I got this amp the same day I got my first bass (OLP Stingray). Just recently i bought a Korg multifx pedal and brought the whole set-up to band practice. Everyone was amazed at how loud the little thing got! Sadly, the sound doesn't carry well so you lose a lot of tone and sound in big areas. BUT! in a large room, with drum set and a half-stack, this thing can hold it's own. I had it at about 7.5 and it was shaking the whole house. Great tone too, excellent lows, warm mids, a little weak on the highs but I rarely use 'em. Very sturdy, really starting to wonder what the speaker's rated at, it seems to be invincible!

Great little amp sounds really good when practicing in your bedroom, but 15 watts just isn't enough to cut it playing with other people. Don't get me wrong - I really like this amp, but it's simply not loud enough for anything more than practicing alone or maybe playing bass with one or two unamplified acoustics. It's got great features, like fantastic tone, a headphone jack, and CD-in jacks, but they come at the expense of volume. I'm sending it back and spending an extra twenty bucks to get a Behringer Ultrabass with 45 watts and a 10 inch speaker.

I bought this amp for a travle amp. Thats the only good thing about it.If I go over 2 it has hevy fuzz, and bad fuzz at that. It wouldnt be half bad if you could get a clean sound out of and hear it, have an Eq and a preamp on hand if you want to play with this.

            Corrected review - Distorted sound.

Comments about Peavey MAX 158 Bass Practice Combo:

I recently gave this amp and very good review. I have since purchased a new Bass Guitar, the Sterling Ray 34, whichs sounds very distorted through this amp. My previous guitar, the Yamaha RBX170 sounded much cleaner throught this same amp. I'm guessing that the active pickups and preamp on the Sterling contributes to the problem. If you are looking for an amp in this price point, I might consider the Fender Rumble. I sold the Yamaha so I can no longer do a side by side comparision. But I never had a problem with the passive pickups and the sound quality of this amp before, and now I am not loving it as much.

            A great little practice amp!

Comments about Peavey MAX 158 Bass Practice Combo:

I've owned this amp for at least 2 years and for $100 you can't go wrong. I practice regulary with a local band and I never needed to put this amp above 5 to be heard above the drums, 2 guitars and the keyboard player. I get good tones out of this amp using primarily the vintage setting and middle(5) on all 3 eq setting and I shape the sounds nicely with my Yamaha RBX170 or Sterling Ray34 basses. There are some complaints about distorion, in other reviews, but I've haven't found that to be a problem for me, but I've never needed to crank it up past half. I use a 100W SRW for any gigs we play. For a practice amp that's small and easy to carry around, this gets the job done very nicely.

I am new to playing the bass and I bought it for practicing in the house. That's what its designed for and its a great piece of equipment. I don't have to put the volume very high to rattle the place. It has plenty of power and a nice boom quality.

Comments about Peavey MAX 158 Bass Practice Combo:

Tried this in Guitar Center today alongside the Fender Rumble. I really wanted to like the Peavey since I'm generally pretty anti-Fender, but couldn't get a clean sound out of this. If you wanna play at a decent volume level you're going to be playing with some serious distortion. Just thought the amp was overall crappy when you can get a very nice (for the price) sound out of the Fender.

Great amp, I use it with bass and guitar. It really sounds great with my strat I actually use it to gig, just need to mic it up. The transtube technology really sounds good. I use a MXR Dist III and I am amazed at what great sounds I can get. Great amp for the money.
