Dual channel and monstrous all-tube output!

The VB-2 is a Peavey bass amplifier head built around a tube power section that uses six EL34 tubes to deliver its stunning 225 watts of power. By adjusting the Clean Gain and Overdrive Gain controls on the footswitchable Clean and Crunch channels, respectively, you can dial in tones ranging from the snarling grit of rock and metal to the weighty thump of old-school dub and reggae to clean, punchy hi-fi--all while delivering the necessary "cut" to maintain a strong bass presence in live performances.

Backing up the amplifier's tube growl is a 3-band EQ that combines the best attributes of passive and active tone controls. This section includes high and low controls, as well as a mid control with a four-position midrange selector switch that allows you to set the mid-frequency shift at 200, 400, 600 or 800 Hz.

Peavey's patented Resonance and Presence controls, which adjust the damping factor at the low and high ends, respectively, along with a three-way speaker impedance selector, enable you to match the VB-2 to virtually any bass speaker enclosure. A footswitchable mute/tuner circuit and front-panel effects loop give players additional flexibility.

Love this amp, I have a few suggestions, if you are going to purchase, go online and get an AC powered pancake fan and attach it to the tube protector screen with som cable ties, install it so it pulls heat away. Really helpful when you're cranking stage level volume.
Invest in some Electro Harmonix 6ac7's for your replacement power tubes. make sure to check bias, and don't go over 28mA. I promise you, your sound and smile will be a mile wide, the amp is great as it is, but those tubes are heaven under glass in the VB2. I've just let you know a great secret on how to make the VB2 the best sounding tube out there. With those tubes, you can hold your own against SVT's and buy American at the same time

ordered on Wed, received on Friday, played at low volumes for two hours Friday evening. Woke up Saturday and played (hoping to gig with it that night) but a crackling, popping noise became apparent immediately (no....not cords) and would not go away. Used my Goldline 500 and all the same cords for Saturday's gig and sounded fine so know it wasn't cords. I was really looking forward to this tube amp.....lesson learned. I started the return process with MF immediately then ordered a GK 1001RB-II which i've owned before and even though it's the farthest thing from a tube amp.....it's an incredible amp.

Had a chance to gig this amp twice while I borrowed it from a friend. Ran gain around 3 and master around 5 with a nice funk setting tone wise. Paired with a jaguar HB bass or a Washburn xb600 with Aguilar pickups. Very nice warmth and roundness out of this amp. Got some real nice natural breakup out of the lower strings. Sounded great in my classic rock band. We play a lot of classic rock country and blues, and it did it for me on every song!

Comments about Peavey Tour VB-2 Tube Bass Amp Head:

I bought this amp used from MF in 2010 for a very modest price. I'm using it with 500 watt 2x10 and 400 watt 1x15 cabs. 225w of tube power will blow your walls away if you put it on full volume, this thing may also blow your speakers if you try to match it with weaker cabs, so don't plug it into some cheap 200 watt box and crank everything on 10.

This is a very versatile head which can be used for any situation - classic rock, modern metal, country, punk, post rock...you name it. It can go loud and clean or you can dial a nasty overdrive on the 2nd channel which I mostly use, or anything in between. VB2 also sounds very nice with pedals. I have a couple of bass overdrive pedals to push it a little further. This thing is very loud, I rarely put a master dial past 6 on this head in any situation whether it's a band practice or some medium size gig. DI out is very useful and sounds nice too, did not use the effects loop very much.

Some people complain that the amp will get hot, I haven't had a problem with it. Some other tube amps go much warmer from my experience, any tube head will be hot if you go full volume. My cat actually likes it so much that she would jump on the top every time I plug it in to practice. Which means that it's not hot really, it's just a little warm.

I don't know how Peavey managed to produce this amp in the US and sell it for such a low price. Any other full tube amp of similar characteristics would normally cost a lot more. I noticed that they use chinese transformers, which would certainly be a little cheaper, but you still wouldn't expect the transformers to be wired by hand, it's done by the same machines anyway.

To summarize: this amp is worth every penny and even more. Don't be suspicious about the price. I haven't had any issues with it for almost 4 years and I haven't even replaced the original tubes yet. After reading some reviews here I will probably do that, it's about time.

Just a quick note: the only 1 star review of this amp is actually a fully positive review from some guy who messed up on the rating part. Probably just because of this guy the amp has 4.5 and not all 5 stars.

Comments about Peavey Tour VB-2 Tube Bass Amp Head:

The title of my review says it all. I rarely write a review without owning a product for awhile, and that's because I want to give you, a potential buyer of this product an unbiased opinion. That said I have owned this amp for over a year and play out of it at least 3 times a week for up to 4 hours at a time. (Yeah, I play it a lot and push it as far as it can go.) First off it's very easy to dial in your sound. I own several tube bass amps and this one is my everyday player. It's sound is similar to all the rich tube bass amps that are popular in todays market. I could easily identify what I liked in tone through the well thought out control panel. The amp itself if well made and very durable. I have had no problems with the construction of the amplifier, no handles or feet falling off. That said, I have found a few design flaws that are not make it or break it when deciding on purchasing this amplifier. Even though Peavey has gone out of it's way to provide plenty of ventilation for the power tubes, it could really use a fan. I have had a shut down with this amp and it freaked me out. I shut it down and it worked flawlessly after the tubes cooled. Also don't be fooled by the price. This is a tube amplifier and will need to be re-tubed shortly after your purchase so budget another $200 for a new set of power tubes. Yes folks, that's were Peavey is saving you money. The Ruby brand tubes are really cheap [*]tubes that will die very, very quickly if you use this amp a lot. You may also need to change the pre-amp tubes as well. They too are cheap and will become microphonic and destroy your tone. That said, I still really enjoy the amp and would recommend it. If you're new to the tube game this is a great amplifier to start out with. It's also great if you're a regular player who needs a bulldog behind you that switches on every time. Just make sure you change those tubes and you'll be styling.

I took a chance and ordered one of these babies. It`s a winner. Get the 4/10 tour cabs. Yes, get two and you`ll be set! No issues just compliments from the other bands and audience. Can`t be beat for the old school sound that`s easy to use too. It`s a must have. Yes I now have to hear the VB-3!

Comments about Peavey Tour VB-2 Tube Bass Amp Head:

I was in the market for an all tube bass head for quite some time. I looked at the ads for the SVT and dreamed about having enough money to buy one. Then one day I saw the Peavey VB-2 in the corner of my local guitar store. What's this? An all tube bass head for...HOW MUCH?! The price was half of what the SVT typically sells for! I grabbed a guitar and plugged it into the VB-2 to try it out. The rest, as they say, is history. Once I heard the tonal quality of this Peavey amp I knew I had found something special. Then, upon further inspection, I saw that the VB-2 had a mid-range frequency selection switch and an overdrive button, which can be activated via a footswitch that is sold separately. I ended up buying one for about $35.00 on eBay. I've used the amp with with my Ampeg 115/410 cabinet and it sounds SWEET! Talk about tube tone! I've also recorded with it using the DI and the expected tone came through on the recording. Plenty of power for live performances, tube tone, American made and great features at half of what you'd expect to pay for a comparable amp. I am happy!

Comments about Peavey Tour VB-2 Tube Bass Amp Head:

I purchased this amp for myself as an early Christmas present last year, have been playing regularly using the VB2 as my main (and only) bass head. With the initial "honeymoon period" over, here are some of my experiences. After doing extensive research on sites like Talkbass (highly recommended) I finally decided to make the jump to all-tube. While 225 watts doesn't sound like much, this head (paired with my Genz Benz neox 212T) had the tone, fullness, and power for all the venues I play - including small and large clubs, and outdoors. Yes, I use the extremely user friendly DI for all gigs, but I didn't need to crank everything up to be heard outdoors. While the head is well vented, it does run quite hot. I have not had an issue with this, but it seemed to get especially warm when I was playing in a small stuffy club, cramped up in a small corner. On the plus side, it kept the order of fries I had sitting on top warm until the set break. Also to note is that I have had this head in for warranty work twice since I bought it. The first time was for the secondary fuse that blew for no reason. The amp powered up but produced no sound. The main fuse is easy to access at the back, but the fuse that blew required taking the covers off and getting inside. Not an easy fix at a gig. The second time was to fix a broken impedance selector switch at the back. Both these issues were covered under warranty (very good!) but I had to wait over 1.5 months for the switch. Apparently up here in Canada, the parts must be shipped from the States (bad!).I would definitely recommend this head to anyone on the fence regarding pure solid state, hybrids, and all-tube. For a bargain price, this Peavey delivers that tubey goodness that can't be had any other way.For reference, the gear I regularly use (and reviewed) with this head:- Peavey VB-2-Genz Benz neox 212T-POD XT Live-2007 MIA Fender Jazz-2008 Ergo EUB-1984 MIJ Squier Precision E-Serial-1986 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special

Comments about Peavey Tour VB-2 Tube Bass Amp Head:

The Peavey VB2 has served me well this summer. I picked it up last spring to A/B against my Traynor YBA200-2. The Peavey had an ease of use, volume, and 5 year warranty that the 4 year old, slightly temperamental Traynor lacked. So I kept the Peavey and sold the Traynor.Since then, it's been on stage about 12 times at gigs ranging from park district events to opening for Sara Evans and has performed very well. I play mostly Country right now, and through my Carvin 8x10 cab, I can get round, loud, thumpy and punchy tone at volumes far in excess of what I will ever need. After a tube swap, the Traynor I previously owned had a slightly sonically richer low end, but the Peavey is very close, and makes up for it in other ways.Functionally, it is a fine piece of equipment. The direct out is quite clean, and the DI level knob has proved useful in several instances where I had the amp dialed in and didn't want to change anything to adjust the level going to the board. I never use the over drive feature, but the eq is quite responsive and the mid switch is great for quick on-stage tone adjustments. The rear tuner jack and tuner/mute switch is very useful also. The lack of a self bias feature kept it from a full "5" rating, but that's a very minor quibble.Quality and Value are quite high. Apparently there were alot of amps shipped in the first run that had some quirks, and that's why I only gave a "4" to quality, but everyone I've read seems happy with Peavey's service. Mine has run flawlessly, and is, in my humble opinion, the best value in tube amps currently available. Knowing that it was Made in the USA and is backed by Peavey makes for alot of peace of mind.Sum up, if you have to have an Ampeg or Fender, than go ahead. For my money however, the Peavey does everything a working musician needs from a tube head and does it well and reliably at a bargain price.

I bought this as a replacement to my Aguilar DB350 200 watt tube amp. The Aguilar sounded great, but the fan was too loud for studio work. I new nothing about the VB-2, and was looking at Ampeg tube amps, and the sales rep showed me this. I played it and loved it. It sounded more like a classic tube amp than the Ampeg SVT classic, and was significantly less in price. IMO, this is a "best bang for the buck" in the tube bass head category.
