiment till the time you get your sweet spot to place this in your pedal board in terms of signal chain. Rock on ..

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I don't know if it was my amp settings or the pedal but i just couldn't get a decent sound out of this pedal. I play epiphone les pauls through a mesa f50 1 12 combo that sounds great together. I tried the pedal on my clean channel just for a overdrive sound and it just didn't get dirty much like i've seen in video's. I also tried it as a boost like zakk does and all i got was a lot feedback and cycle hum when i wasn't playing. When i did play it does give a lot of sustain.

        Metal pedal?

        By thedouglastwo

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I run the Wylde Overdrive to push to tubes on my old Traynor YSR-1 stack (non master vol). It never gets turned off all night, it IS the source of my overall sound, I boost for solos with a Big Muff or a FuzzFace. I like classic rock sounds like Cactus, Zeppelin, Humble Pie ect. and use this overdrive to get those type of low gain sounds out of the clean tube amp. I use a tele and a les paul and they both like the pedal, but a quick tone tweak is required when I switch between them.

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I personally don't like it. It sounds like a weak blues type pedal with a clean channel and does almost nothing added to an overdrive channel. I know it's not supposed to be a straight up distortion pedal. This pedal makes alot of excess noise which needs a noise gate or some equivalant. Like I said in the title, play it for yourself and make up your own mind. If you just want a pedal, get a metal zone.

I just got one of these things over the winter, I am a HUGE zakk fan, and i've been tryin to get that signature sound for years. i thought it might help me, but instead, it seems like im only getting half the power its telling me. Im useing the exact settings on my marshall (that zakk showed me personaly), and im getting plenty of sustain, but i didnt get any boost. In the little booklet (it comes with), it give you setting examples, and i tryed the "Zakk Setting", but all i get is sustain and MAD feedback, too much feedback actully. i highly recomend a noise gate, unless you want your ears to be bleeding. (in a bad way). **if anyone can help me with my problem, PLEASE email me** Another thing, dont exspect any distortion or any bottom from it ether. to me its just a sustain pedal.
