OVERVIEW

A gig-ready head with serious sound for a sweet price.

Huge sound in a smaller package is the best way to describe the RX120RH from Randall's RX Series. The RX tone circuits are designed to achieve the modern Randall tone that delivers plenty of tight lows as well as enough top end sizzle to satisfy any metal monster. The result is an overwhelming sound that may change your definition of the modern amp. Built-in spring reverb.

Overall, I would highly recommend this amp. I purchased this amp as a backup to my main tube rig and for home practice. I am one of those performing guitarists who tempted fate for many years - I never used a backup amp. Well, last year fate caught up with me as I watched the catastrophic meltdown of all four of my power tubes just before the gig was to have started. Fortunately, I was sharing the stage with another band and their guitar player was kind enough to let me use his amp. The failure of my main rig is the reason for the purchase of the solid state Randall head.

I have three other amps, but they are all tube amps and I figured I'd go ahead and acquire a solid state amp (just in case). As we all know, solid state amps are more mechanically reliable than tube amps (a fact of life). While the Randall RX120RH amp does not give me the same tones as my VERY EXPENSIVE tube rig, it will get me through the night in the event of another tube related failure. Well done, Randall Amps.
The features are what you'd expect from a solid state amp head; 2 truly independent channels, master volume, level control for each channel, and built-in reverb. The channel selection and reverb are footswitch controllable (2-button footswitch included). The best feature of this amp is the separate EQ section for each channel. I have owned many different amps over the years and I can say that I am not a fan of the shared EQ section for two channels.
I have owned other Randall amps in the past. If this one is like its predecessors, it should hold up just fine for many years.

As for tonal quality; the overdrive channel is quite good, especially if you use your volume pot on your guitar. The overdrive channel is very responsive to guitar input - roll the guitar volume back for less distortion, roll it up for all out sonic assault.

If I were to pick on anything, it would have to be the clean channel. The tone is a bit harsh and "barky" but, add a little reverb and the clean tones become a little more pleasing. However, out-of-phase single coil pickups sound very good through the clean channel.
This amp is a very good buy in this price-point. I have checked out other amps in this same price range and find this one to be a steal at this price. Believe me, I researched this amp (and others) thoroughly before I made this purchase.

I bought the rx120rh head in a combination with the 4x12 cab and I immediately did not like the distortion tone on it. The clean channel was nice, and the reverb on it was decent, but the distortion sounded incredibly weak and very muddy. Without a really good pedal, the distortion on this amp will come up short. The cab that goes with it is fantastic though. I was disappointed with the tone, but with a good pedal it could work. You really get what you pay for.

Great Amp

Comments about Randall RX Series RX120RH 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I got this amp for my birthday...and I really like it...Both channels are great, you can get a wide variety of sounds from Clapton to Pantera of course,But the Overdrive channel is weird its not weak but its a crunch tone until the gain knob is at about 7 then it's just blow your head off distortion,Just do a little tweaking on the other knobs and it will sound fine for a good rock tone...I play Hard Rock stuff like Alter Bridge or Black Stone Cherry,So i don't need a metal type gain anyways. So it gets the job done for me. It's well worth the money...I have seen other reviews saying "Its hard to dial in a good tone on the overdrive channel". Its not hard if you know what your doing. The clean channel is great all around the knobs can all be at 1 and it will sound good. You can do whatever you want to it and it will sound good. I put a 3.5 for "Features" because there's really nothing special on it, it's real easy to use, just the standard things for an amp...5.0 for quality because this thing is as sturdy as it gets.I like the Reverb, but I wish there was a LED to tell whether it was on or off because I don't really use a lot of reverb, I like it on like 2...so you can hear it but faintly. This amp is still great for a solid state,I think Randall makes the best. Well that's about it I would recommend this amp to anyone but make sure you play it first because a lot of people are picky...I'm not I figured I'd just give it a shot and I made a good choice. Hopefully this helps...email me if you have any other questions.

I got this head and a 4x12 cab as a pair about 2 years ago. At first I couldnt get a good sound outta the od channel to save my life. But about a year ago I finaly found a pretty good sound for my playing. But unfortunetly the gain is just alittle weak, it sounds awsome just not enough there. The clean channel is just awsome, period. Its got good sounds all over. the amp is very loud. The reverb is nice as well. Its a great first stack. I found the tone I want with it and hope I can dial the sound I get with this thru my b-52 stealth I got...

Comments about Randall RX Series RX120RH 120W Guitar Amp Head:

The sound out of this amp is pretty good for solid state, but where this really shines is with a multi fx unit. I run an RP500 into it and it sounds terrific. Lots of power and very well built. I would (and do) put this setup against players running expensive tube amps, and I generally prefer my tone for most applications.

I play rock-metal... bought this for $255 on ebay.... was worried I might have wasted my money...but instantly fell in love with this amp.... its well worth the 255 i spent on it. Everything is great on it.... except I wish the reverb was just a little more powerful.

Comments about Randall RX Series RX120RH 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This is exactly what I was looking for in an amp head, in an affordable unit. I have been a longtime Randall player, and this has not disappointed me. The closest I have been able to get to that signature Randall tone was using a Blackstar 100W tube head that costs around a grand.

You can dial in tones ranging from Metallica to Pantera, and from Accept to Leeway. It is perfect for any metal player. The spring reverb is a lovely little enhancement. Also, with 120W of solid-state power... this thing is LOUD. I use it with a Randall 2x12 cabinet and it is perfect for any live setting. I cannot recommend this enough!

Comments about Randall RX Series RX120RH 120W Guitar Amp Head:

When it comes to guitar amps, two things usually are associated to bad products: Solid State and Low Cost. However, this Randall is a real wolf under a ship skin.
Yes it's solid state, yes it's made in China, yes it's 120 watts, yes it's one of the best Randall products all around.
I've been using this amp for about 6 years, originally I bought to use it at live shows in small venues. You know, it's not very expensive so I wouldn't feel terribly bad if got stolen or broke down. But what a surprise! It has an awesome sound. The best of this amp is the clean channel. I plug my pedal board directly into the input and man, it's there. The sound of my pedals clear and loud. The reverb is a jewel, beautiful and natural. The 3 band eq works perfectly and gives you a lots of tonal control.
The distortion is pretty good but unfortunately is not very loud. When playing trough the clean channel you have all that glory and power but the distortion channel is just like a pale shade of it.
The construction is very strong as well as the 4×12 cab.
This amp makes sense, is not very expensive and delivers great Randall sound and power.
