OVERVIEW

(Open Box) A distortion pedal for those who refuse to settle when it comes to tone.

To a discerning and devoted league of tone chasers, Brian Wampler is The King when it comes to organic, convincing and inspiring dirt tones. Thus, Wampler thought it only fitting to name Brian' latest pedal”a simple distortion pedal”The Sovereign.

A little presumptuous, you might say? Wampler thinks this is a pedal that lives up to its name. From cream to ream, thrash to powder puff, hellacious burn to heavenly soothe, The Sovereign will do it for you. Truly.

You see, Brian was asked by a very convincing and influential client (whom we shall name later) to make a "simple distortion pedal." Think for a moment about the amazing distortion pedals Brian has already given us: The Plexi series, the SLOstortion, the ubiquitous Pinnacle and others. How could he top those?

For starters, The Sovereign does not pretend to be another (with all due respect) "A.I.A.B" (amp-in-a-box, for the uninitiated). This beast has its own thing going on. It has a mid control that is admittedly borrowed from other great Wampler pedals like The Pinnacle, but this one is refined, less fussy and instantly gratifying over the full range of its sweep. Seriously rich mids are to be found here, able to cut through the din of the bass and drums in an instant. Smooth, creamy highs”think stainless steel wings on your soaring solos”are a mere flick of a toggle away. The bottom end is tight but with just the right amount of sag to simulate a good tube amp going into orgasmic throes of heat.

Wampler thinks you're going to love this pedal, but you can only buy it at one place, Musician's Friend. That was part of the deal. A fair trade for an idea that inspired this king of pedals.

Knobs and switches really work well. Multiple sounds can be obtained. Works well with your amp. Plays well with your guitar, humbucker, soap bar or single coil pickups etc. Overdrive and distortions are organic sounding. Can emulate boutique pedals costing alot more. I A&B quite a few of my boutique pedals costing $200 and up and it emulatd them extremely close. Almost unbelievable. Good quality components such as resistors, capacitors, diode, switches etc. This pedal is a must have for the serious musician. This is not a one trick pony. This pedal can be a real treat if you are not happy with your lead channel of your amp. It can be your go to lead pedal or rythm as well. Excellent for Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Blues and some Metal. Very happy with this. Brian Wampler has a great ear for vintage and modern sounds.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Just got one a few days ago. I like it. The mid-behavior (finally) lets you tweak it between a bright amp and a darker amp (for me, worked well with single coils in a MusicMan RD50 AND a '68 Bassman). My G&L pickups are slightly bright (ceramic mags) and it worked out just fine with a WGS and Jensen Neo speaker. This pedal can work for me as an alternate dirty sound as I don't really care for distortion generally (I'm more an OD kind of guy).

The high gain on it is very impressive with nice harmonics that jump out and feedback too. Yes - I like it.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I like overdrive and distortion that is both fat and warm sounding. This pedal delivers. It is extremely versatile. It is expensive, but worth every penny. Unlike many other distortion pedals that sound like razorblades thrown at your ears , this distortion box is very ear pleasing.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

amazing sounding unit that truly shines when used on Fender style clean amps and humbucker equiped guitars. Will sound muddy on Marshals, Mesas, and other high gain amps. When used with single coil pickups the bright swith is useful, but with humbuckers is where the magic happens. Love the flexible tone and gain structures, but its bass response is on the tight side. It really cuts through the mix in live situations. A must buy!

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have owned many distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedals over the last 30 years and this is by far the best yet. It plays nice with my other pedals, it works well with my Egnater and my Fender amps, all which are tube powered. Compliments my Fender guitars and my Gibsons equally well. Single coil, humbucker or P 90's, they all benefit from this pedal. Well designed, all usefull features and really built solidly. Wampler delivers a high quality pedal and this one is a tone giant!

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The pedal seems to be well designed and well made. The controls are layed out intuitively and are very sensitive to adjustment. The two toggle switches in the Advanced Gain Structure have a dramatic effect on the overall sound. The pedal doesn't color the tone when off (true bypass). The pedal is extremely versatile and a good sound is easy to dial in. Standard mode has useful tones for Classic Rock (I find Even mode is Plexi tone, and Bright mode is more of a quasi-Hiwatt tone). Boost mode increases the saturation (Even mode is more 80's metal tone while Bright mode has a modern metal vibe). Even with the Gain knob maxed out additional hiss/noise seems minimal in Standard mode but becomes more noticeable in Boost mode (especially on Bright/Boost). I commend Brian Wampler for making a single distortion pedal that can cover so many different gain structures so well with just the flick of a couple toggle switches. MF offers a full money back return policy, so it's a no risk situation to check the Sovereign out for yourself.

This pedal rocks! I've been playing for many years. I play a Strat and a PRS through a Marshall and perform in a rock band. While the Marshall is great for most classic rock overdrive this pedal really sings when you want that more modern chunking mid scoop sound. Very versatile controls get you a wide range of distortion. This pedal is the best distortion pedal I've ever used!

This pedal sounds great. I love that it is not trying to recreate an amp tone or be a remake of some old circuit design. It is just a straight forward, great sounding modern distortion. Just what I was hoping for.

This is a great pedal if you like the tone. Pretty easy to get a great Angus Young, kind of metal/nasal tone if that makes sense. I returned mine not because I liked the tone on my Mesa Express 5:50 better (which I did, but hey that's just taste), but because I'm not a terrific tap dancer and I was always afraid while playing that I'd inadvertently whack my volume knob when switching this bad boy on and off - switching it on and kicking the volume button accidentally at the same time = sudden death. I prefer, if the gizmo has two rows of controls, that a non-critical button, like tone, be near my toe when I'm kicking around down there.

If you're looking for a verstile mid-gain pedal, look no further. Couldn't be happier with it. I play it through the reverb channel of my vintage clone Deluxe Reverb. I use the Wampler Euphoria/Ecstasy for low gain and the Catlinbread Manx Loughtan for the Big Mu## sounds. Killer combination of dirt pedals, IMHO.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Best distortion pedal I have found yet. I've gone through many over the years "chasing tone" and this has got to be the most versatile, best sounding distortion pedal I've ever heard and played through. You can get any kind of distortion sound out of it that you want. Everything from marshall and mesa to fender and peavey. Very organic and sounds brilliant through tube amps. Plenty of gain on tap for any style. Sounds crisp without having an ice pick sound like many other overdrive and distortion pedals do and can even get some decent fuzz out of it as well. At first I thought I had a defective pedal as the sound would get squashed hitting a hard chord or note but found that it was because I had placed it after a buffered pedal. Once I switched the pedals it no longer over compresses the signal. Just thought I would mention that if anyone is experiencing the same problem I had at first. You won't be disappointed getting this and will likely never need to buy another distortion pedal again!

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm very skeptical of pedals that run for 200 or more, but when I think of how much time and money I've spent looking for a distortion that functions like the Sovereign, the price makes perfect sense.

First of all, there is a really good balance of gain, sustain and noise control on this pedal. With many other dirt pedals, to get a singing sustain you'd have to turn up the gain to a point where it may start to sound muddy, fuzzy and noisy. That is not the kind of dynamics you hear on your favorite recordings. As you turn up the gain, it will sound bigger, heavier but will retain a pretty tight attack.

The key to making this pedal work best is working with all of the options, including the two toggles (BRIGHT / EVEN) and (BOOST / STANDARD). Using these wisely will give you access to a variety of dirt sounds. I literally found a JCM style grind (Guns N' Roses, Rage Against the Machine), lightly overdriven hard rock crunch (Who's Next, "The Seeker") and smooth blues (John Mayer, Stevie Ray) all within a few minutes of fooling around with the toggles and my guitar's volume knob. This pedal also cleans up remarkably well, even on the boost mode.

This is one of those desert island stompboxes. I now understand the hype behind Wampler pedals. This little thing really is a piece of genius.

Great for all lead distortion work. Works great with delay pedal. Very good at generating a lead tone that emphasizes lows when you need it. Controls provide ability to generate a wide variety of lead sounds. I am already recommending this pedal to friends. Brian Wampler's reputation for designing and producing great pedals is completely deserved.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Recently switched over to a Blues Jr. III tube amp which has excellent blues overdrive (not too crunchy) and is awesome for 80% of the tunes I play, but my band requires a little more junk in the trunk for the remaining 20%. So the hunt was one for that perfect pedal. I rented the Boss Overdrive from the local pro shop on a recommendation, but that didn't do. Long story short I became the Goldilocks of distortion pedals, returning the pedals I'd rented every couple of days looking for that right one. The pro shop even allowed me to go outside of their usual "rental" only lines of pedals because I couldn't locate the right one. Then I turned 50 in December and my bro, a great guitar player, gifted me the Wampler Sovereign pedal without knowing the trials and tribulations I had been going through. Just a total coincidence. From the moment I plugged it in and sampled its distorted wares, I knew this pedal was just right. There isn't a wasted knob or switch on this. Even minute changes of the Mid Behaviour colours your tone allowing you to dial in the sound you need. For me, the Sovereign allows me the versatility I require in the band - from subtle blues crunch to Ozzy and Judas Priest distortion - it's the pedal that promises everything and keeps that promise. As a boutique pedal, of course it's not cheap (unless my bro buys you one too) and most likely if you forked out the cash you'd find a competing pedal that would suit your needs. Seems sturdy and well made - the knobs have a heavier, quality heft to them and the on/off switch has a satisfying "click". I have a couple of other pedals that have a soft click and I hate that - I need to know that pedals on without looking. For pedal board folks, I love the fact that the power in is on the top, rather than the side (like MXR). Just a personal preference.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Been playing guitar for over 50 years. Was full time till 1985. Too old to rock, to young to die, got a day job but still play gigs. Was looking for a new toy. You know if your looking for an OD/distortion pedal and you're gonna spend over a hundred, there all gonna be good. Unless you get a defective one, you can usually dial in pretty much what you're looking for. The Sovereign isn't cheap but it does give more tonal options with a mid knob that actually works. I play out a couple time a month and have used this pedal for three gigs. I'm not a metal player and I guess you'd call what I do classic rock. I play an old LP Custom through a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue which is not a heavy gain type amp. This pedal works well with it. Now it doesn't sound like a vintage Marshall at full grind but this one works for me.

Comments about Wampler Sovereign Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

First off, the tone, sustain, and decay on this pedal are warm, powerful, rich and smooth.
Each control offers a significant and obvious effect.
There is nothing slight or nebulous about the variances, they are wide and highly usable.
With some pedals you split hairs and struggle to find a sweet spot.
This pedal practically steers you into the correct choice.
Out of the many distortion pedals I've gone through,
this one best allows me to dial in all my guitar and amp combinations with great ease.
