Peavey has good rep for making excellent products. This amp is definitely one of them. With the exception of the plastic corners on the amp and the packaging. The plastic corners are so cheaply made and so brittle. So far, I am on my second amp (awaiting a third exchange from Musician's Friend). The first amp arrived with 4 out of 8 corners broken. The second amp arrived with 3 out of 8 corners broken. Just to give an example of how cheap and brittle the corners are: I was dusting the top of my amp with my hand and one of the plastic corners broke. I was screwing on one of the plastic corners and it disintegrated as the screw got tighter.

I realize that these plastic corners are cosmetic, but still, Peavey needs to step up their quality. I wouldn't be surprised if these amps left the factory already cracked on the plastic corners from the screws.

Bought it used good condition here at MF last fall. Appeared to have been dropped by a shipper on it's corner, but worked fine, also, of course all the other corners were also broken, but, truth is, I don't care about corner protectors. Also, on the speaker magnet, I found a whole handful of wood screws, and having bought other used goods here, I would say it's somewhat of a gamble. Most of the problems happen because items are generally shipped in factory packaging, which is often poor. One of my sons played it for a while at Christmas and he dubbed it a toy, and folks, it really is. I play it for at least an hour a day and enjoy it's various sounds and it's loud enough for the living room messing around, and a guy could play a one man coffee shop thing with it. The sound quality isn't there, mainly because it's way underpowered, so low volumes have no fidelity and higher volumes have no authority, sound somewhat fake. Again, I've still had a lot of fun with it, mostly using the twin and 6505 settings, with the twin being my favorite, by far, (clean twin has nice lows). Half the time, I just use it for a head and feed the modeling into a real amp via the headphone out. Sound quality goes way up, much cleaner and realistic, also the coloration that the peavey speaker is giving it goes away. So I would say that the modeling part of the amp is good, but the rest is very weak. So after playing this a couple of hundred hours, it died. So I took it apart to see what was up, and basically, when you pull out the electronics you readily see that this is a throw away toy, and no way is it made to be repaired. It has two transformers, one is tiny, about the size of the tip of a pinky, and that one had it's plastic frame broken off, heat and vibration, I guess. The other transformer is about the size of 2 tips of thumbs, so small that peavey should be ashamed, also a plastic frame and of course, sitting right smack in the middle of a circuit board, so what happens is that board vibrates and flexes, so, on mine, the solder joints on the board broke. So I resoldered and now it works fine again, and I'm enjoying it, even though it is a toy. I figure it's about 10 watts rms, if that. It is wrong and misleading to label this 40 watts, with the right speaker it would sound great at 40 watts. This thing runs hot, even just using the headphone jack. The heat sink for the two cheap wimpy power transistors is just a chunk of aluminum fastened to the back and center. Folks, that's why the back mdf cover has that tab sticking up oddly over the back of the electronics, because it can heat up enough in a short time to burn you hand. So I now leave the back off mine to help it cool and keep checking it, cause I don't want to fix it again. I like this amp, but feel I paid double what it's worth, even at the used price. I do like MF, will keep getting gear here. I hope other modeling amps are made better than this.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I have found this to be a very versatile practice amp. It sounds good at low volume and with the editing capabilities there hasn't been a guitar sound I haven't been able to imitate. Does it sound as good as some more expensive amps? No, but for this price and what I use it for I have been very happy with it. The only trouble I've had with it is it doesn't want to connect to my PC to use as an interface. I am eager to get the Sanpera 2 foot controller that works with this amp, too bad the pedal is more expensive than the amp, and used pedals seem to be hard to find.
I purchased this as a restock item and one corner bracket was cracked, a common problem, but unimportant. It took me 3 days after buying the amp to even notice it.

I would give this amp 4.5/5 stars.

I play for fun and none of my buddys play music but with my drum machine and looper it is like having a band. I think if you are wanting to learn to play this amp is great. I will never use all the options but it may be great to have once I become a better player.

The amp is reasonably priced but is incomplete without the optional pedal. No way the looper functions without an additional purchase which you aren't aware of until you read the manual that comes with it. Clean and punchy sound.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This is a mostly a copy of my VIP-3 review but applies here, if you choose wisely matching your musical knowledge and skill you will be happy. The VIP 2 is much more user friendly overall so unless you have a vast knowledge of effects boxes and amps you are in for a lot of trial and error. Called Peavey, was told that the possibilities were so vast there was not really any documentation of effects settings that were pre-programed into the amp available. There is not any listing of what the various effects boxes are or what they do. The VIP-1 & VIP-2 when you select a input function you only see the amps and boxes that relate to that input, not so with the VIP-3. Electric, Acoustic or Bass you are presented with the same list of amps and boxes. So unless you are quite knowledgeable or are just a good enough musician where you like to experiment, I would suggest seriously consider the VIP-2 it is much more user friendly. I returned the VIP-3 and bought the VIP-2 much happier even if I though after reimbursing the shipping cost and paying to ship the VIP-3 back the end cost of my VIP-2 was almost the same as the VIP-3. All of the VIP amps are excellent amps but make you choice carefully, weigh you needs and experience. The rating value is a hard choice, if you chose the correct VIP for you knowledge and skill lever, it will be excellent. In my case since I had know idea what most of the effects boxes and amps were and Peavey could not provide me with that information the amp left a lot to be desired. In the manual most of the amps have a brief description in the VIP-2 section but the VIP-3 ads a few more that are not in the manual at all. I repeat make your choice carefully, if you choose the right model for your needs you will be a happy musician. Unless you are sure you absolutely need the 100Watts, buy the VIP 2, Notice when you watch the demos on Peavey's site they show mostly the VIP-2 not the VIP-3, something to think about.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

THE PEAVEY VYPYR VIP SERIES : Was in the market for a small practice amp with nice warm tones and good clean sound and tube over drive. But not looking to spend obscene amounts of money on a 15 watt boutique amp. Did some pretty extensive on line research and was really impressed by what I saw and read and heard about the Peavey Vypyr Series, When I was younger and gigging the club circuits, I was all about the Racks and Stacks and Tube Heads, i.e. Marshall 800, Carvin x-100, Chandler Tube driver, ADA MP-1, Tube Screamer, Distortion +...pretty sure you can guess what decade that was....lol....So I purchased a Used VIP-2 from Musicians Friend with one year warranty and free shipping for One-hundred and fifty dead presidents. Never ordered a amp on line let alone a used one before. Got it today (one of the plastic corner guards was missing- seems this is very common and a constant complaint, hell I saved seventy-five dead presidents off the price of a mint condition amp and mine still had the UPC sticker and the info sheet on the grill and the power cord was still sealed in the bag) Anyway this lil sucker right outta the box, plug in and instant TONE, Check out all the on-line reviews and you tube vids on this amazing amp, (The Tone Kings reviews were especially helpful in my decision, THANK YOU) bang 4 the buck FIVE STARS ! One Wicked Piece of Gear !

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I really wanted a tube amp, but I just don't have the money at this point in my life. So, I did a ton of reserch searching for the best solid state amp with the closest sound quality to a tube amp. It seemed like everyone on the internet said Line 6 Spider, but when I played them in person, they sounded thin and digital. Yeah, they have a ton of presets, but they suck. The Peavy Vypyr Series is pretty amazing though. It might not have all the presets like the Line 6 Spiders, but the sound quality is MUCH better! Even though it isn't quite as good as a tube amp, for under 200, you cannot beat it though. It is the best guitar amplifier for classic rock to heavy metal out there for under 500. Go try one out and see.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This amp is more than what I expected. It has way more edit features than what I will ever use, and the quality of the sound & ability to adjust the tone is amazing. I have no complaints about the quality of the amp, but it did get damaged in shipping transit and I worry about what may have gotten damaged inside. The outside box looked like it had been gorilla tested, the corners of the amp are all broken & fabric is torn. I started to return it, but because I got it under the "free shipping" option coupled with the cost of shipping it back, plus insurance & compliance with the rest of the return policy, it would not be economically feasible. I am better off to use it as it is, hoping it doesn't fail due to the obvious shipping abuse, and replace it as needed. Overall, it is a great versitle amp for bass, acoustic electric or electric guitar.

I have had two of these. Both came with broken corner protectors(not available from peavey until Jan 2014).Good for electric and acoustic guitar.
Both amps were not good for bass as there is a lot of distortion on low bass notes, only good at low volume. I would have liked a smaller cabinet.

I do not recommend this amp for bass players.
