OVERVIEW

(Open Box) An analog tube emulator & overdrive for bass that gives you crushing overdrive and distortion.

Building on the breakout success of the Pigtronix FAT Drive, Pigtronix is proud to introduce the Bass FAT Drive. Fine-tuned for low end muscle and grind, the Bass FAT Drive slams your amp with all analog, tube emulated overdrive that ranges from soft and warm to ripping high gain apocalyptic thunder. Used in front of a DI or solid state amp, the Bass FAT Drive adds a round, organic depth to your bass tone.

The Bass Fat Drive leverages Pigtronix CMOS clipping concept to sculpt a larger than life sound that breaks up based on how hard you hit the strings. Turning the tone control all the way clockwise takes our bass specific low pass filter completely out of the circuit for total transparency and robust low end. Rolling the tone control back attenuates only the top end, leaving midrange and bottom end punch intact.

A Hi / Lo toggle switch brings additional versatility to the Bass FAT Drive's wide-ranging palette of overdrive tones, altering the gain structure for deep saturation. The Bass FAT Drive features true bypass switching and runs fine on standard 9-volt power but ships with an 18-volt adapter for superior headroom, clarity and overall output.

100% Analog wide range BASS overdrive

A nice bass overdrive that leaves your low end intact. It comes with an 18 volt power adapter and does not have the option of running off batteries.

I was looking for a bass overdrive to add some warmth and character to my basses live. I run through a Avalon U5 with no stage amp so the tone can be a bit sterile. I also wanted a true bypass pedal so I could maintain that crystal clear tone when I wasn't using the effect. The Bass Fat Drive does what I was looking for but has one major drawback, not enough gain attenuation for hot active basses. Even at it's lowest gain setting my active basses push the pedal too hard and instead of a nice overdrive it goes into distortion range, and a fuzzy one at that. Most surprising to me is that the manufacturer claims in videos that this is not the case, that it works well with active and passive basses. Unfortunately this is not my experience nor of others that I've read on-line concerning active basses. This should be an easy fix for the manufacturer, just add a pad. The "more" switch to me is useless, even on a passive bass I'll never use it. I understand some may be looking for extreme territory but this is supposedly an Overdrive not a distortion pedal, the manufacturer touts it's ability to simulate a B-15 type breakup not wacky heavy metal guitar tones. With a passive bass I was able to get a nice overdrive thou the tube like warmth they claim isn't really there. With my active basses I was able to dial back the distortion only by turning the bass volume down. I understand guitarist, the ones who know what they are doing anyway, employ this method to control the amount of drive from pedals or a tube amp, I wasn't looking to gain this skill on bass.

The construction is good, the switch seems sturdy and the LED bright.

While I have tried several bass overdrives this is the only one I've used in a live environment. It leaves me curious if an amp simulator or tube direct box might be a better option.

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

I inserted this in my board to be able to add some warmth and break-up to my tone.
The pedal is very responsive to playing dynamics - which I love; but, this means that it's important to consider it's placement in the signal chain as this has a great impact on its tonal palate.
The controls are intuitive and easily make useful changes, for a wide spectrum of overdrive bliss.
(For "Best Uses" I only marked performances because I have not tried it in any other situation. However, based on the product's performance I have no doubt that it would behave admirably in pretty much any situation.)
    A very musical pedal.

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

I was forced to eat my words on this pedal. The first time I tried it, I plugged it into a 9V power supply that I had handy, and thought it sounded terrible. Tinny, gross distortion at very low gain settings. Months later, I came across another one that was still in the box, with an 18V power supply. Night and day difference. This has become a huge part of my tone, at low gain with a little tone rolled off, you can start to get a bit of the old Ampeg fliptop Motown vibe. I prefer subtle, low-gain overdrives, which this pulls off wonderfully. I have tried a lot of bass overdrives, and this is right up there with the Catalinbread SFT in my book. Put it on your board, and you will find yourself using it more and more.

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

I wanted a pedal to give me just a little bit of overdrive fuzz to my sound. You can get a clean boost from this pedal, tubey overdrive, or distortion. It took me about 20-30 minutes of tweaking, but I got a sound I was looking for. So just be patient when you first get it & spend some time with it.. It's definitely worth the time. I use this after my Pigtronix bass compressor. The "more" switch doubles the gain & pushes it over into distortion. It's actually a usable distortion though. Not as metallic as some bass distortion pedals can be. I like Pigtronix's quality & the fact that it comes with its own power supply.

Wish you could dial back the distortion just a little more. Could be that my active bass is enhancing the distortion. Otherwise great sound.

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

It's not exactly what I was looking for, but after trying it out for a few days it grew on me. I thought it wasn't that great at low gain settings, which is what I wanted, but playing with the other instruments it blends in very well. It rounds out your tone and makes it sit well in the mix, while making it more audible. I did not like it with active pickups. I preferred it with passive alnico basses. Another review said you have to take a bit of time to dial it in, and that was my experience too.

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

usable on both voltage settings, it was a blast to experiment with the differences, i actually prefer 9v for the more treble-crunch distortion. there is a very wide range of tones from both the toggle switch and voltage differences, let alone the gain and tone knob are very superior as well. dynamic and touchy controls. excellent pedal, but with a huge amount of packaging waste! i cannot believe how huge the boxes are for these pedals. they're definitely cool, but what a large footprint pigtronix! >,<

Comments about Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive Effects Pedal:

This is one of the most versatile bass overdrive pedals that I have ever used. It covers a wide range of overdrive - from smooth, rich grind to deep, flat-out distortion while retaining the tone of your original dry signal. Even at its raunchiest setting the unit can be switched on and off without huge swings in volume.

The pedal itself is solidly built and the paint job just looks cool! The only possible drawback that I can see is that it does not use batteries. It comes with an 18 volt power supply and I can see where that might bother someone who wants to keep things simple. But, the sound this thing produces is well worth any hassle it might cause you.

I am very pleased with this pedal and it now has a permanent place in my pedal board!

I bought this on the Deal of the Day. After watching a few testimonials about this pedal, I bought it. What a nice surprise. This really adds life to the bass. If you want a touch of tone or full blown distortion, this is your pedal. Easy to use and set up to the tone you want. I don't play much with work and all and this really gave my setup the touch it needed. I don't believe in pedals and like the tone straight out of the amp. Will have to rethink this out. You won't be sorry if you buy this. Highly recommended

As a keyboardist of many years, I've recently picked up the bass guitar. I've been looking for a pedal that not only can give me some distortion, but also warmth. It also sounds great running my trusty old Prophet 5 thru this pedal. The freq. response of synths usually demands a pedal that is more geared towards bass guitars to reach the low end that synths can generate.

Whether it's my synths or my new passion for the bass guitar, this pedal delivers the goods!
