Rocktron sound the way it was meant to be heard.

The Rocktron S-112 Speaker Cab has a ported design for focused low-end response and unique trapezoidal design avoids midrange notching. This means you will not lose your tone in the mix. In fact, your tone will jump out at you with unmatched clarity! The Rocktron S-112 offers the most balanced frequency response of any 1 x 12 cabinet. The cabinet houses Rocktron's specially designed 12" speaker, developed after numerous comparison tests with many of today's best speakers.

The Rocktron Velocity S-112 speaker with all of the warmth and cut needed by today's players. A recessed handle and light weight (27 lbs.) allows ease of portability. The Rocktron speaker can be placed on its side like an angled (or monitor) cabinet, or stacked in an array fashion for an even spread across the stage eliminating "holes".

I ordered a pair of these and one was bad. It made a funny buzzing sound but the other one sounded quite good. I returned the bad one for ANOTHER and it too was making it's own weird buzzy rattling sound as well. So then I sent THIS ONE back and yes - third time was a charm. These are very good sounding guitar cabs once you get a good working one (or pair). I'm running mine through a Rocktron Prophesy into a Mesa 50/50 is stereo and they are excellent sounding speakers IMHO. Very full, very fat and present. Incredible low end response. I find I need to roll off some of the low end, but once you dial that in they give a great "stack" sound for a wide variety of clean and driven tones for ANY electric style. Highly recommended from a full time gigging & recording pro of 30+ years.

I think these would be better for bass. They have tons of bass. I had to max my treble and cut the bass to to anything. I'm used to the 4-12" sound. The Rocktron Velocity seems to have a mid-cut and is sort of "HIFI" sounding. I can't use it for guitar. I got these because my 4-12" cab will not go in my car. Instead I'm using two Peavey conventional 1-12" cabs, they are wider than most 1-12" cabs and the two of them get close to the 4-12" sound. I repeat the Rocktorns are very bassy with a mid cut and have very little treble. For that reason a heavy metal player might like them if he wants a small speaker but they sound NOTHING like the conventional 4-12".

Followup Review - 4 Years later

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

I'm doing a followup review just to mention a few things I've learned about these over the years.

First of all, I still use & like these as much as I did 4 years ago.

However, I have had 3 mishaps where I've broken the plastic handles clean off the tops of the cabs. Which of course means they also fell to the ground semi-violently. I'm happy to report that both cabs still sound & work great, but they are a pain to carry w/o that handle. I've always been able to get a replacement from Rocktron, but this last time they were back ordered and it took longer than it had previously. Still, I gotta' give props to the folks at Rocktron for what I consider top notch customer service.

Now - when fixing these handles I believe I figured out where these bloody rattling sounds (mentioned in my earlier review) were coming from. There are lock washers that are supposed to secure the handle from the inside of the cab via the screws. I found one of these lock washers had come out and was stuck on the speaker magnet. If one of these landed up against the cone inside the speaker frame it could easily make all kinds of noise and damage the cone. I made sure all of mine were secure in both cabs, but I think this might explain the two I had to send back. You get one of these floating around inside the cab and I bet it would sound a lot like the two I sent back.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

It took me awhile to figure out how to use these, but once I did, all I can say is "wow." Running a Digitech 2120 through a Carvin Tube 100 with 6L6s in it and a couple of "Tube Tamers" through a pair of these and mic them with a couple of low end condenser mics. These things sound fantastic recorded, and allow for a diverse array of great tones at relatively low volumes. They are also fairly easy to isolate, so I get a good representation of them through my studio monitors.

At first I thought that they were too mid rangy, but that is before I recorded them. I don't like their sound on their own much, but they record very well. Getting the right tone is a matter of moving the mic around until you find the sweet spot.

            Update from years ago.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

With all the features for the price it's a no-brainer imo. Plus they sound good to boot.
I reviewed this cab a long time ago....possibly on another site. My two cabs have been stellar and sound better now[after break-in]. For the people that have complained about "rattle" I can say that the metal grille on one of my two cabs did do exactly that but was easily remedied and I have put 75 watts[what they're rated] and then some through them over 5+ years of usage. These speakers are light with a small footprint as well as arrayable. Not only that....they offer you the ability to ADD as well as SUBTRACT impedance when adding cabs[key for tube amps] as you need for venues of various sizes by offering series vs parrallel[or a combination of] connectivity no matter how many cabs you use. The trapezoid design coupled with tuned porting allows them to breathe while cancelling out room node and cabinet resonances inherant to other cabs. Very easily equalised to any setting whether it be for blues, rock, or beyond.
9 out of 10 for the grille rattle on one of the two. Easily fixed.
Hard to beat for the money. Trapezoid, portable, arrayable, impedance friendly, modular.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

First of all, my philosophy with gear is pretty by-the-book. You don't get 412 cabs and hundreds of watts to power them until you're playing in front of thousands of people in a wide open venue that requires that kind of sound. (Studio recording is the exception.) Amps like to be played quite open, and a pair of these for a stereo setup is plenty for home and small venues! I got rid of a good 412 cab and got these. I really like the sound from these speakers, and if I swapped them out for particular Patriots the difference wouldn't be huge--great tone! The design's versatility is great, too. I tend to keep mine on the side angled up. The bass ports are cool and definitely sound like they project deeper lows than a standard cab. The only problem is that one of the two finally developed that rattle--my rattle is in the grille--when certain notes on the sixth string are played (mid bass) and Jim from Rocktron wasn't sure how to fix it. I'm trying to figure it out myself. I plan on getting two more of these to get the most out of my Velocity 100. 110 watts @ 4 ohms per side and four drivers? PLENTY LOUD for the next several years of my life!

Okay,I've had a pair of these for about 6 months now and I am in love. I mean I completely agree withe the reviewer complaining about the vinyl covering, but hey! Look at the price.I won't even knock it down for that because bottom line the sound is just how I like it. Very resonsive to what ever I put through it. I have the big gig rack with a Carvin Tube 100 and Alembic preamp and it has yet to fail to handle the power. I also use them with my small gig set up which is a Crate Power Block and little Korg multi effects pedal. Sounds so good I can't believe it. But that get's back to the responsiveness thing I was talking about. They just seem to give every detail in such incredible warmth and (yes) punch. In your face. I'm a bonafied low end freak and I have never owned speakers that I felt like,Whoa!,that might be too much. Okay, except when I used to schlep a Peavey 18"bass reflex cabinet around for a sick bi-amped effects fest.Trust me,these guys are WAY easier to transport. And that counts.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

I bought this cabinet new to use with my Epiphone Valve Jr. Head. For about the first year I was very pleased with it. My ?mini stack? had very good tone. The cabinet had very good tone and projection with other heads as well. After about a year, however, it developed a really bad speaker/cabinet rattle, which was so bad it rendered it useless. It would rattle even at a low volume. Perhaps I got a lemon, but I wouldn?t recommend it due to its reliability. When it was working fine without any rattles, it had very good sound though.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

I was really tired of the years of headaches my 4x12 cabinets had given me... let's see:1) damn heavy2) the ones that sound good are expensive3) people seem to think the expensive ones make good places to put beers on stage4) On a small stage, a 4x12's sound hits you in the back of the legs, meaning that while you are barely hearing yourself, you are causing a seismic event across the room. So with some reservations I got a pair of these, thinking that they would solve these problems and I could EQ out any tone problems that came up.Wrong. These sounded better than just about any 4x12 under they "boutique" mark that I've heard. In fact, and some may scoff at this, I A/B'd them against my Marshall JCM800 cab in my studio and I liked these better. These cabs really have a great midrangy guitar tone, and I love them.I don't know if I ended up with a lighter, more portable rig though, as I carry four of them around...

            Better than expected

Comments about Rocktron Velocity S-112 Speaker Cabinet:

It seems to me like bands with just one guitar player are becoming an endangered species. I'm in a actively gigging club band as a solitary guitar player and hate not getting a decent monitor mix. This product allowed me to due away with the sound guy. I play a Mesa Triple Rec half stack with eminence speakers in a 4x12. I pre purchased the same eminence speakers for the two rocktron cabs I bought, but since I've received them, I decided to keep the stock speakers in. That's how good they sound. The ONLY complaint I have is that these are not carpet covered. Carpet is the only material that is tough enough for gigging. How did tolex and vinyl get so popular? Buy these and you won't be disapointed.
