OVERVIEW

A 1968 Plexi Amp crammed into a simple-to-use, great-sounding pedal.

The Animal is Rockett's recreating of a 1968 Plexi Sound. The Animal is an extremely open and amp like sound that can get you from a stock plexi to a modified plexi with the flick of the snarl switch. The Animal can get very aggressive but it is by no means a distortion pedal, just think of a cranked plexi and how open and natural it sounds. Gotta love this pedal!

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Was looking for something to help get closer to that Marshall sound with my Peavey Classic 30 & Classic 50. This pedal does a very good job of that. I was hoping for just a bit more gain at the max settings, but if you use this as a 'rhythm' type drive pedal and then push it with a boost or second OD pedal it will go over the edge with no trouble. What this pedal does very well is stay... "musical" is probably the best term I've heard to describe it; even at higher gain settings chords stay clear and articulate. The only real gripe with this pedal is it does so many sounds and drive levels so well, you wish for 2 or 3 set up for different sounds. As one reviewer mentioned, it would be awesome if the "snarl" switch were set up as a second foot switch so you could go back and forth as needed. All in all a very high quality pedal that will give you many great sounds. As Lee Anderton said in his review "that's just basically a make nice dirty noises pedal". I agree.

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is absolutely great, it has a great feel between vintage and modern that I really, really like! Let me explain...By vintage, I mean this pedal has the low-end sag and feel of vintage pedals/amps that makes lead work absolutely fantastic, it gets mean without being harsh. It's modern in the sense that it is much more flexible than your everyday tube screamer, with added clarity, gain and a switchable mid-boost. With the "snarl" switch off, the pedal gives an "off-clean" sound I've personally been looking for for along time, that can simply add shimmer and complexity to a clean amp. Engage the "snarl" switch and it turns the pedal into more or less a hot-rodded tube screamer, that has LOADS of harmonics that just turns into singing lead.

That said, it's a really versatile overdrive, it matches very well actually with my DRRI, and could easily be an "always on" pedal just because it has such a great quality in it's clean signal & harmonic content. I compared this to the "blue note" by J Rockett and it simply blew it out of the water, I really didn't like the "harsh" attack of the blue note, whereas the Animal's sag perfectly compliments the headroom the pedal has. I didn't even desire a "plexi sound", nor do I, I bought this pedal because it sounded, and sounds great.

My only complaint it the noise when the snarl switch is on, but also I have single-coils so that's obviously a factor. But that said, the snarl switch also boosts volume, so you can adjust the volume to mitigate some of the noise introduced by that switch engaged.

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

"Marshall" tones are almost enigmatic. So many amps, so many pedals, so many recordings....
It comes down to this: Playing your guitar through this pedal into a decent quality amplifier will give you things you've been wanting for years.
I've played my animal through an Egnater Tweaker to a vintage Yamaha G50-112 solid state, to a Pro Jr., to Dr. Z Remedy and Maz heads. I've owned or borrowed just about everything that appealed to me in the least bit. I've found what I've been looking for all these years.
Capable of everything from JTM, Plexi, and JMP cleans, to edge of breakup through each of those, to JCM800, to Silver Jubilee singing mids, to higher gain sounds, it's all in there.
My favorite is to use a unity gain approach, starting with the volume and gain on the pedal both at noon, and dial my Remedy channel volumes and master at noon as well, and then tweak the signal with adjustments on either side of noon until I get the "spot" that gives me cleans, crunch, and gain, under my fingertips.
This is the most touch sensitive pedal I've ever owned (along with the Rockett Blue Note and Rockett Chicken Soup), yielding clean passages by reducing pick attack, and even more dialing your guitars volume down, tone is INTACT!!
I occasionally use an Xotic EP boost to raise the volume level and girth for certain solo passages.
Slide guitar? WOW!! This pedal is loaded with harmonics and sustain.
I cannot say enough about the pedal. There is as much mystery and adventure lurking in this pedal as there is in a real vintage Marshall. It retains the best tone under all circumstances.
      I cannot recommend it enough.

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've gone through about 10-15 Marshall-style pedals to find the right sound. This one is it. It may not do high gain metal tones, but for mid to low gain sounds, this pedal is simply fantastic. While my humbucker-equipped SG sounded very good, I found this pedal especially well suited to my single coil guitars. P90s sounded great, but is seems tailor-made for a Tele.

As an aside, I don't think the videos on youtube do it justice, even the well produced ones. I was surprised by the sound when I tried it in person.

The only minor gripe is that it can get a little noisy at higher gain settings, and depending on your power supply - I find it's more sensitive to the quality of the supply than my other pedals for some reason. Over all, this is not really a concern for me.

Can't say enough good things about this pedal, really.

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I selected the Animal Overdrive after reading many of the stellar reviews on the internet and I am very please with my purchase. Rockett claims that the Animal is an authentic take on a 1968 Marshall Plexi and the pedal delivers on that promise. Lots of headroom while maintaining your guitar's string to string definition even at the highest gain settings. Unlike some other "plexi" style pedals, the Animal does not bump up the mid-range frequencies too much which I like. I use it through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III. Really the most versatile overdive I have used. Very organic, natural sounding, with the tube like sag of a classic Marshall. I highly recommended this product.

Comments about Rockett Pedals Animal Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have used many pedals claiming Plexi in a box.
This is the 1 that delivers, It's big and open just like a real plexi. I use this pedal with a Durango Guitar Works Iron Horse 24" short scale into a Fender HRDX and a Marshall DSL15c and the tone is jaw dropping. I can easly get any plexi tone you can imagine, The who, Van Halen you name it. Turning the gain knob past 2:30 you start to notice the sustain and it just gets better the the farther you go. I am so happy with this pedal.
