Comments about TC Electronic G-Force Artist Expansion Card:
The card sounds are usable, quirky, funky and inspirational at times. I like the Vai presets...Anything based on harmonizers is nice. Some excellent reverberated textures for clean and etherial sounds. One could really go crazy with all the options...Wish they categorized them better. Perhaps TC could take a lesson from NI in setting up catergories. I find the technolgy and archaic costly answer to an archaic technology that is old school awesome! A modern version of G-Force will be in order hopefully soon...
I think this card is the indirect TC Electonic's way of keeping an somewhat archaic technology alive! I don't blame them though, the G-Force is a stellar unit...The proof is in the sound algos and I don't think anything out there can match this sound. It might be a bit outdated, 80ish and so on, but the sound nuances and textures are undefeated in my opinion. I still love my G-Force and will continue to hold on to it for many reasons besides nostalgia, but mainly because of the glorious sound it produces...There are a number of eclectic artists out there that made presets for G-Force and Steve Vai is one of them that is worth mentioning. There are many banks of textures on the card. Two large banks of 255 presets! That's alot of sound to go through and tweak to your heart desires and they are different from the first release in ROM. The presets are very usable with some minor tweeking! I own all the TC Electonic units and the G-Force cannot be dethroned by the G-Major, period! Many will try to use the analogy that it does so because its modern and has Midi sysex parameters that are controlled through Vizor...Nonsense...This unit is a monster and I cannot wait until they come up with a G-Force engine monster which holds a candle to AxeFx 2.0. Once they do, they will reclaim the top of the heap throne in my opinion, so cmmon TC, the wait is long overdue...Throw some IR Cab Impulse loaders in there for icing on the cake with a new and improved G-Force engine...We're waiting anxiously!
The card is nice, but what is an ancient PCMCIA card supposed to be like quality wise? It seems like you coud drop it a bit and perhaps it would not shatter, but I have not tested that premisse...I'm a bit fascinated that this card is still being made! Is the PCMCIA bus still in use? TC must have a heck of a time keeping these flowing...I wonder sometimes if they wished they put a USB port on the G-Forces! The card is a nice backup/update option to have as a last resort...There are no other options with this unit!
It has value because it bring new sounds to an already ancient machine! Other than that, I have not seen anything that sounds better...Maybe the upscale Axe Fx's or Eventides? I hope they have a G-Force with IR Cabinet Responses for a future version. That would be very cool and blow the competition out of the water...Something I'd love to see!
