OVERVIEW

Four Flashback delays combine into a comprehensive, TonePrint-ready mega delay with 15 different delay types and a looper.

The Flashback X4 Delay & Looper combines four Flashback delays plus a 40-second looper with 'undo' function into one amazing pedal that takes delay to a place it has never been. TC Electronic made sure the Flashback X4 delivers the legendary TC quality at every turn. From the awesome digital 2290 sounds to beautiful analog tape echoes and more exotic vibes of a reverse delay, it contains virtually every delay sound under the sun - past, present and future. It's even equipped with four TonePrint slots that can be loaded via smartphone or USB port.

This cornucopia of delays also allows players to switch between three customs presets that can be as different and varied as they need them to be. The tap tempo allows you to easily set delay times, sync up with a drummer, or match delays to your guitar rhythms or solo ideas without taking your hands of the guitar or bending over the pedal. Simply tap the tempo with your foot and get on with things! It also allows for MIDI clock sync - perfecting delay times to your exact wishes. You can change presets and control X4 externally, for example if you wanna have it in a rack or safely in your backline.

In Flashback X4, the delay engine is completely separate from the one handling looping so there is total dedication to the sound you want to get and the cool ability to add delay to your loops. Flashback X4's total dedication to delay shines brightly in the expression pedal input. Many guitarists dream to have direct control over delay parameters and Flashback X4 gives you exactly that. But it's just not one parameter you can control, you can choose to control either the delay time, the feedback or the delay level of your sounds, giving you unprecedented control. Whatever your set-up or situation, Flashback X4 can adapt and guarantee optimal signal integrity - via small dip switches, Flashback X4 can be set to either True Bypass or Buffered Bypass.

This is an excellent delay pedal. It offers a very wide range of delay sounds, all of which sound very good. Its easy to use and when used in conjunction with the toneprint editor is one of the most versatile pedals of this form factor. It is however very large, so you need to have pedalboard room that you want to fill with a serious delay pedal. The looper works very well. The four button control is very nice and it provides a pretty solid 40 seconds of recording. One complaint I have heard of the pedal is a bug in which it loses preses upon power cycling. This has been fixed in firmware. The only other real complaint I have heard is of build quality specifically with respect to the switches. I have not experienced any trouble. The chassis feels very solid and the knobs and switches feel good. The switches have a very light click, which IMO is ideal for this application. I have only had the pedal for three weeks or so, and have not experienced any issues.

This is a GREAT sounding unit and is extremely transparent. However, I spent a few hours programming and saving 3 presets in it one night. The next night I took it on a gig, only to find out that for some reason, my presets were gone and it was set back to the factory presets. I did some research on some of the guitar forums and discovered this is a known issue. Long story short...I returned it.

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

I had the FlashBack and wanted the ability to set and access multiple delay sounds within a given set. This tool allows you to store 3 presets and 4 TonePrints at one time. Sound quality is awesome, but interface is counter intuitive, manual sucks, especially when it comes to using an expression pedal to set and control presets. You are either using delay presets in one mode via the three present buttons or you are in looper mode using the delay settings like you did in the std FlashBack model. I still havent figured out in Delay mode how to adjust the settings for real time use - yes you can save them easily (press and hold down a preset button and the unit flashes green) but just using them ala carte is not straightforward. They also dont tell you what 25K linear model expresion pedal will work, and most expression pedal mfgrs dont label their pedals that way and the genuises at GuitarCenter and MF dont have a clue (sold me two wrong expression pedals before I figured it out). And there is no documentation on how to use this with a midi pedal.

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

First of all the unit has a nice sound and is very versatile. But I have returned my unit. Reason is the unit did save my presets after powering the unit off. I contacted TC Electronics and they mentioned the unit must be defective. Also the unit is way to big for most pedal boards. Its larger than three single pedals. Another huge disapointment was the looper. I didnt intend to use the looper much but when I did I noticed some issues. So I just played a short blues 1,2,3 rif and saved it and played it back and played lead to it. There is a short delay after each playback that makes it sound terrible - almost unusable. Thats my take on the unit. I had read great reviews on it and I know a lot of musicians use this unit. But my take is its not worth it at this price.

    Looper is useless with MIDI

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

This pedal sounds great, but I cannot understand why the looper is not MIDI synced. Perhaps that was price prohibitive, but I doubt it. The delay effect itself IS synced.

Without MIDI sync, the looper will quickly fall out of sync, and is essentially useless when the MIDI is engaged. It seemed like such a no-brainer to me I could not believe T.C. had not synced it, and the manual is not obvious about it.

      ALAS! I quickly returned it.

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

I purchased this product last December and have nothing but problems with it. The tone print has never worked even after returning the product and receiving it back from the manufacture. The unit will only save in 3 slots even though its supposed to have up to 12 saved settings under the toneprinr knobs. It doesn't. Customer service gave me the run around for weeks before I could even ship it and when receiving it back was still broken. I would avoid this product like the plague if I was you. If you want to take a chance, then hope it works with no problems or you will have purchased an expensive paper weight.

I wanted multiple delay presets in one box I could easily select. This one sounds great with alot of easily tweakable knobs. 1st day the 1st footswitch broke. I was not even using my foot but hand to press it. Returned it and within 2 weeks a second switch started glitching. Exhanged it. Now the ac/adapter box plug is wiggling and I need to open the box up and secure it.
Overall IMO the delay sounds great but its cheaply made and HUGE. I am willing to sacrifice board space, think it sounds great but like others have had it lose presets. I would not consider it built well enough or dependable to gig with. When/if it breaks I will go back to using 2 Boss sized delays.

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

This is a great delay by TC and I give it 10 out of 10! I mainly play guitar for worship music and have had a Flashback since the first generation. I always loved the flashback but it was always missing one thing for me, TAP TEMPO. This new X4 Flashback has everything a worship guitar player could ask for. Yes, it's big and takes up quite a bit of space but delay is an important factor which I'm willing to give more space for great quality.

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

This is a fantastic pedal to compare to the Line 6 DL-4. I've owned a dl4 for a few years and love it, it is a great pedal too. It has been having issues and I upgraded to the TC Flashback x4, which has been great. This review mostly regards the comparison to the dl4.

            DL-4 VS FLASHBACK X4

The dl4 is a great pedal for live modulation. Tweek and Tweez are strange but great knobs, albeit confusing. The delays are good. The looper is a great quick phrase, on the fly type of looper with 15 seconds. The reverse, half speed, and double speed are what make the dl4 a unique pedal and why it's become so popular. This is the only feature that the Flashback X4 doesn't do. However, it has many more aspects that I believe make it awesome.

The delay tones are more vibrant, lush, and rich. The onboard selections have more variety with TC's delay history. 4 Tone Print selections really surprised me, I thought that the feature seemed innovative but doubted how much I would want an artist signature tone. In using it I am incredibly impressed with the different delays I've tried. The Omar Rodriguez Lopez and John Petrucci ones are awesome. You can also make your own tone print so the delay variety is limitless. Beaming it in with my phone was strange and awesome. I want to record the noise it makes when beaming, or loop it maybe. It might not when trying to accept a beam but another looper after could. The possibilities are infinite, and so are looper pedals these days.

It is nice to have multiple loopers depending on their different capabilities and limitations, but if you are choosing between the dl4 and the flashback x4 it can be hard because they are quite similar. If you know how to use a dl4 you will have no problem with the flashback x4. A big factor to me is the design, and the flashback makes the dl4 look like a clunker. The dl4 has a lot of excess design and a larger body. They are roughly the same dimensions but the flashback is sleek and flat. The knobs and switches

Comments about TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay & Looper:

The flashback x4 is like having the original flashback three times over. You get three presets plus a tap tempo switch. There are sixteen settings, including 4 toneprints, all of which are very useful and sound AMAZING! I prefer the 2290 setting with modulation for most of my church stuff. It sounds pristine. The analog and tube are both extremely useful as well.

In addition to being the best delay processor I've ever owned, it also has a 40 second looper. While I'll probably never use this in a live setting, it is great for practicing lead lines over chords on the fly.

All in all this is one super pedal. It is totally worth the cash and you will get so much out of it IMHO. I've been playing guitar for about 25yrs now and don't usually write such rave reviews, but this pedal is just that good.
