I originally purchased this booster to provide a volume boost for solos without changing my tone as most/all distortion and overdrive pedals do. It did just that. Perfect. I used it at the end of my signal chain and it provided volume boost with no change to my tone. Then I started reading about how it is actually intended to be the FIRST pedal in your chain, and now I have begun experimenting with that. I don't get nearly the volume boost, but rather a subtle tone enhancing effect. Notes seem a little crisper, a little more punch, a little more gain. In this position I leave the pedal on all the time for "enhanced tone." If placed at the end of my chain I use it as an on/off for volume boost. I play Fender HWY1 HSS strat through a Fender Blues Jr. amp and use a Digitech Bad Monkey and BOSS GE-7 equalizer to create my basic tone. The Pickup Booster is a great addition whether at the beginning or the end of the signal chain. Only negatives are a distinct "pop" sound when switching the effect OFF, and sometimes I notice a small amount of noise when it is powered by an AC adapter. The resonance switch I suppose is a nice added feature, but I never use it. Don't really find it useful. Just seems to knock off the high end frequencies to varying degrees. I like those "glassy" highs that a strat can produce. Basically, I like my overall sound, this just adds a little something extra to it, alittle more grit, alittle more power. Subtle, but nice. Another pedal I have tried and really like is the tone enhancing BBE Sonic Stomp. Takes your tone and really makes it shine and sparkle.

I'm not overly impressed with this pedal. I know what it's purpose is, to basically provide uncolored gain boost, and remove impedance loading through a chain of pedals(the reason I tried it). Although this pedal provides up to 25db of uncolored gain boost, when used with gain levels above unity, provided much un-needed noise, caused ANY cable connected to it on the input side to become highly microphonic, and basically added nothing to the sound, but rather caused it to become bloated, and muddy. By the way, I play a Gibson SG with Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. While this pedal sounds okay with my Strat, all attempts to use it with medium to high output humbuckers have been a disappointment. Furthermore, when attempting to sell this item on Ebay, I have found that it is worth absolutely nothing on resale. Beware....

My Favorite Pedal

By crandall

from Chicago, IL

I bought one of these about a week ago, and I love it. I'm using it with humbuckers, which I thought might be weird because of it's humbucker imitation functionality. Basically, it gives my guitar an extra boost of presence which makes it far more versatile. I'm no longer restricted to that one sweet spot in the volume range of the pickups. I love this pedal like a kid loves a shiny new wagon. It's built solid, looks great, and has given me exactly the sound I was looking for.

Great

I use it as a volume booster for soloing, if you put it in front of the amp itll do nothing but add a little more gain, but if you use it in the loop youll get a volume boost leaving your tone intact. The only problem (for me) is that the knob goes from 6db to 25db, I use it on the minimum 6db, but still I feel it is a little way too much of a boost for soloing, One needs around 3-4db

Only two flaws. . .

By Strat Lover-3mUEM

I have not tried too many boosters, but this pedal is EXTREMELY transparent. I Use it in the effects loop to boost the signal from my preamp to the power tubes, and it sounds awesome. Same amount of gain, same tone exactly, but louder. Works great for solos. However, I HATE the input/output placements. Hard to stuff on a pedal board. The only other problem I have is the levels. 6db is BARELY too much, in my opinion, anyway. I might check out the MXR boost, which starts at 0db. Besides that, this pedal is perfect, and unbeatable for the price.

Great for tube amps

By Sixstringpie

from breckenridge, tx

I am a tube amp only player. The pickup booster lights up the pre-amp tubes with bolts from heaven. One reviewer wrote that it only makes your guitar louder. Solid state player yes.

Delivers what it promises

By Fred-AZwug

Boosts pick-up output w/o excessive coloration or noise. Reasonance switch is interesting and useful, but not, imo, particularly convincing (at making my single coils sound like humbuckers). Well-conceived, well-built.

Pretty swell

By booster01

from Georgetown, TX

I got this pedal a few days ago afer doing a lot of research and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I had no idea it would be so loud at a low setting (top of the dial equal with the LED light = loud enough). That being said, it takes a lot for this thing to start breaking up your speaker to give you that sweet, smooth overdrive, but if you can bear all the volume then you are handsomly rewarded. I gave it a 10 for features because I subscribe to the simple is best philosophy when it comes to music. One dial, and the resonance switch. The res switch is sort of useless because the change in sound is so subtle. 10 for quality because, well, it appears to be built well. It's heavy enough so I guess that means something, right?9 for value because 1.) it wasn't 100% what i was looking for. I'd say it delivers about 96% of what i was hoping for, and 2.) if you're not into blues, rock, or something else which requires a natural sound then this will not do you much good.Overall this thing is a 10 because it is simple, but versatile.

Seymour Duncan really outdid himself, this is the best pedal I've ever had! My Fender Standard Strat sounds like it is a Mick Thomson signature.

Can be useful

Makes single coil guitar sound like humbucker on pickup switch 3. No. 1 switch too subtle for me. Pedal like the MXR (Dunlop) Micro Amp effect but with the pickup switch. It can overdrive an amp and make guitar sound fuller like Micro amp pedal.

Amazing! Know how to use it!

By Anonymous

This pedal is better than I'd imagined! I did my homework on it and it did what I'd read it would and more! It's best for tube amps, most definitely. It's perfect for rolling your volume down and coil tapping and then boosting that signal. Awesome pedal, build like a rock!

Know what you are doing! (tube amps ONLY!)

By Fiendn

from collingswood, NJ

This is not a "distortion Pedal", nor is it a "solo booster"... Nor will it have the intended effect with TRANSISTOR (solid state) amps. This is a GAIN booster... It pushes the front end of your TUBE amp into OVERDRIVE... It will send the clean channel of your TUBE amp into a smooth, bluesy overdrive...and will push your overdrive channel into a hi-gain channel... Built like a tank, True BYPASS, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (for those who know what they are buying)

boosts' pickups

By Balcerak

I bought this pedal to make my passive pickups seem active and it does a great job, I'm running it through my effects loop as the first pedal on my chain and it transparently boosts my tone with great clarity.

Just what I needed

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I bought this product used at a local music store. I have wanted a pedal for quite a while that just boosted my volume for leads over the other guitar players in my band. I have read others on here saying it doesn't work as a volume boost, that it just adds gain...wrong. It works as a great volume boost if you run it in the effects loop, which puts it post-pre-amp. Without turning the unit even to the 12:00 position, I get a volume boost over the other guitars for a lead. Check it out for yourself. Good product.

Fantastic Gain!!!1

By RonJohnny

from Cullowhee, NC

It seems to me that the guitarist whom plays through a tube amp would benefit the most from this great little pedal. If one is looking for that extra gain without the buzz of an overdrive pedal, to let the amp breakup on it's own, it will have a much rounder tone to it. This is the sound that I have looked for high and low. and I doesn't require much to do it with a little tweaking a my Marshall 900 knobs to make it the Pumpkiny sound that I endear so much. As for the resonance switch, I use laces in my strat, so I don't really have a use for it, I bought it for the unfiltered, clean as diamond gain.

No need to change pickups or guitars anymore

By Frank D.-.o_Mb

from Phila. Pa.

See all my reviews

I own 4 Fender Strats, 3 with gold Lace Sensors and one with American Delta-tone pickups. I have tried everything from vintage to Texas specials and like the Gold Lace Sensors best because they are quiet. This booster pedal can make Lace sensors sound like Texas Specials, Vintage or even Humbuckers with the PU Res. switch. I haven't tried it on my Telecasters or Les Paul yet, but it sure expands the sounds I get from my Strats.

Really good pedal.

By MXR fan

See all my reviews

I bought this pedal to drive the front end of my 100w tube amp because it has always sounded too dry to me and I am hoping to get a more reactive tone. I use it in the beginning of my chain right after my tuner and right before my ISP decimator. The gain is set at about 9 o'clock and I keep the pedal on all the time. The effect this has is that is makes the clean channel of my amp louder and more touch sensitive while the overdrive channel is juicier. My amp is high gain so I set the OD gain at about three and put the volume up which results in a really heavy yet clean sounding distortion. For lead boosts I have on-board gain switches installed on my guitars. This pedal is extremely transparent and since I have it plugged into my BBE Supa Charger, there is no 60 cycle hum at all. My ISP takes care of any noise from my pickups although if I'm standing on top of my amp I'll get a little feedback. The resonance switch is very subtle and has a greater effect on single coil pups. Humbuckers are warmed up slightly but its not a dramatic effect.

Good clean boost

By Wes Inman

from Torrington, Ct.

See all my reviews

I bought this pedal simply as a good clean boost for solos without changing my tone. This is exactly what this pedal does and I am very pleased. It makes a little noise at higher settings, but not much. The manual suggests putting this at the front of your chain, but this did not work well for me. I use a Behringer TO800 and Marshall Guv'nor Plus 2 for overdrives. This did increase the distortion of these pedals slightly and thicken the tone, but there was very little volume boost even at higher settings. After placing this pedal AFTER my overdrives (but before other pedals)I can get a big volume boost which is what I wanted. The Resonance switch is a nice feature but very subtle. It will take the thinness out of my Tele's tone, but I wouldn't say it makes it sound like a humbucker at all. Still, a very nice feature I like. The worst feature is the battery compartment (what were you thinking?). You have to take out the bottom four screws and the body comes apart. I use mine on a pedalboard with a power supply so this is not an issue for me, but I couldn't imagine having to change a battery at a gig. But the pedal seems very rugged and should last. Most importantly, it does give a great clean boost without changing your tone.

Great Booster!

By SteveMaestro

I love how this wonder pedal adds more grit and character to my sound when needed. Really really simple and appealing design; one pot knob to get set your boost gain, a one/off foot switch and a resonance switch, which supposedly makes single coiled pickups sound like a humbucker. I play a humbucker guitar, so at first I thought I could not enjoy this function to the fullest, but I was wrong as it works on humbucker pickups as well! It gives this nice bassy and boomy sound, especially if you're playing on higher registers.
