OVERVIEW

A specialty bass comp with blend that focuses your sound like you've never heard.

Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor brings the heralded Philosopher's Tone compressor circuit to bassists in a small size stompbox format. The sustain control on this pedal varies the compression threshold to provide everything from subtle peak limiting to infinite clean sustain, all with incredible low end response. The Philosopher Bass Compressor also sports a compression blend knob, mixing clean tone in parallel with the optical compression. This approach is far more effective than a typical compressor's "attack" control for preserving your natural string envelope to achieve transparent and musical results.

In addition to the wide range analog compression circuit with unrivaled sustain and parallel blend, the Philosopher Bass Compressor's GRIT switch brings in a harmonic distortion tuned especially for low frequency domination. Used with a tube or solid state amp or even straight into a mixing board, DI or DAW, the Philosopher Bass Compressor delivers a new level of control and power to bass players at an affordable price.

The Philosopher Bass Compressor features true bypass switching and runs fine on standard 9-volt power but ships with an 18-volt adapter for superior headroom, clarity, overall output and use with active basses. Never before has so much bass friendly compression been squeezed into such a small package.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Effects Pedal:

I really like this pedal. I have never used a compression pedal for my bass, but am finding the benefits enormous especially for live playing situations. Really helps with dynamics for going from one style and technique in playing to another without having to change amp volume and not worrying about blowing anything out. The difference in sound during some compression settings in so subtle it is not noticeable yet quality and clarity still there. Each individual note is distinguishable in a live mix and no notes are really lost here and there or washed over by the rest of the band. you get some really nice long sustain on notes that can just hang on for ever with some tweaking here and there. Really quiet pedal as well. Overall it lives up to what I thought it would.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Effects Pedal:

I've had this for 2-3 years. I believe the blend function is the key to a great bass compressor. It takes away all the complicated mess of attack and decay nobs that most folks don't really understand anyway. I will say I don't slap- and that's why a lot of people use compressors. With that said, I use it so my highs and notes on the g string don't disappear in relation to lower beefy notes. For this, it's the best I've ever found, because it will do this with zero compressor hiss. If you like the idea, jhs also makes a great type of similar pedal. So why only 4 stars? The grit switch doesn't give you unity volume- it sounds great, but you have to make a volume adjustment in addition to flipping the switch. Otherwise 5 stars.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Effects Pedal:

This is a pedal that will be loved by some, and loathed by others. If you like to run a lot of pedals and you already have a compressor that you like, this may be worth adding to your chain. Having knobs for volume, attack, and sustain, it is not as versatile as some compressors, but once you have it dialed, it has a nice, organic sounding compression to it. I agree with other posters that the grit switch is somewhat useless, I have not found any usable tones with it engaged that fit my style of playing. Where it gets interesting (and what makes it worth having, to me) is when you choke it. Running 9V instead of 18V power gives it a slightly overdriven sound that I absolutely love, and gives it a unique character that sets it apart from other compressors on the market. If you have space on your board, give it a shot. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 mainly because of the grit switch, which I think is a cool idea that didn't translate well.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Effects Pedal:

Bought this to replace another compressor pedal that stopped working. I loved that pedal. So I purchased this one thinking it would do the same stuff as the other one. Boy, was I mistaken. Has no sustain even with the sustain knob all the way to 10. Almost no difference with the pedal off. Compressor doesn't compress in exactly the way my other pedal did, so this is just an opinion. Some people may like the way this one works, but I don't. All in all, lots of cash for a pedal that doesn't do a whole lot. It goes up for sale tomorrow.....

comparing to any model from MXR this is not a compressor , at least not a professional one.
ex all knobs at 12 your attack is wiped out , hights are drastically cut , and the pedal behaves ~ like an expander ... the volume starts low and grows lazy giving the feeling of digital latency

          OK the sustain really works

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor Effects Pedal:

I'm new to using a compressor. This definitely evens out the volume from each string and when I play past the octave. The tone is nice and warm. It's about the same size as most MXR pedals. It only runs on an AC to DC adapter, but that's included. The wall wart isn't super huge like some of them can be. It's not hard to use. A few minutes of tweaking & you should be OK. I have my volume set about 12:00, compression at 3:00, and sustain about 8:00-9:00. More of the sustain knob can possibly mean more noise/hiss, depending on your bass and cables. I tried it on my Epiphone Les Paul bass, G&L JB-2 Tribute, & G&L L2000 Tribute. My setting worked pretty well with all 3 basses.

The only thing I don't care for on this pedal is the distortion or "Grit" switch. I personally don't really care for the way it sounds. No adjustment of the distortion. It's either all on, or off. I probably won't ever use the Grit switch so it's not that big of a deal to me. It wasn't really a factor in my decision to buy this compressor. There are cheaper compressors & more expensive ones than this out there. I'd say this is a good middle option, financially speaking. A lot of times, you get what you pay for.

The build quality is good. The nut on the Grit switch was loose on mine, but a few seconds with needle nose pliers fixed that right away. No biggie. I'll be putting this after my tuner pedal, but before anything else. Most likely for me, this will be always be on when I'm playing.
