OVERVIEW

Hard-rocking tone with Celestion flavoring.

The Archon 50 50W 1x12" guitar combo continues Archon's promise of delivering full, lush gain while offering a clean channel that players of all genres will appreciate. With 50 watts, switchable to 25 via the amp's back panel, the Archon 50 breaks up at a lower volume, resulting in a more classically driven tone than its predecessor.

The added option of 6L6 or EL34 power tubes allows player sto further personalize the tone and feel of the Archon 50. 6L6 tubes offer plenty of versatility and warmer, more balanced tone across the full range of frequencies. They will also push with less saturation for a bit of a sweeter, smoother tone. EL34 tubes offer focused, tight, punchy gain. They run a little hotter, distort earlier and deliver a wider range of overdriven, crunch tones that are great for rock distortion.

Comments about PRS Archon 50W 1x12 Guitar Tube Combo Amp:

I think this is the best amp I have ever owned. If you are in the market for a JCM 800 style combo, I'd steer away from the current Marshall combos and get this instead. The build quality is head and shoulders above any modern Marshall combo, and the sound quality is there too. This is a high gain two channel amp that can use either 6l6 tubes or el34 tubes. Not surprisingly, the clean channel sounds a little better with 6l6 tubes and the high gain channel is a little nicer with el34 tubes. The amp has a full set of controls (volume, master, treble, middle & bass) for each channel, so it is easy to dial in the sound you want. If you want a Marshall combo but are unhappy with the cheap pcb board construction of those amps, then this is what you are looking for. For my money, it is the most reasonably priced well made giggable high gain amplifier you can buy.

Comments about PRS Archon 50W 1x12 Guitar Tube Combo Amp:

This is a follow up to my earlier review. I still love the amp. In fact I like it so much I'd consider buying another one, so I could use two on stage. After I got it I opened it up I realized this amp is pretty much all hand wired. The bias is also easy to check. It was a little cold so I warmed it up, and it sounds even better. I replaced the Ruby Tube 6l6's with Groove Tube El34's. The clean tone isn't quite as good but the overdrive channel is great with el34's. The 12AX7's in the amp are JJ Tesla ECC83's; I like those and left them in. As for the speaker, I wasn't wild about the Celestion G12T-75 at higher volumes (it was a little harsh and there wasn't enough bass), so I switched to a Celestion C12k-100 and that made all the difference. This is a great amp. Those changes weren't necessary, I just like to tinker with everything. Maybe someday Marshall will make a combo like this. Until then I'm sticking with PRS!!!
