Rogue

A compact amp with a broad sound.

The Rogue SC40R guitar amp delivers a true stereo chorus sound in one compact package with 2-channel switching between a clean and overdriven sound and built-in reverb.

For years, guitarists have appreciated the bigger sound that adding a chorus effect brings. The problem with effect pedals though is they can't deliver a true stereo sound unless you've got two amps.

The Rogue SC40R solves that problem by incorporating a true stereo chorus in its preamp section and then pushing the effected sound through 2 high-fidelty 8" speakers. Whether it's for jazz or rock, a stereo chorus effectively doubles your guitar sound, making it fuller and more interesting for all styles of music. The tone-shaping controls are extensive in the Rogue SC40R with mid-frequency adjustment that can pinpoint the exact tone you're looking for. The Rogue SC40R also has controls for dialing in reverb and distortion making it an amp that really can cover it all.

The Rogue SC40R includes an input for connecting a dual footswitch to trigger the stereo chorus or switch between channels. There's also an 1/8" stereo connection for MP3 or CD players and a headphone out for practicing without waking up the neighbors.

Features

  • Compact size

  • Gain control for overdrive
  • 3-band EQ with mid-frequency adjustment
  • Built-in reverb

The semi parametric mid band on the eq affords a tremendous amount of flexibility in tone shaping. Using the 'volume' control on the clean channel allows you to dial in a variety of different clean sounds. If you keep it low, this amp works quite well for amplifying acoustic guitars. Cranking up the volume brings a wetter, fender like clean tone. Naturally, you can dial in anything in between. The distortion channel is great and just as flexible. If you mess with the gain and eq, you can achieve classic overdrive sounds as well as fairly high gain metal sounds. The sustain is great. It also cleans up well when you roll down the volume knob on your guitar. Putting a tube screamer in front of this channel can easily push this amp into monstrous, violent, grindcore territory similar to the old Ampeg SS and VH series amps, but with more sustain and tonal flexibility. The reverb is a bit odd, but useful. It seems to have a lot of early reflections with a short decay. I pretty much leave it on ~2 and feel it helps thicken the sounds I get out of both channels. It also serves to add more depth to the chorus. The chorus itself is decent. It's noisy, and a little quiet, but fun to play with nonetheless. Taking the price into consideration, then I feel that a '10' is warranted here.
Two channels, 3 band eq with semi parametric mid band, reverb, chorus and 40 watts into two 8"' speakers. What's not to like?
This is a solid little amp. The construction is rugged and well though out. The tolex work is excelent, considering the price, There are two sharp corners near the controls that could be a little cleaner, but they're not sloppy by any stretch of the imagination. I have not fully put the speakers on this through their paces yet, as I am only using this for low volume practice, but they sound suprisingly good at low levels. However, I have no idea how well they hold up when the amp is cranked.
This little guy is a great deal at the normal asking price. It's a no brainer at any sale price.

I have to give this amp a "middle of the road" overall score because the reverb and chorus is, in my opinion, simply terrible. The 'verb is very tinny sounding and the tail breaks up at the end of the decay. Activating the chorus feature introduces a fair amount of noise. The chorus itself is not a bad sounding effect, but the fact that noise is added when in use knocks some points off the score.

On the other hand, I think the "distortion" channel is very effective. I don't get the tone I find with my Deluxe Reissue and a Tube Screamer, but I still like what the Rogue has to offer. The sweepable mid-frequency control in the EQ is a real nice feature. Nearly infinite tonal possibilities are at my disposal with this knob.

I played both single coil guitars and guitars with humbuckers through the Rogue SC40R to mutually satisfying results. I especially liked the sound of running the humbuckers through the distortion channel. Running the single coils of my luthier built Tele through the clean channel was also nice.

One quirk I noticed which I think is worth mentioning... I was having a hard time getting a clear signal in the clean channel. I spent a fair amount of time playing around with the controls because I couldn't get rid of the faint buzzing sound. At first I was worried that is was speaker buzz, despite the fact that I "broke in" the speakers for 24 hours while running an mp3 player at low to medium volumes... turns out I was experiencing channel bleed, as I had the distortion channel gain up all the way while playing through the clean channel. Turning down the gain in the distortion channel gave me a clean, clear sound out of the other channel. Go figure. Easy remedy, but is not desirable if you plan on switching channels in mid-song while wanting a heavy crunch AND a super clean sound available.

Overall (as this category is called) I am quite pleased with the purchase. It won't be my go-to amp, and honestly, I probably wouldn't have bought it if it didn't jump out at me off the Stupid Deals of the Week page, but it is what it is... a feature packed combo amp at a decent price. I would recommend this amp to a beginner guitarist or to an experienced guitarist wanting an inexpensive backup or practice amp, especially so if it is offered again at the "stupid deal" price.
As a 2x8, 2 channel combo amp with 'verb, chorus, and 3-band EQ with a sweepable mid, I'd say the Rogue SC40R is PACKED with features for the price. Channel switching and chorus on/off is possible with an optional footswitch, which is handy.
Build quality on the Rogue SC40R seems nice, though I worry about the lengivity of the pcb mounted mp3 and headphone jacks. The input and footswitch jacks are chassis mounted, as are all the rotary pots, so there should be no worries there. Aesthetically, I think it is an attractive amp with the top mounted controls giving the front a clutter free look. It feels solid, but I haven't gigged with it to see how it holds up to the gigging lifestyle.
I purchased this amp when it showed up under the stupid deals of the week. I figured I couldn't go wrong paying this much for a combo amp. I also own a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue, a Vox AC4TV and an old Ampeg Mercury amp, so with that said, this Rogue is my only solid state amp, which makes for a nice backup should any or all of my tube amps start to act up. The SC40R is a stupendous deal at the price and probably worth the regular price.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:

amp cracks, pops, scratches, everthing except gives a clear sound. Im glad I bought this on a lark. I bought my son a Rouge electiic/acoustic for cheap and it is one of the nicest playing guitars in the house. I took a chance on this amp hoping it would be the same. But im not upset, after all you get what you pay for. It would have been asking a lot if this amp delivered everything it was built for. the amp itself is built very sturdy and looks good to. So I have another prodject to add to my music room to work on someday.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:

First, I should point out that I'm strictly a bedroom player, and I only play clean with a touch of reverb. I'll never use the distortion channel and probably only mess around a little with the chorus. That said, this amp is exactly what I've been looking for. The cleans are clear and sparkly and, contrary to some other reviews, the reverb on mine works fine. As others have said, the "Frequency" knob, which adjusts what frequency will be affected by the MID knob,is a fantastic feature. The amp is totally silent when you're not playing (no hum or buzz) and the controls all feel solid and work as they're supposed to. I play a Telecaster through it and it sounds great.

I've been on a several-year quest to find a good practice amp. I've owned just about every small amp on the market, including several modeling amps and a bunch of the 5-watt tube amps. This is my favorite by far. It's even nicer when you can get it when it goes on sale (which it seems to do periodically.) I'm totally happy with this amp.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:

This is a very warm solid state amp that is able to be flat power for amp simulators and good tone with pedals. I was surprised at how long I sat playing it when I set this up for my 11 year old. There is enough character in this amp ,when plug directly into it,to allow expression to flow. From those little "Amp Plugs" to a "Zoom G5" this little thing projected the simulated sounds with ease and clarity. This company has that affordable but charming air to their lines. Great job Rogue!

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp as the Stupid Deal of the Day. A ridiculously inexpensive stereo chorus amp was too tempting to pass up, but I wasn't sure what I'd get. I was pleasantly surprised.

The clean channel is solid, clean, and clear. The dirty channel is not what I would necessarily call bad but I prefer the sound of either my overdrive pedal or my multi-effects pedal and I can't really fault the amp for that.

The chorus and reverb are more subtle than I expected, but that's not to say they don't work. When they are engaged they don't really stand out but as soon as they're turned off it's fairly apparent that something's gone missing. I haven't noticed any significant hiss or noise that could be attributed to the reverb or chorus or, for that matter, the amp itself.

The midrange boost/cut and frequency controls are very useful in shaping the sound. Moderately boosted at certain frequencies, the mids seem to interact with the reverb such that the reverb "rings" or resonates with what is being played (somewhat akin to the sound of feedback, but more fleeting and more musical), which is a pretty cool effect in my opinion.

I bought the amp with the intention of using the "MP3 IN" connection for a multi-effects pedal (Vox ToneLab EX). This definitely works, but again, not quite as expected, since none of the volume controls on the amp control the volume of this input. Things connected to this jack come through full-blast and the only way to control the volume is by cutting it back on the connected device. Despite connecting the ToneLab in this way being the main reason I bought it, I have found myself really enjoying just playing through the amp itself using only an overdrive pedal.

The amp seems very solid. It's not rickety by any means, and all of the controls have a nice, sturdy feel to them. I haven't turned it all the way up yet (it's LOUD and I don't live alone) but as far as I have turned it, it hasn't rattled or anything.

I gave it 5 stars based on value for the money. It's not the best amp out there, obviously, but I can't really find anything bad to say about it. It is what it is, and I kinda like it.

I have been looking for a compact practice amp with great sound and reasonable pricing. I first came across the Fender frontman 25R which is an awesome amp for beginners and great for practicing at home but still not quite powerful enough and the sound, i felt, was a little basic. I came across the rogue SC40R at my cousins music shop. it was just brought in by a kid that needed gas money and as soon as i played through it, trying both channels and various tones, this was the ONE!!! was it by chance? i call it destiny!

I just wanted to say something good about rouge amps they last. my 100watt two channel and stack amp has served my needs for 14 years without any repair. And Musicians Friend has been a friend to me. I've puschased from there stores for less than I have paid for gear in the 80s and they always take good care of me. My behringer amp has been a pain in ### since I bought it. one of the effects went out shortly after I bought it and now when you have it on a while it cuts out. My rouge amps fill up the room with more volume at the same wattage more than other amps I've owned. I'm getting the chorous amp for practice at home And how can you miss if you look at the coupons they have out there online any problems call that number and they take good care of you. returns abreeze shipping fast. can"t get a better deal on ebay than you can here for new stuff.

I've been playing for a long time (40+ years), and I've owned/played/tried a lot of amps in a lot of situations. I have a Fender tweed, a nice Crate class A, a Jet City all tube, along with a few other various hybrid and solid state amps, all of which I bought for a reason and like, but if I needed cash and could only keep one amp: this would be the one. And what puts the sound of this amp over the top is that midrange parameter knob. The range of sounds that can come from just tweaking that one little knob is amazing. I haven't tried running this into my 4X12 yet, but it's gonna be good. Given the size, weight, simplicity and price, esp when it's a deal of the day, this is a no brainer to add to your collection. Whether it's the first amp in that collection or the 10th, it's worth having there.
