This Rat is downright filthy.

The key to Pro Co's You Dirty RAT tone is in its germanium clipping diodes. Any effect pedal aficionado will tell you that nothing compares to the warm tone that these sought-after components provide. This distortion pedal is the perfect middle ground between distortion and fuzz, combining the characteristic cutting RAT tone with the warmth of a classic fuzz-tone.

The You Dirty RAT distortion pedal also provides 3 dB more compression than the original RAT. This not only provides more "tube amp warmth," but ads extra sustain.

The Pro Co You Dirty RAT pedal features the legendary RAT Filter control. Turn it to the right to roll off brittle high-end frequencies. Having trouble cutting through the mix? Turn the Filter down and allow the natural brightness of your instrument to shine through. The Distortion and Volume controls dial in the perfect amount of gain while keeping the level consistent with your clean tone. While there's no mistaking the legendary RAT tone when the guitar pedal is on, true-bypass switching ensures that when the pedal is off, there is no coloration of your sound.

Pro Co Sound has been building professional effects since 1979. Since then, the RAT guitar pedal has evolved from a single, hand-built prototype into a family of versatile distortion pedals.

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Great Pedal. Better than the EHX Bigmuffs and similar pedals. I believe that's because of the GERMANIUM diodes. (They are not transistors, and are extremely stable) They lend a SMOOTHNESS to the sound. Also, it's easier to work with than a Bigmuff, which to work right calls for stage volume thru a marshall stack. I'm not saying that they're bad, it's just that the Rat is easier to work with and it's designed to sound like a fuzz pedal cranking a marshall stack. It's American made! Essentially, it's a rat sound, which by itself is a nice distortion, but it's got this creamy halo of creamy fuzz ... glorious. Excellent note separation. Built like a tank. Very musical sounding, as opposed to silicon transistor pedals which have a more farty, electronic abrasiveness. If you want smooth get this rat! Also, it has nice sustain when turned up, nice compression and limiting if you want it. Enjoy. Oh yeah, made in USA!

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I reviewed this before I had problems with them. I tried 4 times to get a good one and had 2 that didn't work after 3 weeks and 2 that just got so loud and noisey I returned it. I love the sound so much I'm trying a deucetone rat that has the you dirty rat as well as a 2 more rat sounds, hoping the quality is better. Thank you to Musicians Friend for working with me through this with minimal hassle!!!!!

      what can I say.......WOW!!!!!!

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

best sounding distortion I have heard!!!!
Just what the Dr. ordered......I was looking for a distortion that has a range between a tube overdrive and a NYC big muff.........this is it!!! Has the ability to be dialed down to a tube sounding overdrive and can get as much or more distorted than a nyc big muff without as much hum and more control over the bottom end boom via the filter knob......also is more transparent than the big muff......you still hear your gtr's tone through the distortion.....Made in USA........the only bad thing was I had to wait over a month to receive this because it was backordered.....now I know why!!!!!!
built to be forever with a 5 year warranty!!!!!!
I feel it's better than the boutique distortion boxes at half the cost!!!

      The Best Rat

      By EM

      from Central California

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have been a Rat user for years, and own or have owned nearly every version except the very first units produced in the 1970's. The Rat tone is not for everyone, but if you get it you will love it. I think the Dirty Rat may be the best Rat version yet. I use Strats into vintage Fender tube amps, and rely on pedals for thick, medium to high gain tones. The Dirty Rat excels at fat, warm overdriven tones and does produce a nice thick fuzztone at higher settings. The Dirty Rat is smooth and warm thanks to its Germanium diodes, and I find no harsh settings or excessive noise/feedback with my setup. To my ears, sounds like a warmer, slightly fuzzier version of my vintage Rat. The Filter control gives a wide array of tones and really helps you to sit just right in the mix without being too harsh or too muddy. I set the Dirty Rat for medium gain (10:00 to 12:00) and push it over the top with a Boss SD-1 for leads. Very toneful, very warm, and natural sounding. Great for blues, fusion, and classic rock. This pedal is still made in the USA and is extremely well built. I wish it had a bit more output available, but the pedal really works fine as-is. I use the Dirty Rat with a Fulltone Mini Deja-Vibe, a Boss SD-1, and a Boss DD-3 for blues, classic rock, and Eric Johnson-ish tunes. Based on my experience, I think the Dirty Rat is a fantastic value and worth trying if you want something different than your standard overdrive or distortion.

      UGLIEST DESIGN EVER

      By Anonymous

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I would like to meet the geniuses at Proco who designed this terrible housing. It just doesn't make sense why they would place the knobs so close to the footswitch as if our feet were the size of a 5-year-old girl. The height of the knobs doesn't help either. It just sucks because I want this sound, but I am thinking about switching to another pedal soon because these knobs can easily be kicked by accident, changing your settings! I mean it just sucks to be on stage and in the middle of a song, having to focus so much on carefully stepping on the small area where the switch is - Does not look cool on stage! This issue could easily be resolved by placing a "guard" or small wall in front of the knobs, where your foot could not easily come into contact with the knobs. The knobs could also be a little smaller with A LOT less height so that, again, things do not come into contact with them so easily. Look at the way BOSS pedals are designed. They just make more sense. I love your sound, Proco, but why the stupid design?

Too much feedback at hi dist levels

      By Anonymous

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Got a fender strat (jap made with floyd bridge and dimarzio hb's)throuy an ac30hh with matching cab and whenever I turn the tone up on the axe the thing wields an atrocious feedback even on medium settings (the filter really dulls the sound making it less punchy). This gets even worse when I switch to pentode mode on my amp on a clean setting. Asked my fellow axeman to try it out cos it could be from my guitar (he uses an'09 Gibson SG)but turns out it wasn't.You get what you pay for. I recommend handmade OD/Dist pedals from the likes of love pedal, jetter, fulltone. Always great quality but for a price. In the business you get what you pay for.

      So Sick

Comments about Pro Co You Dirty Rat Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was looking for a good fuzz/distortion pedal. I looked at every brand and type at my local music store. Nothing else gave me the range of tones, the brightness, and control that this pedal did. I play a fender strat through a Dunlop Wah pedal, into the Dirty Rat, into a Boss Looper. All of this goes strait into my Tweed Peavy Classic 30. It gives plenty of tone and control to go around.
