OVERVIEW

Brilliant features, stunning design - great thing just got better.

Musicians were astonished when T-Rex Effects released the original SpinDoctor pedal, a tube-driven preamp stomp box with 4 programmable channels, a full set of tone controls, motorized knobs and gorgeous vintage tone. Now, there’s the T-Rex SpinDoctor2 pedal, which offers all the amazing features of the original, but has revamped guts that deliver a wider spectrum of clean and dirty sounds and an even more rich and vibrant tone.

Broaden and deepen your amp with 4 custom channels of analogue overdrive – each with its own settings for gain, bass, mid, treble, presence and output level. A “lead” button takes you over the edge. Bypass your SpinDoctor2 from any channel for a clean sound straight from your amp.

Use the SpinDoctor2 as a tube preamp, just plug it directly into a power amp via the output jack. In the studio, use the speaker-simulation output to plug into a studio mixer or AD converter connected to your computer. Special level and frequency knobs let you set the volume and define the character of your virtual cabinet.

SpinDoctor2 is a masterpiece of sonic art and a triumph of design – packing a stunning array of features into a set of controls so intuitive and easy to use, you’ll have to try to believe it.

4 channels of T-Rex tone that you can set gain, tone and output exactly how you want. Switching between channels and making adjustments on the fly is simple, fast and intuitive.

Tone controls let you tune your tone (bass, mid, treble and presence) for each individual channel. When you switch channels, all your settings change too, so you always have perfect depth, sustain and edge no matter how much gain you apply.

Motorized knobs move when you switch channels, like faders on a state-of-the-art studio mixing board. They’re way cool, but they also provide mission-critical visual cues that let you monitor your settings at a glance.

Get the entire spectrum of analogue gain in a single knob. Turn it down low for a warm clean sound. Turn it up for serious gain. For even more gain, hit the boost button and blast off into the stratosphere of world-class overdrive.

Comments about T-Rex Engineering SpinDoctor 2 Overdrive Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal:

Okay, I bought this pedal because of the motorized knobs and it was on sale. I thought it was cool and could find some tones that I could use. It is now my primary sound and is always on. The tone that you get by running through a real tube is incredible. I have had other typical O.D. pedals and distortion pedals. I use a large pedal board and route all of my effect before the amp. I tried using the effects loop for a while to get tone from the dirty channel of my hot rod deluxe. Now with this pedal I get amazing tube tone without having to run my time based effects through the loop. Thanks Musician's Friend for making this affordable. And thanks to Trex for making super sweet gear!!

Comments about T-Rex Engineering SpinDoctor 2 Overdrive Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've tried, purchased, sold, traded, etc. too many overdrives over the past 20 yrs. of 'semi-pro' playing worship music in a church venue (practice once a week, gig once a week, for 15 years running - can't beat that blessing)!

I've tried digital, tube emulation solid state, even other tube pedals - this is unsurpassed. NOTE: read the brief manual about the tiny button on the bottom side of the pedal - it might solve your problems of 'thin sound' or 'noise.'

Simple to use... plug it in... push 'channel' button... adjust knobs to desired tone/gain/volume... PUSH AGAIN the same 'channel' button AND HOLD UNTIL IT BLINKS... preset saved... repeat with others.

Only played it in front of a '67 Blackface Vibro Champ, AC15TV handwired Vox, and a MF SDOTD Bad Cat Cougar 5. Incredible touch sensitivity, grit, growl, and everything else but chunk (I prefer vintage tones).
      AMAZING....

Strats chime, Teles cluck, and LPs growl.... SO MUCH FUN!

I haven't tried it for recording - but can't wait to do so!
I haven't put it into my pedalboard to take the place of my Blackstar HD Dual Overdrive, but can't wait to do so!
I haven't tried it through our church Bose 'stick' set-up, but can't wait to do so!

This current price - sale - makes it do-able... It's an 'heirloom' pedal. Yes, it's big and heavy. No worries... You will not regret grabbing this while it's still available.

Excellent as a Preamp - Not So Great As An Overdrive Pedal

Comments about T-Rex Engineering SpinDoctor 2 Overdrive Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have tried this pedal as an overdrive for my Blues Deluxe, and it simply doesn't have enough bass to be acceptable. It makes my tone sound trebly and weak. As an overdrive, It just can't compete with my Boss Blues Driver, Plimsoul, or even the lightweight drive channel on my Blues Deluxe. But that's OK, because I really bought it as a preamp for silent practice.

I try to get three hours practice in per night while watching sports with my family. To do that, I need a silent setup. So I use my well equipped pedalboard into the Spindoctor, and then into a mixer that I plug headphones into. The results are spectacular. The Spindoctor acts like an amp with a clean and three drive channels. The tone is great in this application with plenty of bass to drive my studio headphones. The clean and drive channels that I set up with the Spindoctor layer nicely with my overdrive and distortion pedals to give me almost endless levels of overdrive. It's such a nice setup, that I actually prefer it to playing at volume with my Blues Deluxe amp. While I could use my Mustang III or Zoom G5 digital effects amps and pedals, the nice thing about using the Spindoctor as a preamp is that I get to use my pedalboard. It helps me get the pedals set up correctly for gigs, and helps me practice using them during the songs that I play. But the big reason I prefer this silent setup is the tone. The Spindoctor provides tube tone enhanced with my high quality pedals. It's pure headphone bliss...

Comments about T-Rex Engineering SpinDoctor 2 Overdrive Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal:

First, the Good: I wish all pedals were this easy to program! No hidden menus, and the mechanized pots make for an interesting and highly usable interface. Also, this thing is built like a tank. If you treat it with respect, it should last for a long time. This is also an innovative design that happens to look cool.
The Bad: I was hoping that the Bass control would ADD bass. My expectation was that the 12 o'clock position would be "flat" and that 5 o'clock would give a boost. WRONG. 5 o'clock is "flat". The range of the tone controls is just not wide enough for my taste. Also, I feel like this thing actually takes away from the sound and feel of my guitars. My hope was to run this into a Roland GA-112 as a pre-booster/EQ. A/B'ing the Spin Doctor's distortion vs. the Roland, I like the Roland WAY better. To my ears, the OD/dist on the SD2 just sounds mushy and flatulent.
You may want to try this though to see if it compliments your rig. The design and build quality justify giving it a try...but I'm returning mine.

Real tube tone makes all the difference

Comments about T-Rex Engineering SpinDoctor 2 Overdrive Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this at its new, lower price. For practice, I had been using a modeler which I liked, but I always knew that it sounded a bit "plasticky." Wow! The Spindoctor 2 sounds like my real tube amp, which makes sense since it IS a real tube amp. No modeler sounds close.

Here's my new setup: A/B pedal going to a TC Nova and then the Spindoctor 2 on one side and going to a Zoom G3 modeler on the other side. The Spindoctor 2 and the Zoom go into a mixer. Now, I can use my Zoom to lay down a loop for practice, and then I can switch in the Nova and the Spindoctor 2 to play over the loop. It works great.

Be aware that the Spindoctor 2 does not switch patches instantaneously. To me, this isn't a problem, because I can get my different tonalities from one patch plus adding or disabling distortion from the Nova. Having said this, the Spindoctor's 4 presets are great. I have one set up for clean tone, another slightly dirty, another on the Zeppelin side of distortion, and the last, with the boost engaged, for a Metallica-type tone. Add a dirt pedal in front of that, and you can get really screaming lead tones.
