I was using two Mission pedals which are built like a brick until after about 4 months of use, one pedal was flopping toward the toe position. The adjustment on the pedal didn't work as advertised; I needed a reliable pedal. With the EV-5, it's much, much lighter than the mission but stays in place. The EV-5 has a longer throw, which I actually found out, I preferred. No problem configuring it with my MPC 101 controller. Was up and running in less than 5 minutes. I can't speak about the long term use yet.
Uses: Volume and Wah Wah
Cons: I wish I was able to put my own TRS cable into the unit.

If you are an Axe Fx user, you might want to try these out. I paid way too much for the mission pedals, only to be very, very disappointed for my purposes. Mission does make pedals that are spring loaded and return the pedal to the heel position. I can't speak about those pedals, as I've never tried them.

The EV5 only transmits 0-127 CC data over the toe-down 50% of its travel, leaving a large heel-down zone (the other 50%) with nothing going on. So it instantly loses half it's potential for expression. This makes it tricky to use on two fronts - the travel that produces data is shallow - but I'm sure most musicians will have an inate understanding of how thrown the player is by the fact the data transmiting range isn't spread over the entire travel of the pedal.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

This has to be about the least expensive Roland-Boss tool you can buy, yet it does exactly what it is supposed to do and apparently lasts forever. I have had mine for years, have used it with various roland-boss devices, and have never had any problems at all.

Great Pedal, Horrible Contruction

By Organ/keys man

from Southampton, NY

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

I've played morleys, and even an incredible ernie ball pedal made just for keyboards (shoulda grabbed it when I had the chance!) These pedals are cool. I play sitting or standing. When I play standing I these pedals don't last for more then 5 or 6 months. They aren't made to take the rigors of the road like the afroementioned pedal (especially the ernie ball which is made of solid steel!)I hated having to replace these so much. They used to be $**. Now they're over $**! The list price of $** is a gut busting hilarity! NO WAY I'D PAY IT! They should lose the shoddy materials and use better casing. Afterall the technology of these things isn't so advanced!

Using this with a Boss DD7 delay. Works great. I use it to control delay time, can be used in other ways with this pedal. It's mostly plastic but know users who've had them working fine for years.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

Bought this for use with my old Boss ME-8 pedal board. Works perfectly and , truth be told, should have been sold with the ME-8 since it is crucial to controlling volume and wah. Must have been a price cutting measure. As others have mentioned , it is very plastic and very light . Very happy with the purchase as it does what it's supposed to and does it very well.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

I've had this for about 12 months now and its working well. The construction is a little flaky by BOSS standards and the connecting cable feels cheap. The cheap plastic does make the pedal light though which is great if you're lugging around a lot of gear! But otherwise they should really have used better quality components or this pedal should be cheaper.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

I bought this pedal to use with my Boss RT-20 Rotary Ensemble (which is an awesome pedal in of itself ! I recommend every guitar player get one.) The only thing I don't like about the EV-5 is that it is made of plastic. I would have liked metal construction. It performs flawlessly in controlling the rotary's speed in real time. Two thumbs up !

I tried a Yamaha expression pedal for my Roland Juno DS88 and when setting it to the cutoff frequency 90% of the pedal's rotation was doing nothing. This EV-5 pedal (the one recommended in DS88 manual) works much better. The frequency sweep is spread across close to 100% of the pedal's rotation. I haven't used the pedal to control other parameters yet, but assume it will work ok.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

Only had a couple of days and it works ok. Very light plastic construction that appears like it would break if dropped on a hard floor. Does not appear built for the long haul, but we shall see. Very over priced for what you get in an over hundred buck volume pedal IMO. The Roland
VR 09 manual warns that connecting any other type pedal into the board could damage the electronics. If this thing quits I will just go to a passive pedal between the board and amp. If it is still working a year from now I would raise its rating.

Comments about Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal:

Universal expression pedal. Great for use with the RT-20 as a rotary speed control. Great with loop stations for manipulating tempo. Basically this will work with most/any pedal or device which has the option to control functions using an expression pedal. Simple.

I needed this pedal as an expression pedal for my Roland keyboards (other pedals were incompatible). Plugged it in and it's working great and just as expected. It has a nice smooth transition, but my only complaint would be that it's too small, which just makes it difficult to control at times. Other than that, it works great and I highly recommend for use with any Roland products.
