OVERVIEW

Delivers 120W of power and 3 voices for all-tube tonal control.

The Peavey 3120 high-gain guitar amplifier head is a versatile 3-channel amp with 120 watts of power and a trio of distinct voices capable of producing guitar tones from crisp and clean to total high-gain saturation.

The Peavey 3120 gives rock guitar players a triple-threat tone onslaught with generous amounts of gain, 120 watts of power, and 3 fully independent channels of all-tube, tone-shaping satisfaction. The Lead and Rhythm channels feature gain and volume controls and an active 3-band EQ, while the Clean channel offers nicely rounded tones crafted by a passive 3-band EQ and volume control. A global master volume governs the amount of power delivered by its 4 EL34 or 6L6GC power-amp tubes, while the Gain controls on the Lead and Rhythm channels adjust the amount of 12AX7 gain saturation.

The 3120 rear panel hosts a unique Peavey custom tone control feature, a 3-setting damping switch that alters speaker resonance to create tight, medium, and loose tones-from a precise punch for rhythmic attack to a full, widely resonant sound. Also on the amp head's rear panel is a footswitchable effects loop with dedicated Send and Return controls and a Line Out with Level control.

FEATURES
  • 120 watts into 16, 8 or 4 ohms (switchable)

I wasn't planning on getting this head. It was suggested to me after I'd owned TWO Randall RT100Hs within a month; one that was defective when I received it, and a replacement that died two weeks later. Spend the extra money and get a quality product made in the USA.

This head has a nice Clean channel and the Rhythm/Lead Overdrive channels provide more gain than you'll probably need. The Overdrive channels belt out the distortion but do it crisply and clearly.

I see a lot of YouTube videos of people bashing this head because it's a "recased Triple X," but we all know the type who post on YouTube; the same people who don't have any clue and have probably never even seen this head. DO NOT put any stock into what these 3120 bashers say about this head! I own this head and I've played it. I can tell you from experience this head is a good head. If you love high gain and want something close to a 6505 but with more versatility, this is your ticket.

The best part about this head isn't the way it performs, but the pride that comes with buying an American made product and keeping a few American factory workers employed for a few more days. The high quality and excellent performance are bonuses.
This head has an effects loop (which I have not used), plus some adjustments for either a "loose," "medium," or "tight" sound. I'm assuming these are in place of a "Resonance/Presence" control.

It has separate EQs for all channels, including Volume, Gain, Highs, Mids, and Bass controls. There is also a Master Volume. Turn the Volume controls up halfway and turn the Master Volume control up to about "2.5" and this head will shake your house right off its foundation! It is LOUD!
This is NOT a "modeler," which is even more of a reason to like it.

The reason I gave this head a "7" rating is because of the absence of a "Reverb" control. That'd be nice to have, but I haven't found it necessary.
Quality? The best. It's what you'd expect from a USA-made head, and what you'd expect from Peavey.

It worked right out of the box, there aren't any bubbles in the tolex, the knobs are tight, and it is as solid as it looks.
This head is awesome for the money. Where else are you going to find a head that's made in the USA for this price and performs at this level? Nowhere.

I ORDERED THIS AMP HEAD BASED ON THE REVIEWS AND THE DEMOS ONLINE. THE TWO DISTORTION CHANNELS WAS A HUGE DISAPOINTMENT. RUNNING IT THOUGH A MARSHALL 1960 CAB MADE IT SOUND LIKE A PAWN SHOP SPECIAL AMP. I PLAY 80'S METAL AND HARD ROCK AND THIS HEAD DOESNT CUT IT. ONLY GOOD THING I CAN SAY IS IT HAS A NICE CLEAN CHANNEL. SO IF YOU PLAY METAL YOU MAY WANT TO GET A PEDAL OR LOOK AT SOMETHING ELSE.

This thing is so LOUD!!!

By Robert Broden

from St. Paul, MN

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I give it an 8 on the overall because of the missing reverb and the presence/resonance controls that are Peavey standards, but the active tone controls make up for that. I can get an early Metallica sound, an EVH "brown sound", a Fender "blackface", and clean Vox tones out of it.(Without alot of trouble.) Dialing in my own "signature" tone was a no brainer. I have a preference for American tones, so I relaced the output tubes from EL34s to 6L6GCs, but brit tones are available. (I know a dude that has one and he kept the stock EL34s in it and it sounds great if thats what you like. Nice upper mid presence) This thing kicks major butt. Did I mention that this is the LOUDEST amp I have ever owned? Well, if I didn't, It is the LOUDEST amp I have ever owned. I've owned probably 75-80 amps over the years, and this one (with the exception of a modified '71 Marshall Plexi that got stolen way back in the 80s) is my favorite of all time.
I love the features of this amp. I have owned this amp since it first came out.( I special ordered it before it was available to the public) I replaced the stock EL34s with 6L6GCs and it has more bottom end than you could ever reasonably use. The active tone controls on the crunch and lead channels are dramatic. There is no tone I cant conger up, and it does a nearly spot-on early Metalica tone. The damping switch can be set for modern or classic tones and anything in between. In my opinion, the only thing lacking is a on-board reverb. But a good reverb stomp works for me.
The 3120 sounds good with every cab I've cranked it through. But it really shines through an old Peavey "Silver-side" 4x12 that I've had since the 80s. It's rugged and road worthy. I am brutal on gear, and this thing has taken everything I can dish out so far.
You can spend $1000 more and you will have wasted your money. I know that everyone has their own preferances as to what they want or expect of an amp, but in my humble opinion, there is not a more versatile amp for the money available on the market. Great job Peavey.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The 3120 I ordered arrived at the music store today. To be frank, I had a slight feeling of disappointment while I was giving it a test run. I already asked the salesman about possibly trading it in for a XXX II. When I took it home, I noticed that I was using the "loose" setting in the store. Switching it to the "tight" setting was like night and day! The "tight" setting has the lowest volume on the dampening switch, but has the most low-end and fullness - not to mention the cleanest and most responsive setting for playing fast Di Meola style alternate-picking riffs without hearing a bunch of unwanted distortion in the background. The lack of loudness in the tight setting is nothing that can't be remedied by a little nudge on the master volume control After tinkering with the EQ and gain settings, I got close to the same tone I have on my JSX, but with much lower settings on the gain knob. The rhythm channel has the biggest crunch tone I've heard yet. The clean channel is clean and chimey, but can achieve deep woody Jazz tones with the right guitar. Most of the demos I've seen on YouTube don't do this amp justice. If you're in the market for a versatile amp with tons of usable gain, but without paying tons of cash to have it, this is the amp for you - believe me.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I use the new Steve Vai Dimarzio Breed Humbucker(not high output)which really chews sweet in the midrange. I don't think this amp would be good for single coils. It's way too bright. I'm into AC/DC and old Van Halen mid-gain up to older metal tone so you may think....."What is he doing with this very HIGH gain amp?". Well, if you know how to pick with a dynamic range and if you......"ACTUALLY USE THE GUITAR'S VOLUME CONTROL". Very sweet classic tone is available up the gazoo!! I like it better than any amp I've ever had including all tube Marshall's, Fender's, Carvin's, and Crates. If you are a traditionalist like me do NOT be freaked out by the VERY high gain. Just keep the amp gain under 1/3rd and USE your guitar's volume control IF you need to. It sounds sparkly and juicy and not just screamy. ALSO the TONE controls on the crunch and lead are not only active, they are HYPER ACTIVE. BIG changes can be made with only a very slight movement of the treble, mid and bass controls. Reverb would be nice at home, but let me tell you beginners that using reverb live usually will merely dilute your tone.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Even thou this is a re-dressed Triple X, it still kicks butt. I have 2 Mesa's, and this amp stands on it's own without hesitation. I digg the Peavey sound, the simplicity of being able to dial in a tone quickly (unlike a Mesa that you've got to completly understand the nuances of the tone controls sequence and interactions) It has an awesome response, that allows for musical feedback at low household volumes. My only negative comment would be that they should've made the gain structure of Ch2 less "over the top", so that Ch2 would cover more range as an Crunch/Overdrive, and left Ch3 to the Super Heavy stuff. With that said, I use Ch2 set with a volume for Rhythm, and Ch3 pumped for solos. Get yourself an RJM amp switcher to simultaneously change amp channels & midi FX patches and rock on.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp with the intent on trying to tame the HUGE amounts of gain. I needed an amp with 3 channels and the JSX didn't do it for me. I already have 6505 plus for more high gain stuff.

Why did I buy a 3120 which is known for its high gain when I wanted a more classic sound? I needed 3 channels and knew that I could change the preamp tubes.

I ordered 4 12au7 from M.F. and slapped them in my new 3120. For me the change was EXACTLY what I was looking for. The clean channel warmed up, and the crunch and lead channels had no more of that ridiculous gain. The amp is now a true rock and roll monster and I've actually had to set the gain and volume both significantly higher with the 12au7 tubes.

With the 12ax7's anything above 5 was insane, now I'm at about 8 with a greatly increased volume setting too. I feel like the amp is more open and dynamic and I can play it instead of it playing me.

So if you need a great classic rock sounding amp with 3 channels for under a grand grab a 3120 and put in some 12au7's. *** warning *** 12au7's will make this a crunch amp not a distortion amp. you will lose that fizzy distortion. Metal guys and hard rock guys should not do this!

I used to be in a tech/death sorta band that played through 6505/5150 and almost went with one of them , but I didn't want a cookie cutter tone. I also play the blues and favored flexability in amps. This amp really rocks. You can sound as beefy as whitechaple, or as chuggy as kse while flipping over to the cleans for a warm creamy tone. Only thing I would suggest is rather obvious but make sure you have a decent cab to allow this beast some room to roar. I use an egnater armageddon cab.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I recently purchased this head at a local store. All I can say is wow. This head has an great clean channel which can bite when you want it to, or smooth out perfectly. The rhythm channel packs a lot of punch. It has plenty of gain for crushing metal, but you can also get a great rock sound as well. The lead channel is great for a blistering solo or melodic lead. It can cut through the mix, but retain a lot of fullness. This amp is very versitile and will suit your playing needs. The price tag is a great bonus.

WHEN I BOUGHT THIS AMP OFF OF E=BAY, I GOT OR HAD THE DIRTIEST FACE ON THE PLANET. I REALLY COULDN'T GET OVER HOW WELL THIS AMP RESPONDS TO SUBTLE NUANCES AND RIPPING AND SHREDDING WITHOUT THE USE OF AN OVERDRIVE. OF COURSE I USE A TUBE SCREAMER IN THE FRONT TO GIVE IT MORE SUSTAIN AND PINCH HARMONICS BUT THIS AMP WILL SURPRISE YOU. BETTER THEN 5150'S, THIS IS ONE OF THE TOP AMPS MADE BY PEAVEY ALONG WITH THE 6505+ AMPLIFIER. THIS IS A TRULY GREAT SOUNDING HEAD.

Basicly, the Ultra Plus reissue but redefind. Great amp for a grand! Comes w/ f/s and tons of gain! The 2nd and 3rd channel eq section has active eq. What this means is the knobs are very sinsative to a touch which changes the sound little to alot. The gain is massive! I love this amp! Also kinda quite. Not bad Peavey. From country clean, 80's rock, metal, DEATH metal to BLACk metal!! Also pushes live stage shows to max! Buy this amp! My last amp.

I played a JSX the same day that i tryed this, and they are similar voiced, probably because of the el34s. But they are both nice sounding amps. The JSX sounds a bit better to me, but this one for the price wins as its is a bit cheaper. The dampening switch on the back is a nice addition which allows you slightly alter the way the speakers produce your sound. It has plenty of gain for me on the Rhythm and Lead Channel, the clean channel is nice and clean, and loud, it kept up well with the rhythm and lead channel. Its a nice amp.

Comments about Peavey 3120 120W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I was in the market for a new amp and moving from the Line 6 HD147 wasn't easy (great amp). I love the high gain stuff and found most amps I like to be too expensive and couldn't justify a 2 grand head at my skill level. I thought a lot about the 6505+ till I plugged into the 3120. It's less noisy, more forgiving, articulate, more effective clean channel for someone like me who just wants to plug in and play and still has a competitive gain structure. I actually find use for all three channels which is something even on more expensive heads I didn't do. Only downfall is the presence/resonance is a back panel feature limited to a single, three position switch. While it makes a big difference, it would be nice for it to be adjustable. Other than that, get a better cab for it. The 3120 is a rock solid, road worthy, unique, demonic toned force to be reckoned with. For the money you cannot go wrong.

I compared this amp side by side to a Crate BV(older model), a new Crate BV, a line 6 bogner tube head, mesa dual rectifier, and a 5150. The 3120 absolutely RULES! What I really like about this head is that it doesn't have that noisy high-mid frequency that most high gain amps have too much of. This is the ultimate metal amp and I can bet my life everyone is gonna start buying these things! They are cheap and peavey is immortal! It is a very low noise amp as well. I can't believe it doesn't have reverb though...I'll survive. Just buy it. Oh, I upgraded my cab to a Krank cab, holy crap!

I have had this amp for about a month now and I really can't find too much wrong with it. The only things I don't like about it are the dampening switch on the back and the dramatic difference in volume between the clean channel and the two dirty channels. Other than that, get yourself a reverb pedal and crank out tha jamz!!

This is the best amp I have played in years, I have owned Marshalls, Mesas, Line 6, other Peaveys and this amp rules. For the most part it is a triple xxx with el34's instead of 6l6's. It is a fantastic metal amp, I use the crunch channel as it gets all the gain you could ever want but it still cuts without getting muddy. There is not a whole lot of difference between the lead and crunch channels with the same settings except that the crunch is slightly more defined sounding. It's easy to find a great sound by plugging straight in and tweaking the e.q. the effects loop can also be used as a lead boost by turning the send level up. The el34's are great, especially when it comes to lead work, individual notes ring out and are harmonically rich, pinch harmonics sound great. Don't waste your money on a marshall or mesa boogie head chech this head out, it's loud and bold. If you play at a loud volume you will need a noise suppressor to kill the sqeal when you mute the strings also i recommend a good cabinet that can handle a lot of bottom end. Iuse cabs with vintage 30's and it sounds great

I played this amp at the music store and all I have to say is wow. This thing has way more gain that you have use for. I play stuff like as I lay dying, a day to remember, august burns red... and I can achieve this tone on the rythum channel easly. The cleans are good, if you know peavey cleans. The only thing I wish it had was reverb. Lets just say I was saving for a high gain amp like a mesa single or a 6505+ but this thing to me sounded better, was cheaper, and has a clean channel unlike the 6505 series. Take my word for and try it out, you wont be disapointed.

The Peavey 3120 can sound like any other amp just by changing tubes. It has the ability to be biased hotter and switch between 6L6 and EL34 type tubes. Want it to sound like a marshall, put EL34s in it. Want it to sound like a mesa, put 6L6s in it. My faves are KT77s or 6CA7s. This thing can emulate them all. Why spend $1500-$4000 on a head when this can do it all. Very Brutal, no bs amp. The only head better is the JSX/XXX II (not as dark and more mids/presence). Slay away!
