i bought this amp about 2 weeks ago i have been pleased and disapointed by it. It has a ton of features (pre-amp fx, amp models, rack fx)and it has pretty decent tone right out of the box.I played a gig with it 4 days after i bought it and my sound at the club was very disapointing. I play thrash/death/hardcore metal and i couldnt get the high gain models to have any kind of sustain. this was mostley cuz of lack of time tweaking my sound. the only bad thing about this amp is it has a noisegate that cant be turned off or even adjusted and it will kill the sustain on this amp.it makes the onboard tube screamer and xr wild useless because it causes this horrible screech and woosh at the end of every note. I solved this problem by throwing a real ibanez ts9 in my pedal chain and adding a boss ns2 gate also; the gate can actually cut of this horrible swoosh and the ts9 can add the proper boost you will need to get the sustain you will want when playing on high gain models. the clean models on this thing are great probably the best i have found on a tube amp that can also create high gain. After figuring out the issues this thing is capable of some really brutal distortion and the tubes make it very rich and thick not flat and fizzy like line 6 amps. i would recomend this head but make sure you are prepared to spend time tweaking and have a decent boost pedal if you want to play extreme metal with it. also the effects are pretty good and useable they are not the greatest you will hear but they do sound good. better than most floor efx systems. by the wat this thing is freaking loud!!!! it goes to 13 and you will not need to go past 7 or 8 in any situation it really fills the room. last thing peavey is constantly updating the software in this unit and have fixed most of the problems they just need to make the noisegate adjustable or at least let you turn it of. if they do that this thing would be the best modeling amp with tubes on the market.

Bought this amp in late September, and was blown away by the sounds and features available, as were my bandmates and several fans mentioned how good our sound was with the new amp.Fast forward to October, and the amp stopped working, so off it went to the local Peavey service center, who kept it for a month, conveniently taking it past Musicians Friends 45 day return policy. Service center claimed it was a faulty board which was on backorder from Peavey.Took the amp to a 2nd service center, who shipped it off to Peavey for repair. Peavey Customer Service seems to be closed as they are not answering phones, or replying to emails, so here I am 3 months later with an amp that I have used for one month, and don't know if I will ever see it again!. I have since learned that there are many Vypyr owners reporting similar issues.Bottom line, when it works, it is a phenomenal amp, but good luck on getting it repaired, or getting any response from Peavey. While I will continue to purchase from Musicians Friend, I will never buy another Peavey product.

Vypyr 120H tube head with digital modeling and effects

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This is by far the most juvenile looking amp I have ever owned. Those pointy things on the front and the goofy light show make this amp look like it was marketed towards tweens. Please, give me a retrofit that makes it look like a Fender blackface, Marshall Plexi or even a Peavey Classic. The looks of this head and the sanpera II footswitch make me want to puke..... but the sound is utterly fantastic. The cleans are breathtaking and the distorted and metal sounds are spot-on. Throw a towell over it and you can play anywhere!
Loaded with features. Just a few less than a Vetta but more than the Cybertwin.
I don't know what people are talking about regarding the quality, fit and finish of this amp. I've had many different amps from several manufacturers and the Vypyr 120H is just fine. Sturdy, good Tolex, solid build quality, the wood is thick and solid, metal is heavy enough, knobs stay on, corners can handle some abuse. It is built better than my old Marshall MG100HDFX. If you are steering away from this amp because someone is saying it's flimsy and cheaply built, think twice. It's pretty sturdy.
No tubes, unnecessarilly complicated and "Glitchy" was an understatement. The Vypyr 120H has 6L6 power tubes, a 12AX7 preamp tube and makes better sounds, as many sounds My Line6 Vetta HD at half the price........... 'nuff said!

Great Sounding Amp, Not So Reliable

    By Heath Fortenberry

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Great sounding amp for the price, just not reliable enough for gigs.
Lots of built in effects, and the amp models sound really good.
It seems to be built sturdy, but it randomly starts making the most aweful noise, something like the octaver and pitch shifter being on suddenly, even while you are not playing it produces this noise. the only way to stop it is to turn the amp off and back on, and sometimes it takes several times. It's done it on me during several gigs.
Lots of features and tones for the price.

I use this with two Mesa rectifier 2x12 cabs and I love it! I've had it for about 4 months now and the thing is still running strong. I've done a couple gigs with it. No complaints really... Just not built the strongest, but it's great. Literally my dream amp. I like this alot better than the 6505 xD

    I was surprised.

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Normally, I try to stay away from modeling amps and effects processors, we all know what kind of problems those entail. But I was legitimately surprised about just how awesome this amp sounded. The Vypyr tube is pretty incredible. The solid state Vypyr however is a different story, it is an effects processor with a speaker. Which thats cool if you like them, but I dont. The tubes in this amp really bring out the character of the tone and the features are many. The only reason I have it a 4.5 is that it takes some learning to properly work them. This is a great amp with great tones for a great price. Go get one.

    A Great Amp Head

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I got this head about a month ago, and i wish i would have gotten it sooner. I play in a heavy rock band, and it is perfect for my sound! The different amp models let you get a wide variety of sounds. The cleans on this amp are amazing, almost too clean! It is plenty loud enough for any kind of genre. All the different effects you can do on it are perfect, you will never need to spend money on pedals ever again! Great product for a great price, I would recommend this to anyone!

    I Still Feel The Same

    By MetalMan-98khv

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Well, I did a review on this head about 6 months ago and I still feel the same about this head, IT ROCKS!!! Since I first purchased the head, I up-graded the power tubes to JJ's and I swapped out the Valveking speakers in my cab with WGS speakers (mixed set of Veteran 30's and the ET-65's) and it sounds killer, great for all kinds of music. If you need to change up the sound a bit you can use a BBE Sonic Stomp pedal or the MXR ten band eq pedal, this will get you where you need to be. All in all, great head for a great price. I am very pleased...

    Peavey VYPYR 120 HEAD

    By Dave L

    from Iowa

Comments about Peavey Vypyr Tube 120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Well Peavey has done it again! Over some 35 years of being in the music business Peavey has come up with a head that does it all. After playing Rock & Roll for many yeas in my younger days I grow up to playing Country and was looking for a amp with a "clean sound" and boy this one can get clean. In fact it's almost to clean. After getting this in my hands and using a different speaker cabinet with it I purchased a Peavey JSX 412 Slint Cabinet to go with it and boy what a match that was. You can get any sound you want from this head. From country to Metal, just dial it in. Do yourself a favor and go to Peavey's website and download the manual. It makes it easier to understand how to work with this amp. The only thing I found that I didnt' like about this amp is that when you clean the sound up and start adding in effects you seam to lose volume on the output side. I talked to Peavey about this and they told me to run the pregains and the postgains all the way up. I've got a house full of Fender amps and guitars but this Vypyr 120 head along with that JSX cabinet holds it's own! Yes Sir, Peaveys back! If this Vypyr bits you like it did me, you wont be sorry.
