OVERVIEW

A Silver Anniversary gem with unique features and show-stopping looks.

To celebrate a quarter century of building fine guitar amps Soldano Custom Amplification has made the Hot Rod 25 tube amp head. Like their Hot Rod 50 Plus and Hot Rod 100 Plus, the preamp circuitry is based on the legendary Soldano 100W Super Lead Overdrive. The power section utilizes two 6L6 power tubes and a filter choke in the power supply-two features usually found only in higher powered amps-that enable this compact little 25-watt head to deliver much tighter bass and punchier low end than most other amps in its class.

The Hot Rod 25 also features a tube-buffered, post-master volume effects loop and effortless channel switching via foot switch between the Normal and Overdrive Channels. There are independent Preamp gain and Master Volume controls for each channel. Bass, Middle, Treble and Presence controls provide the tone shaping. A rotary Impedance selector switch allows for the use of 4, 8 or 16 ohm speaker cabinets.

FEATURES
  • Power: 25 watts
  • Two Channel Head with Tube Buffered Effects Loop
  • Weight: 29 lbs
  • Five 12AX7 tubes

Comments about Soldano Hot Rod 25 25W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I really liked this amp, it seemed to have all the features that the all other amps I owned in the past 50 years seemed to lack. The main feature of this amp was its ability to deliver a rip saw sound effect at a low volume. The power amp and the preamp each have their own separate volume and gain controls. I found that when I turned both volume controls to 0, the preamp gain to 10, the power amp gain to about 2, and the gain on my Gibson Les Paul down to 1, I could get a really good rip sound at a low volume. Another feature I really appreciated was how clearly the knobs were marked on the amp. The writing was above the knobs in large letters on a white background. I always hated amps that had the writing below the knobs so you could not see the writing while standing up looking down at the knobs. I also did not like amps that had copper or gold face plates with black writing on them that were hard to read in a dark room or club. As I said the knob markings on this amp really stand out. Another feature I really liked about this amp was how well ventilated it was. On other amps I have owned the top of the amp cabinet would get so hot that you would worry about what the heat was doing to the tubes. You can touch the top of this amps cabinet after it has been on for several hours and it only feels a little bit warm. Another feature I really liked about this amp head was that it is a standard size that fits on about just any speaker cabinet that is available. It fits perfectly on my Blackstar HT-112 cab. One of the items on this amp I heard criticized was that it did not have control for changing the clean and overdrive channels, only a footswitch. I found it was not a problem because when I wanted to get the foot switch off of the floor to keeps the cables on the floor to a minimum, I just attached a 6 inch cable to the foot switch and put it on top of the amp. The footswitch is easy to operate by hand and does not require very much pressure.

Comments about Soldano Hot Rod 25 25W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is an incredible amp. It's certainly not a toy. I owned a 2002 and 2008 SLO and can tell you that this IS an SLO in a 25w package. It has great, great clean/cleanish to dirty sounds and lead tone on the normal channel alone. The dirty channel goes brutal about 3:00. The EQ is fairly versatile and if I had any kind of complaint whatsoever, it would be that the presence control could have a better sweep, but that's being very picky. It's loud enough for bar gigs with a surprising amount of cleanish headroom, but not pristine cleans. Great low end and punch from a 25w amp. FX loop is quiet and reliable. This amp is worth every penny.

Comments about Soldano Hot Rod 25 25W 2-Channel Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amplifier has been called a mini SLO, and that is probably a good description. the EQ and overall tone is similar to other Soldano amplifiers that I have tried. it has tons of gain on tap and even though it is only 25 lot is capable of being loud enough to play with a loud drummer. The cool thing is, even if you max out the master volume still sounds good. However, after two gigs with it, I still haven't needed to Max out the master volume. the normal channel gets crunchy rather quickly-even had a gain setting of 2, you start to get some crunch. However, you can get a very nice clean if you put the gaiin on about 1.5 and turn the master way up. If you max out the master volume, it will be quite loud and still sounded crisp and clear. I have only needed to increase the master to about 7 to play with a rather loud drummer, and the amp gets quite a bit louder between 7n and 11 on the master volume. While It sounds a lot like in SLO, it seems to have a little more of a small amp feel. It's very punchy and it gets feedback a little easier at lower volumes, but not excessively so I found it a lot of fun to play live in a small setting and be able to get feedback when I I want to. While Soldano amps are known for their high Gain tone, I love the clean sounds I can get from this amp. However I wouldn't get this amp to play clean all the time
