I had the previous model, the Cube 60, and this new one is superior, way louder, and still small enough for an old man to grab and go. I use it for blues harp, I have it set on the Fender black panel setting and it sounds amazingly close to the one I used to own. Other players are always shocked when they hear how the tiny thing puts out, and they always remark that they thought it was miked and running through the p.a., but no, it's a screamer all on it's own. I started out putting it on a chair, but now I just leave it on the floor just to tame the little beast. It still fills the room with tone, and I am NEVER drowned out by the guitar amps. I even ran an external speaker with it but found I didn't need it, it's so unbelievably loud. Some players are under the impression that you need a 100 pound, expensive antique, boutique tube amp to get tone, well those days are long gone thanks to Roland. Hearing is believing, and so is lifting. Save your money, save your back and get this little monster, you'll be glad you did.
Onboard effects will save millions in batteries!
Top notch construction, extremely durable, Tone like a Fender Twin!
Best bang for the buck in the smallest package out there.

I've owned the Cube 80xl for a year now and I've used it on many gigs with great success. I made by money back many times over. This thing absolutely honks on stage, and keeps up with the big boy Fenders like a pro. I made a modification with a new American made 120 watt driver, and this 80 watt amp got much, much louder, although the stock driver is a real screamer too. I run a p.a. speaker out of the External Speaker feature and the drummer can hear me loud and clear. I also hook it up to the p.a. with the Line Out, and man oh man it fills the room with the exact same Tube-Like tone. Of course some sound men with stick a mic in front of it, and that works great too.
Even as a stand alone amp it just rocks the room on the Brit Combo setting, which emulates a Vox. I have the volume at around 10 o'clock and have never had it any higher. I add a touch of the onboard Digital Delay, a wee touch of gain, and it wails. It's like a Swiss Army Amp, lots of features, more than I'll ever use, but it's fun to experiment with, and it's never failed me or disappointed me on a gig, no tubes to worry about, always the same, consistent quality sound, an absolute joy to use. I get so many compliments it's silly. And it's a breeze to transport with it's light weight, and takes up almost no room at all on stage. Even in a big room I've never had a problem being heard, it's amazingly loud and clear. I can't see ever needing another amp, and I've tried them all over the centuries. A buddy was so impressed that he bought one to add to his collection of mostly vintage Fenders, and uses it exclusively now on gigs. Even if you have the money for a Twin Reverb, this is a good investment, cause to me it sounds just like one, and only weighs 38 lbs, and never needs re-tubing or maintenance of any kind. This is my one and only amp and I can't recommend it enough.
Use the Line Out or the External Speaker Out for super flexibility.
Extremely user friendly, extremely tough.
STILL a great deal for such a workhorse.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I typically play for 50 bucks and free beer so yeah, I'm a professional. Take my word. It's a great amp loaded with features.

I'm not the kind of guy who buys a car for the cup holders but this thing has it all. The onboard tuner is as accurate as any and beats the snot outta carrying around an inline. The 80 second sampler is great for horsing around with new ideas. Solo channel is rill handy for the stage. The effects are passable to all but the most discerning gearheads though there is slight bleed from reverb to delay. Eh. It's not noticable after a couple beers.

The amp models sound good and you can tweek em all over the place. The dedicated clean channel is excellent- super crispy, fat and warm. It's got enough juice to play any venue you'd find yourself in without a mic. It's built solid.

This one won't impress the purists but it'll make you a happy camper if you're looking for an all in one amp that performs.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp for its JC Clean setting. I'm tired of the unreliable nature and inconsistent sound of tube amps. They sound good, but can't be trusted. I'm not up to lugging around a JC 120 like I used to, so the Cube 80XL fits the bill for what I need. I run pedals in front of it and it sounds good. Its light and easy to haul around which is important to someone who gigs as much as I do. On the down side, I don't really see how anyone can make use of any of the "Lead" models. They are uniformly awful, in my opinion. The effects should be marked "for emergency use only". Looper is good for practicing. Delay and Reverb are useable. I wish Roland (or someone) would just make a small, solid-state amp that was specifically designed to have a great clean sound and nothing else.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been playing and performing for 30 years and used almost everything you could think of and in my opinion this amp sounds great (I'm a very critical player). It's got a great clean tone for both jazz and country and the modeling settings can get a good tone for both rock or heavy metal. It's light, road worthy and easy to move around. I would recommend this amp highly! I play a jazz gig weekly with this amp, stuff like George Benson, Steely Dan, Larry Carlton - it gets all the tone and volume I need live, if didn't like it, I wouldn't use it (Ihave 5 other mps sitting in my bedroom) ! It sounds great.
Good features. Excellent tone. Good amp simulations in a small package. I don't care for the reverb though.
It's a little brut. Good quality and road worthy.
Best value for the money I've ever heard/played through. I've used a Marshall, Stereo Fender Twinn Reverbs, Boogie, and a Line 6 Vetta II through the years but this little amp sounds great! It's light, has a tight bass response, plenty of headroom, and would cover most any gig.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

Overall I like this little amp a lot. It has great tone for a small amp. The clean channel works well for jazz and country stuff and the overdrive channel offers some good options. I don't care for the chorus sounds, reverb is just OK but workable, the delay is average sounding. Since it's closed back, it has a tight responsive tone overall.

I bought this amp to gig with because it's light, no tubes, and is versatile. I needed something dependable and it certainly fits the bill. I've used so many amps through the years, mostly tube amps (Fender, Boogie and Marshall) I wanted something I didn't have to worry about at a gig.

It has the volume and tone I need for my gig. George Benson clean and Larry Carlton overdrive type tunes.

For the price and tone... nothing comes close to this little amp. I'm very satisfied with it.
Has all the basic features most guitar players use. It's nice to have them all in one small package. It would be nice to get one comprehensive footswitch controller to control everything in a small easy to use pedal specifically designed for this amp. I think Dr. Footswitch makes one.
Roland always makes good stuff. Built to last and road worthy. Easy to use, intuitive controls.
Great value. I looked at so many amps before I decided on this one.

Roland CUBE-80XL - Great tone, well constructed amp for all types of music

By Richard Jackson

from NJ

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp replaced my 26 year old Peavey Bandit workhorse and is nearly 15 lbs. lighter.
I've used it with solid body and semi hollow guitars and with a Digitech RP355 effects pedal to get the sounds I need for different types of music.

I understand this amp works well with pedal steel guitars but haven't tested it with mine yet.

The built in digital effects and amp models are adequate for rehearsals, but I prefer using an external effects unit for greater flexibility and control.

My 2nd choice was a Vox Valvetronics VT80+ which in my opinion had a better built in effects and amp modeler. However hearing both side by side using the clean channel, the Roland was much brighter and projected better around the room.
A few of my favorite features that made this amp stand out over others in the price range:

-Line Out
-Exten spkr out
-Presence control plus bright boost switch
-Footswitch control of int effects and channel switching using readily available footswitches
-Volume control on clean channel that allows gradual adjustment of volume (and doesn't go to max power on a low 2 or 3 setting).
-Quiet input stage, no hiss or noise when idle or playing low passages.
- Sound quality is fantastic, especially the Roland clean channel.
- Delivers sound comparable to my Fender tube amps.
- Digital spring reverb is close to the real thing
- Solid design and feel.
- Well contructed and protected on all corners
- A metallic speaker grille that protects the speaker and doesn't vibrate when playing.
-It's a good overall value if you need a versatile & reliable amplilfier to play a variety of music and venues.

- There are less expensive amps and other options available in this price category, I checked out more than 10 before buying and was most impressed by the sound of this one.

Fantastic Amplifier

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

So glad I bought this amplifier. Small and light, yet beefy, very powerful, clear, articulate, tight, sounds even better the louder it gets. Superior tone, and tone is everything. Still amazes me every time I play how good it sounds, feels like I should send Roland some more money because I ripped them off for what this amplifier costs. Mic it, and it is all you need for even medium or larger venues.

I use strictly the clean channel (JC 120 Jaz Chorus) amplifier, and put pedals before it. I use the bright setting, Presence (really nice, turn it up halfway to 3/4), EQ, and Reverb only on this amplifier. Everything else is guitar and pre-amp pedals. Reacts REALLY well to pedals. Have tried using the other amp models on this amplifier with the pedals before it, they sound almost as good, but not quite.

Compare this amplifier side by side with some of its competitors, even some much higher priced amplifiers, and listen for the tone the way the amplifier reacts. This was the one for me.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp produces a very clean and cutting tone and yet has warmth and body; not shrill or tinny unless you want it that way by turning down the Bass and Presence controls.
Solo function is very useful for setting up tones that would normally take too long between songs to acquire, like during a typical American Legion gig.
I have reserved one Solo preset for the clean channel(surf music), and one Solo preset for the lead channel(flanger and some distortion).
Now I just need to get a decent footswitch, and I can Rock-On!

And for you guys that don't have a long enough attention span to read the very good manual all the way through, it does have an auto tune tuner if you hold down the tuner button for 2 seconds or more.

After researching this great little power house amp, I decided to purchase one.
It was the right decision, At 80 watts w/ sealed cabinet and extension speaker outlet,
    This amp fits the need.

I have been playing for over 40 years as a pro and now worship Christian music.
If you have roadfies and professional hired personel to move your equipment, I understand, but there is no need to hall around stacks of amps to impress the average audience.

If you have pros running the sound system, and you have a direct out and you can get your sound w/ pedals & effects and of course hear yourself, this amp fits the need!!!

I used the working pro 12 SWR w/ the pro sound company and wow, worke d and sounded great!

I also play guitar and wanted something easy to hauk, when I have to put it in the trunk,
This is it! 35 lbs and w/ extendion 12": speaker WOW!!!

I give it a top rating, for what it is and the cost and features are truly a great value, No its not a Marshall doublr stack, and not the price either!!

So I am happy I decide to go w/ this amp to fit the need for the intended use. Plus I won't need a roadie crew to haul it!
    Tough little box!
    Affordable!

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp about a month ago. When I was at the store, I was skeptical that this amp can produce a good sound, because it's very small. When I plugged my Gibson SG into the amp, man was I wrong. This amp delivers a great tone, and there are many features that are useful. Also, it's a steal. It sounds like some of the more expensive amps. I don't like the tuner. Very hard to work, and takes a lot of time! That's why I gave features a 4.5. Overall, GREAT amp, and I recommend this to anybody playing the guitar, ranging from beginners to experts.

I have two, one to gig with, always loaded, one for practice and in reserve. I also like the "acceptable" on board effects. I mostly use just a little reverb and delay. This amp will not be everyones cup of tea. But it works for me. Wish I'd had one years ago.

Finally used two of these 80XL amps with my Boss GT-100 to get a full stereo sound on stage at the club I played over the weekend. Running stereo into the house PA too. Sounded great!
Had many tubes amps that I liked (most recently the EVH 50 watt head) but just weren't practical when I need to play 45-50 cover songs in a night. I had considered the Roland JC-120 but I'm reading the older models sound better. But I want reliability so a 25 year old amp is not for me when I'm making money every weekend. Also, two of these are easier to carry than one big JC-120 and I get a better separation (stereo) effect by placing them further apart than the JC-120 speaker set-up allows. A live gig is always going to be the determining factor in whether or not a rig, or even a pedal sticks around. Boss GT-100 into a pair of these 80XL is easy to set up, sounds are ready set with the GT-100 easy to take down at 3:00am!

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

        See above comments on features.

Once again, I returned this amp. I'm going to purchase a Fender Deluxe Reverb and plug in selected pedals.
Effects bleed into one another. Constantly getting a "snare-drum" effect and "white-noise" sound behind guitar notes and a "tremolo" warble without having selected reverb. None of these extraneous sounds were from "hum" or "feedback" or a "bad connection". They were effects bleedovers. Reading the reviews, this phenomenon affects all "boutique" amps: from the Roland XL's to the Vox VT series, to the Fender Mustang. My advice? Stay away from these "do-everything" boutique amps. Period.

I returned the product. I'm going to buy a Fender Deluxe Reverb and plug in selected pedals.
        Effects "Bleed-Over" is unacceptable.
Why pay for something that'll drive you nuts?

I own a lot of amps: Vintage Fenders, Marshalls, tube and solid state. This little gizmo has become my favorite - first because it just plain sounds good, second because the on-board effects are good, and third because it is so portable. Don't be fooled by its size and price. It kinda reminds me of what Santana said about the first little Boogie amp, "Man that little thing really boogies" Well, this is the modern equivalent. Very impressed with its sound and capabilities.
Loaded. Everything except an effects loop - which you don't really need with this amp because of the on-board effects.
Haven't had it long enough to prove its reliability over time.
This IS an incredible value for the money. The amp is loud, versatile and sounds well above average.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is the best modelling amp there is. I've owned a few of them, crazy it sounds as good as it does. You really have to plug into this to believe it. I can't see owning anything else, ever, it is that good, I've been playing for 35 years and have a very fussy ear (too fussy) Don't even try line 6, I flogged my spider iv after hearing this and went right down to buy one. It isn't even a contest. When you put it on the rectifier or extreme(with the phaser)setting you get a Van Halen sound that will just blow your mind. Headroom galore, distortion that borders on ridiculous, just like a 5150 amp. You won't be disappointed, there is nothing like this on the market - nothing......

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I loved the Roland Micro Cube Amp, and I spent lots of money and time going through tube amps to find the perfect sound. Then someone said, "Hey if you aren't a professional get a solid state amp with a great clean and lead channel." I investigated the 80XL and it has everything a beginner needs all the way up to someone starting a garage band. Also, it is great for home practice because you can put head phones in. The price, clarity of tone, awesome power, and multi-faceted nature of the amp is extremely practical and useable. Don't convince yourself that you need a Mesa Boogie Amp, or High-priced Fender or Marshall: get this amp turn the knob for the AMP model and use the EQ to dial in the sound. I can't say enough good things about the amp.

        Rock and Roland

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

If you can afford this amp, you will not regret buying it. It's the PERFECT practice amp for a pro, and a pretty great first amp for a beginner. I don't think I'd gig with it, but I wholeheartedly believe I could if I wanted to.
The Roland Cube 80XL has some stellar features. Great effects, great options, great tone. I'm docking Roland 1 point because the features aren't as intuitive as I'd like them to be. I had to read the instruction manual a few times to get the hang of the looper, and the tuner can be a pain if you don't learn how to engage it right.
Here is where I'm going to dote: the amp models are the BEST I've ever heard. I own and gig with a Mesa Recto, and typically I get sad and mopey when I leave band practice because I can't take it home with me everytime. (If you've never owned a Mesa, you probably have a stronger back than someone who does because of their extreme weight).

Now, I'm not the least bit sad to leave my Boogie at the practice site because my Cube 80 is basically capable of the same sound with about 100 fewer pounds.
My only compaint is how expensive the amp is. It's worth it, but I wish Roland could knock off a lttle. You get what you pay for, I guess. The sound warrants the money, but the amp isn't very accesible to beginners thanks to the price tag.

Comments about Roland CUBE-80XL 80W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

This is a great little amp. Don't let the small footprint fool you, the Cube 80XL has a BIG sound and plenty of tone. With 11 COSM amp models, there's a model for everybody, but I love the tone of clean channel. I own a classic Fender tube amp and know what tone is all about. The Clean channel (modeled on the Jazz Chorus) has all the punch and sparkle that you could ask for. My guitar has a couple of humbuckers, but I have a friend who plays a Strat through a Cube 80 and it sounds equally as good. The on-board effects are very good...all you need. I knocked a point off the Features rating because the foot-switches should be included, and using 3 separate switches & cables is a bit clunky. I use the on-board effects for practice but on stage, I use a multi-effect box through the Clean channel. I set the Lead channel for the acoustic guitar simulator, and still have the Solo channel to customize. Another review mentioned that you have to manually switch the notes when using the built-in tuner. This isn't strictly true. You *can* operate it that way if you want, but holding the button down for a couple of seconds puts the tuner into auto-mode. Any other complaints about this amp are strictly nit-picking. The power cord coils around a couple of plastic hooks on the back. The handle is mounted a little to the side of the balance point, so the amp wants to bang into your leg if you carry it from the wrong side....minor stuff. I've been gigging with this amp for several months and the other band members are still remarking on how much my sound has improved.
