OVERVIEW

Small yet lethal, affordable yet powerful!

The Roland CUBE-20XL guitar combo amp continues to push the envelope of innovative amp technology and design, just as its CUBE predecessors have done before it. The Roland CUBE-20XL delivers 20 watts through a high-performance 8" custom speaker. Its compact size is perfect for at-home practice and band rehearsals alike, and it's conveniently portable.

The CUBE-20XL offers two channels, JC Clean and Lead, plus Solo mode for extra boost when needed. Six BOSS Lead types are provided, including the new Extreme setting, along with nine powerful effects including Heavy Octave, COSM vintage Spring Reverb. The Power Squeezer mode delivers full gain at low volume. An aux input allows portable music players to be connected for jam-along fun, while the onboard Tuning Fork lets you tune your guitar without unplugging.

Dual Channels
The CUBE-20XL offers two switchable channels: JC Clean and Lead. The Lead channel provides six COSM-powered choices, including Overdrive, Distortion, Metal, Metal Stack, Acoustic Simulator, and the new Extreme. The JC Clean channel provides pure, transparent tone. Channel switching can be carried out from the amp's top panel or via optional footswitch (BOSS FS series, sold separately).

Pro Effects
The CUBE-20XL's FX section provides six types of great-sounding digital effects, including Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Heavy Octave, plus independent Delay and COSM Spring Reverb. For hands-free selection, an optional footswitch can be used to switch the EFX on and off.

Tuner and Aux Input
The handy built-in tuner lets you tune while your guitar is connected to the CUBE-20XL. Manual and Chromatic tuning modes are provided. In addition, the Tuning Fork function conveniently emits a reference pitch if you wish to hear an audible tone. The aux input can accept a portable music player for jam-along sessions with your favorite songs and backing tracks.

COSM Defined
Composite Object Sound Modeling (COSM) is Roland's innovative and powerful sound-modeling technology. COSM analyzes the many factors that make up the original sound, such as the electrical and physical characteristics of the original, and then produces a digital model that can reproduce the same sound. In designing the CUBE-XL series, Roland meticulously analyzed and modeled array of world-class amps and effects to bring you the versatile and authentic tone palette that these amps provide.

An amp that gets straight to it. Sure, you won't be using Heavy Octave on every song. It sucks that it goes down, not up 12 semitones. Delay is a litte on the quiet side. But for the price that is all a minor gripe in what is an amp I will stick with for a long time.
How loud is it? Past 10:00 without Power-Squeezer, it begins shaking the wall. I use my MXR comp as a feedback controller and comp, jam to Carcass and Cryptopsy, Rush and Judas Priest sometimes when I can remember the riffs. I set the EQ controls once and bam, there's the tone I wanted, any amp I find a relationship like that with is a keeper.
Ultimate beginner/practice amp, for the price you will get the metal distortion and crystal cleans you desire.
I was seaching for a practice amp to replace an obsolete old DOD 15 watt with distortion that sounded like T-Rex and Zeppelin. For death metal distortion to Rush tones to Pink Floyd to superior cleans the Roland is the one. You do not need to use the most extreme setting in order to get a nice tight heavy sound for Carcass style metal sounds. I have played and owned many amps before, Line 6, Carvin, Mesa Boogie, Ampeg, Vox Valvetronix etc and I like the tone of this amp very much.

As far as features are concerned it gives you a chromatic tuner and enough fx to mess around with, easy controls, you don't need to read the manual to get into this amp. Only drawback is no way to save sounds and it goes to JC Clean when you turn it on.
If you haven't seen the video of this amp that gives a "Matrix" style look into it's build quality, it appears alot of thought went into this amp and it shows. Just enough space on the top to put an MXR Dyna-Comp pedal. I use Monster, a really short one from the MXR to the amp. Roland put a cable wraparound on the back of this amp for easy "get up and go" transporting. Man if I had this amp when I was in high school it would be blasphemous. As I said above, "Extreme" is the heaviest setting on this amp, a rip-roaring distortion, roll back the gain to get that Suffocation-style sound.
Now I love that sound and after a few days of owning this thing I checked out the other channels and wow. Even two clicks down on "Metal" you can get that sweet high-gain too for the heaviest, crank up the mids to get much more Megadeth and Morbid Angel style distortion on this one. The Acoustic Simulator is like a second clean channel. Roland knows what's up with chorus so of course that makes this the highest category in this review. The right effetcs dial setting and pickup position sounds straight out of 80s King Crimson on a cube, no suprise.
Then you can go about crushing bones and dominiating the universe. But what if you need to lower it down. Power-Squeezer is the coolest, brings the Cube 20XL down to 2-watts for volume-aware environments, all gain is retained and make sure you still sound excellent. For the price this amp has a fair and good number of fantastic sounds, no doubt effects are limited and me I never use solo mode, but you know what? This Cube 20XL gives metal and funk players just enough, to have a great time.

I love my Roland AC-33 and that's what influenced me to go with the Cube 20XL. I thought this would be perfect for playing at home. It has the features I was looking for and the great Roland name. It is the quietest amp when no signal is being processed, but unfortunately when a note or a chord is played there is a fairly loud annoying white noise that persists until the note or chord sustains out. I heard back from Roland and they said that they are aware of the noise; it is inherent in the circuit, and some amps are noisier than others. Say what??? That doesn't sound like an answer that is consistent with the Roland quality I know. I was willing to try a replacement thinking maybe mine was a lemon, but MF informed me they wouldn't be getting any in until June. As usual, MF was fantastic with the return and took good care of me. Thank you Musician's Friend for making your customers number one and for standing behind the products you sell.

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

I've havn"t come across any amps in this price range that come close to this amp. Before I bought this amp I played two big name rock amps. the ones that everybody buys because of there tube amp series, I've gone back to the cube series, It is simply more playable and handy for someone who just wants to plug in and rock out. To own it is to love it.
This amp does not have as many features as some amps I
I've owned but all the features are useable. There are no phony sounds or
bells and whistles all the major effects are here and they all sound quite good.
This amp is as bullet proof as I've ever owned, very light, but solid. I've owned most of the cube series amps and used them at home and on the road, I've never ever had any problems.
Great price for a great small amp. this amp can be used for any type on music or any gig. I've never had a hint of a problem. This amp gives you a lot more tone and usable effects than most if not all of the big name amps.

Great Value

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

I Own a really cheap Guitar. Its A Spectrum. It came with a small amp. But The Spectrum am was Crap. So went to my local dealer and he introduced me to the Roland 15w amp. I was surprised by the Punch it had. so I started looking it up on YouTube and I found the Roland 20w amp. I liked the sound so the next day I went to my dealer and bought the 20w Amp. As soon as I hooked it up I was shocked on how my crap guitar sounded. It was WAY Better. I Love the Effects. Especially the Flanger. I can play Sammy Hagar with ease. If you have the 160 and you need an Amp get this. You wont be disappointed.

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

Unbelievable little amp. I am stunned by the sounds I can get out of this amp. Anywhere from clean to extreme. This amp amazes me. If you want one of the crunchiest metal sounds, this amp has it. Clean channel nice as well. Quite possibly the best guitar related purchase I've ever made.

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

The amp arrived with both top corner guards badly cracked. No visable damage to the shipping carton -must have been damaged BEFORE. going into the shipping box. However the Amp works great with no problems. Roland Responded Very quickly with Replacement guards. I have the Musician's Friend Warranty -so I'm not concerned about future problems. This is one of the best amps I've owned--over 50 years playing jazz guitar. Buy It!

Amazing Little Amp

By Kevin Bayless

from midwest

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

I purchased this amp on a whim because I joined a band and didn't want to haul a giant amp to rehearsals. This thing is a marvel - sounds amazing both clean and dirty, and is loud enough to rehearse with a full band. Probably not loud enough for gigs unless you point it right at your head and mic it, but that's splitting hairs. The first Roland amp that I've purchased, and just a tight, focused, amazing guitar sound.

CUBE 20XL

By John Roberts

Comments about Roland CUBE-20XL 20W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

It exceeded my expectations. I owned an old tube Fender Champ amp back in the 80's and 90's and regret selling it 15 years ago. This 20XL has both great clean and distorted sounds and is plenty loud enough for my home use and even some small (drummerless) rehearsals. I really recommend this amp.
Great effects, clean channel vs. lead channel is like having two great little amps in one.
So far so good, and Roland has a great reputation regardless, so I am not anticpating any issues.
Money well spent. Especially now, when my music gear budget is nearly non-existent. and it's hard enough to afford strings for my guitars and basses, value is key!

I've only had the amp for about 2 weeks, but so far great quality... I got mine discounted because it was on the shelf for about a week and it was the last one but I had to have it! power cord in good condition sounded phenomenal!
Awesome value for what you get. Great deep bass sound, great distorted sound. probably my favorite amp Ive ever bought.

A nice amp at the sale price. But you might shop around for a small amp at the list price.
Good tone and reverb. Most of the FX are decent but limited and some are not really necessary.
Sturdily built. Takes my ASAT w/twin humbuckers very well.
